Sometime after 1982 which ran to ca. 5,100,000. Don't have any reference for later dates.

The "Ranger" was Winchesters low price, value line, with hardwood stock, other manufacturing shortcuts to make a plain, yet serviceable rifle to compete against Marlin and others.

Rangers are still good hunting arms, I use one whenever I foresee rough use. Here's a link to an earlier discussion, with pics of my Ranger and it's older brother, a 1949 vintage Model 94:

The Ranger designation lets us know a couple of things about the gun, even though we haven't seen it.

Typically, "Rangers" will have a birch stock on them instead of walnut, they also sometimes have a bit of barrel extending just beyond the magazine tube- about 1"-2" or so, and the front sight is just a dovetailed blade into the barrel with no bead instead of the ramp style found on "standard" model 94's.
All these features cut the price a few dollars and made them a better deal.

Default 94 AE's

I've got two 94 AE's and really like them.

This one is .30-30 and has a 24" barrel...shoots 1" groups at 100yds with Remington Core Lokt 170 grain ammo.

This one is a .44 Magnum Wrangler...16" barrel, saddle ring and large loop from the factory.
