Default COLLECTING PD GUNS

Not sure where I should start this, so here will be the spot until it gets moved....

Has anyone undertaken collecting STATE POLICE marked guns? Pistols, revolvers, shotguns? I wonder how difficult it would be to get a marked weapon from each of our 50 states? Do all the states mark the issue weapons for their respective police forces? Not talking cities here, STATE POLICE. I think it would be neat, but is it doable?

I have an 870 and a Beretta 92 that are marked “WSP” (Wyoming State Patrol) and a badge number, but I would think it would be VERY difficult to collect one from every State.

Default FOUND THIS...

Found this list, looks like a collection of State Police guns would be quite a bit of Tupperware. Wonder if they are all marked?

Alabama Glock 22
Alaska Glock 22
Arizona Sig P229 .40
Arkansas Glock 22
California S&W 4006TSW
Colorado S&W M&P .40
Connecticut Sig P226 .40
Delaware Sig P229 .357Sig
Florida Beretta 96D
Georgia Glock 37
Hawaii S&W 5906
Idaho Glock 22
Illinois Glock 22
Indiana Glock 22
Iowa S&W 4046
Kansas Glock 21
Kentucky Glock 34
Lousiana Sig P229 .40
Maine HK USP .45
Maryland Beretta Px4 .40
Massachusetts Sig P226 .40
Michigan Sig P226 .40
Minnesota Glock 22
Mississippi Glock 22
Missouri Glock 22
Montana Sig P229 .357Sig
Nebraska Glock 22
New Hampshire S&W M&P .45
Nevada Sig P229R .40

New York Glock 37
North Carolina SIG P226 .40
North Dakota S&W 4506

Vermont Sig P229 .40
Virginia Sig P229R .357
Washington Beretta 92F
West Virginia S&W 4566TSW
Wisconsin Ruger P89
Wyoming Glock 22

Not sure of accuracy, this list may be dated. I don't think there is a State Police in Hawaii.

I need to expand the question to ask: How hard would it be to collect A PD marked gun from each state police or highway patrol, regardless of vintage? Gotta be a lot of surplus stuff floating around out there. I read Maryland replaced Beretta 92's with CX4 Storm, I know PA replaced Beretta 96's with the new .45GAP Glock. Before that PA had S&W 66's. The stuff has to be out there.

None of the Glock 22s with the IL State Police are marked. They look like any other Glock 22.
The last duty guns that were marked were the 39-nothing. Might have been some 39-2 that were marked but I don't recall ever seeing any so marked. The 39-nothing will be stamped on the dust cover "ILL.S.P." followed by a number. The number is an inventory number and does not have any bearing as to which Trooper carried it. The state of IL at the time required a unique inventory number on every piece of equipment. The serial number would not suffice so the guns were stamped with inventory numbers.
Following the 39-2 the ISP issued the 439, 459, 469, 5904, 6904, Glock 22, and Glock 23. There were also some Walther PPK stainless issued to senior command. None of those were marked with any ISP identification and they all look like any other gun of those models.
You might find a shotgun stamped with IL State Police or some variation of the spelling. Shotguns would be Winchester Mod 97, Mod 12, Ithaca 37. They will be stamped in the butt stock fairly deep. It will look like it was branded on with a hot iron. I don't ever recall seeing any S&W 3000s with the markings but there could be some. I can't recall now if my issued 870 had the ISP markings or not. I removed the stock right after it was issued to me and carried it my entire career with a folding stock. When I retired the range removed the folding stock and returned it to me but I never saw the issued stock after I swapped out for the folder.
S&W made a limited run of 5904 which were ISP commemorative guns. They were stamped with the ISP seal and some gold inlay. Weren't too many sold. They were individual purchase, not dept purchase, and were meant for display. The ISP never purchased nor issued any of the commemorative guns.

SC State Troopers carried S&W Model 65's for a number of years, then adopted the Glock 22, then in the past year or so adopted the Glock 37 in .45GAP. It would be relatively easy to pick up a Model 65 or Glock 22 with the SC markings. The 65's had a rollmark on many, either SCHP or SCHD I believe. The Glock 22's were in a special serial number range, something like SC***, or something similar, so they are easily identifiable. I have seen both of these for sale often in SC, since the state traded them in towards new weapons. They also traded off a bunch of Remington 870's a couple years ago. Some were almost new, others were well worn. I had one like new roll marked SCHP. These are also common in SC.

A lot of states, especially in the Northeast, probably destroy their old firearms rather than release them for sale to the public. Their politicians are afraid that their friends in the liberal media would like nothing better than a juicy headline saying "Former state police pistol used in gang slaying". Pity.

You are correct about police agencies in the Northeast tend to destroy their old pistols rather than release them to the public. I had a Forest Ranger I met while camping in the Adirondacks last year tell me that. New York State is one of those states. He was carrying a Sig 226 in .40 caliber and was extremely happy with it. Conservation Officers on the other hand were issued Glocks. Not sure why they do it that way, but this is New York and they do a lot of strange things when it comes to firearms. So it might be difficult trying to secure a New York State Police trade in.

Years ago the NJSP carried H&K P7s. I always thought that was a pretty cool service gun.

Missouri just recently, with the most recent issue of Glocks, quit marking them. I was lucky enough to buy a good friend's issued Glock with MO. State Police markings because there will be no more issued. As an aside, yesterday I bought an Il. State Police marked Winchester Model 12 riot gun.

Default Agency Markings on L.E. Issued Firearms

Over the years I have seen a number of weapons in service and for sale that had departmental markings. Whether it be a roll mark with the agency letters or something more elaborate like the entire agency name spelled out or better yet a patch, symbol or badge etched or engraved. There are guns out there for sale. Sometimes they will command a premium and often it depends on the rarity of the weapon (number made and/or issued) as well as its condition.

One thing is for sure… whenever the weapon is retired from service the agency has a dilemma on its hands. Often times an agency will allow its officers to purchase their retired service weapons and sometimes even additional surplus guns. For those that aren't marked it's not that big of a deal. For those that are marked where the seal or lettering cannot be easily obliterated through bead blasting or refinishing it becomes a problem if and more importantly when the weapon is sold or traded outside of the law enforcement community. Even the old retired guy that bought his service revolver or pistol will one day pass away and his next of kin may not care for guns or worse yet have it stolen from their car or home. At that point the firearm that was once marked is now in the general public (more specifically with a criminal who either stole it or bought it or traded for it illegally) where the potential for someone BAD to come into ownership or the weapon used during the commission of a crime.

Having a weapon marked with agency markings stolen and then used in a crime is inevitable. Officers homes are broken into, sometimes targeted because of the belief that cops have at least one gun and maybe more. Or when they were secured in a vehicle that was broken into. Stuff happens. You know the media will blow it up when the PD marked weapon is used by a bad guy and then they'll want to know how the bad guy got the gun and so on.

The Smith or Glock that is more or less just like the one you buy at the local dealer with maybe the addition of the Night Sights is very generic but it won't come back to haunt you. Now, wasn't I going to get my retired 4046 engraved with my agency's badge on the slide?

To anyone who wants to undertake the 50 State Collection project, GOOD LUCK. You may succeed but it will be very difficult to do since most agencies do not mark their weapons with agency names, badges or seals.

James, you are a tough audience...there are some nice S&W's on that list. Maybe not collectible, but certainly dependable, reliable and worthy of carry consideration.

All the comments are great.

I suspect one would have a better chance at getting guns from all 50 states if they included revolvers as well as semi-autos. I think they marked revolvers more often in the past than they do semi-autos today. I have state police marked revolvers from 3 states without intentially looking for them.

Can verify that Louisiana State Police recently sold a lot of Sig 220's along with some other Sig models.

None that I've seen are marked by the department. There are still some available to the public through a local retailer.

FWIW, the Kentucky State Police issue the Glock 35 .40, not the Glock 34 9mm.

james56, just out of curiosity, what would your choice be?

Talking

I've been collecting police-marked guns for years, I'm fortunate to be close to a major police supplier that gets in a LOT of trade-ins. I've never verified it, but since the vast majority are Smiths I'm thinking that extra rollmarks were a factory option on police contracts.

It's a dying practice unfortunately.

I have guns that were personally marked with officer's names and agency badge, but that's getting rarer. Nowadays they are not marked at all or have a control number of some sort. For example, my latest purchase is a 4043 from the TABC, the dust cover has the number "14537" rollmarked in it. (why they just do not use the original serial# is beyond me) No mention of agency name though.

My prize is a 4506 marked with a badge, officer #, and "Tulsa PD". I tell friends they went with the 4506 just to have the room on the slide. For that matter, other agencies used to mark guns as well. I have a Mdl 66 marked "Austin Parks and Recreation Dept" on a metal plate glued inside the the grip. (dog catcher I guess)

Don't pass up the long guns too, I have an 870 riot gun marked in no less than 5 places with "Brazoria County Sheriff's Dept #33".

It gets addicting.

City of Honululu (sic) used to function as a de facto state police agency in Hawaii years ago.
Hawaii has a state sheriff's office. The Hawaii Sheriff serves as the state police there.

Many years ago IL had a law that required all pieces of state equipment valued over $100 to be marked with a unique inventory number. Nothing in law mentioned serial numbers. So everything over $100 value either had an inventory number engraved, stamped, or a metallic label. That meant even squad cars. Didn't matter that cars had VINs that would tell a person a lot about the car, still had to have a unique inventory number. Without the inventory number it was a write up by the state auditors. Since serial numbers varied in the number of digits that didn't fit in the state tracking system. Eventually someone figured out the silliness of the law so an exclusion was passed permitting serial numbers instead of inventory numbers if and only if the serial number was actually unique.

That would be an undertaking for more than one generation most likely.

Agency Issue (Very Long) - Real Police: Law Enforcement,Police Officer,Criminal Justice,Background Checks website...

This isn't the tip of the iceberg.

Doesn't even mention the GA State Patrol 4006TSW. Have one unissued and marked as such. It would be quite an undertaking for the entire forum to come up with a collection including all the LEO issued firearms. Have a 15-3 has Orange Cty. engraved on the sideplate. These additions would keep popping up for years.

Ohio is accurate to date. OSHP still carry the Sig P226 40 caliber.

Friend of mine had a brother who had an Rem 870 with "NYS Police" on the barrel. Told me he stole the gun 30 years ago from a trooper's car while the trooper was sleeping! I did not approve, but I have seen cops in one horse towns sleeping while manning a speedtrap.

I don't know about all the states, nor do I know how the Kentucky State Police ( KSP ) are currently marking their issue guns, but I know that at least some of thier older issue guns were marked KSP. I bought a Smith and Wesson .45 auto ( don't remember model number ) from a sale that they had after they switched to a new gun. They sold all the ones in the armory they had been unissued and they were all marked with the KY state seal and KSP.

I'd think that a lot of states used to mark their older guns, getting one from every state would be quite a collection.

Your are correct there is not state police in Hawaii at least like most other states have. There is the Hawaii Sheriff's which are for the entire state. They are pretty limited though to state properties (Roal Palace), courts, and the airports. They do some of the traffic enforcement on certain state property highway area's. Most of the jurisdictional is done on an island to island basis. The Police departments are usually examples: Hawaii County PD, Maui County PD, Kaui County PD, or Honolulu Police Department (City & County). As for a state gun would have to be the Hawaii Sheriffs which I believe carry the Smith & Wesson 5906 9mm on loan from Honolulu Police Department however I cannot 100% confirm that information. They still carry them and upon the end of the firearms service life are returned and destroyed. Officers cannot purchase their issued firearms. They are not stamped with any identification markings other than a factory serial number to my knowledge. Officers can purchase off duty carry weapons from an approved listing at their own expense however.

Speedgunner,

PA State Police did not issue the S&W Mod 66. They were Ruger Security Six revolvers (no markings) which were replaced with the Beretta Model 96D which had an NP3 finish and a PSP patch engraved on the frame. They were replaced with the Beretta Brigadier 96D with a patch laser etched on the frame. The current issued pistol is the Glock 37 with no markings.

17+ years ago I saw a Nevada State Police marked revolver (.357 mag, stainless or nickle plated,& wood grips) that had been picked up at a swap meet (Rutledge Mo.). I don't remember the make of it but do remember the guy showing it off at a friends folks place. Rutledge used have a colorful reputation, so nobody really looked all that close. Probobly the only reason I remember it. I think a collection like you are talking about would be great.

I would include revolvers, rifles, shotguns, semi-autos as long as it was marked with the state of origin. I posted this in the semi-auto forum because I figured the majority of the guns on the market would be semi-autos. Of course, I would include even the older Broderick Crawford vintage highway patrol weapons as my guess would be a lot of states don't mark their stuff anymore. Limiting it to the 50 states would necessitate collecting 50 guns, if you included cities, counties, local jurisdictions, etc. it would be cost prohibitive. As it is, just figure 50 states X $300 per gun (conservatively) and you are talking about a $15,000 undertaking to say the least. I might need to rethink this!!

Thanks for all the comments.

P.S. I am looking for a PA State Police marked Beretta 96D with the Robar NP3 finish. If anyone knows of one or has one they would like to part with I would appreciate a heads up.

I have collected most of the states, both state police, sheriffs dept, and local PD's. It is a daunting task but the history, and finding them is half the fun.

SPEEDGUNNER: As an update to your list Mi Sig 226R DAK 40 SW. Also I believe you are correct in regards to SW 66 never being issued to Pa State police but I believe they were issued SW 19 in the 70's. I also have a 75 anniversary commemorative .

The list you have Speedgunner i have seen before. Its out dated and and not accurate. It says the Kentucky State Police carry a Glock 34 and it’s a Glock 35 they carry. Same gun just a 34 is 9mm and a 35 is .40. All of the KSP side arms and backups have always been marked with an engraved or etched state agency seal and all of the long guns will have at least a property number. I have not seen a long gun with a seal on it. They have been marking them at least since they had 4 inch 66’s. Other then the seal on them they will also have KSP in the serial numbers on their glocks. Most agencies will have the guns marked and a lot now have a seal on it because most states are proud of their State Police, State Patrol, Highway Patrol’s so they mark them. And yes all those guys are Troopers but they are not all the same. That’s another one of my pet peeves is when someone get those mixed up.

spearcrow the KSP never issued the 4566T your talking about. They ordered about 1400 of them after they switched from the 1076, 10mm and they had a lot of problems with the 4566 after they bought them and never issued them. So they went on to buy Glock model 35's and are the only major angecy in the US to be issued that gun for a standard issued side arm.

I would hope New Jersey didn't destroy the H&K P7 squeeze cockers. I think they, the Navajo Tribal Police and the Capitol Police issued that pistol for a while. What a good shooting piece that was. Not easy to work on or so I was told. Very Very expensive, but O' so nice I would love to have one in good shape I would even take a PSP (Euro edition) if it was pristine. the bluing on some H&K P models would get a slightly purple cast to the steel. I was told that it was due to hardness of the steel. Any info would be appreciated. What a shooter, sat low in the hand, solid barrel, just real nice...Any other LE agencies that used them I would like to know about them....

The IL Secretary of State Police Tactical Squad was issued the P7 for a time. I don't know what happen to them when they quit issuing them. There weren't that many guys who had them. When they got rid of a bunch of their guns and went to Glocks I got one of their S&W 649s but the P7 wasn't on the list of what was available. I know the guys on the team weren't all offerred the chance to buy them because a buddy who had one still moans today that he didn't get his.
You're right. They are a great gun.

Ok highway patrol is issued sig P226 in .357 sig but they can use whatever they want if they can qualify with it. I'm kicking myself for not buying the 4506 that was for sale on my state forum that was marked TCSO for Tulsa County sheriffs office and had the badge on the slide

Would have an interest in a "Fixed Sighn N-Frame .357 Magnum made for the New York State Police in 1980."?

Patrick Sweeney in his book, "Gun Digest of Smith & Wesson", states: "And if you have a 520, you have the most durable .357 Magmum Revolver ever made."

Box is marked "NYSP" -- but not the gun. NYSP ordered them, then changed their mind and then adopted a pistol, before they were delivered.

I have one that is unfired, LNIB, with original box (pictured above) and tools and papers.

Smile collecting PD guns

I recently, well, a couple years ago, bought a model 65-4 from a gun dealer that is marked wcsxxxx below the cylinder. I live in Mo. and I don't think that many counties start with W so I'm gonna try to see where it came from. gonna try to attach a couple pics.

The NJSP did in fact destroy their P7M8s. I know, because when we switched to SiGs, I tried to get mine. The guns were never marked. The holster on the other had, had a great NJSP triangle embossed into it. They took the guns, mags, mag pouch and holster and put it in a bag tagged with our badge #. I never saw it again.

My coolest "police gun" is a Remington Model 81 with a detachable 15 round magazine. It was a LA Sheriff's Dept. gun. It is awesome. Like a semiauto BAR!

I have been collecting Tennessee Highway Patrol guns for a few years, both duty guns and commemoratives.
I have a Non Registered Mag(first pic) that letters to Department of Safety in 1941,dont think they all had them but this one went there for sure. The early years arent that well documented..Then Colt Commados were in there somewhere...I have a 15 (pic shown) then they went to 65s then 5906s then Sigmas then the current Glock 31 (pictured).
Commemoratives include the 1979 M19,1989 M25 45LC,1996 Colt 1911

Have a 1975 model 67 marked CHP (California Highway Patrol) and also a 1982 model 13-3 marked Sacto. Sheriff (Sacramento Sheriff; not state police but FYI) Obviously, the stainless is more cosmetically forgiving. (What's with the Pachmayrs? How about some nice worn magnas for us collectors?)

By the way, the 67 cylinder was loosey-goosey regarding rotation on lockup so I got a MIM cylinder lock "thingie" (forget what it's called) (the thing that pops up from inside the frame and locks up the cylinder) from Brownells. Put it in and it works like a champ. Read somewhere gotta' get the MIM part as it's made to max specs.

Default Not State Police issue, but....

Here's an older one of this genre that I recently came across, a Military & Police .38 Special Model of 1905 4th Change, which from the serial number I estimate was made around 1928. Bore excellent, action smooth, lockup acceptably tight, although you can induce it to occasionally be that slight tick away from doing so if you repeatedly cock it very slowly.

It didn't have any stocks on it at all, the correct ones for that era being the no medallion type. However, it was evident from a faint demarcation line on the frame & also from the fact that the rearmost sideplate screw had been replaced with the flathead type, that at some point this revolver had been switched over to magna style stocks. All the stocks I had were way too good for this rough a gun, so an acquaintance brought me some nasty stocks (I wouldn't dignify them by calling them pairs) so I was able to select a left & a right that matched well enough, & are about the appropriate condition. Had to make the bottom locator hole on each just a bit oblong to get them to mount flush, & found a slightly boogered up screw to affix them with.

The large top sideplate screw was missing also, but I found one of those among my parts as well, looks to be from a Victory, but it fits & looks fine. The other absent component is the hammer nose, so it can't go bang just yet, but I've ordered up the parts to remedy that.

So why bother with this beater? Because on the backstrap it's marked "Atlanta Police Dept. No. 2xx" so it has more historical value than is typical, & of course, that service provides an excuse for its very used condition, as well as for the conversion to the later style stocks. I'm told that the previous owner had checked with S&W and was assured that if a letter was ordered, it would show that this revolver was in fact shipped directly to APD.
