Thanks to all for all the great pics of pre-64 Model 70s. Sure nicer than the post 64s. Had a post 64 in .225 Winchester with the push-feed. Another I purchased in 74 had a rather low gloss bluing and a lousy stiff trigger. Ended up with a Rem. 700 and have been pleased overall.

If you can stand just one more - a .264 Westerner with a 26 inch barrel pictured with a lowly model 88 in .308.

I had posted a photo of my 300H&H stockmaking venture previously. There is a bit of a story with it. I was making the stock from a block, not semi-inletted, and our RIT instructor was Joe Balickie, a famous north Carolina stockmaker--he was a stickler for perfection.

I sweated out that inletting process and I was damned if I was going to let him see any "gaposis"!

Anyway, when I inletted the front floorplate hinge, I overdid it and made a gap about 1/64" in front of the hinge.

Unacceptable (even though I had never made a stock before!)

I went home and found a piece of steel and spent the weekend making a slightly oversize front hinge with my drill press and files.

I don't think even a Model 70 expert could tell...!!!

This is possible, but the photos have not been attached here. I am glad someone dug up this old thread. I will post a few pictures in the next few days. Looks like I need to get the camera warmed up. It has been a joy reading these 4 pages. No true originals in the safe, just a few hunting guns that are shooters.

I have a 1937 270 Winchester and two from the late 1950's, one is a 300 H&H and the other is a 338 win mag. The two attached photos are of the old 338 from opening day of Elk season in Wyoming. She hunted hard for many days in the Bighorns. The second is one of the groups I shot in September checking the scope setting before departure. That three shot group measures a little over 0.3" Nosler Ballistic tips. The barnes TTSX will not shoot quite that good but the 300-400 yard groups are scary. I was checking the point of impact at 650 yards the same day and got 3 Barnes TTSX in about 4 1/2 inches. These barrels are cut rifling and this gun is the best shooting factory barrel I have ever owned. These are fantastic hunting rifles.

In 75-76 a neighbor had a pre-64 in '06 he said was to heavy to carry in the woods. Traded him a M-94 30-30. Still have the M-70. Near mint shape. Trouble is after my last shoulder surgery my Orthopedic Surgeon said stay away from anything that has a hefty recoil. Can't bring myself to part with it. Same with my M-12, vent rib with Cutts , my 1938 Auto 5,andthe 870 my sons gave me. Getting old SUX!!

Ummm....errrr. Littlecooner, either you fell down and were lying on your side when you took that first photo, or that mountain is awful steep.

Nice gun.

I acquired my first pre 64', a standard 30.06 several years ago and it is still my No. 1 deer rifle. The original stock had been sanded, varnished and looked like an 8th grade wood shop project.

The stock from that rifle and the stock on the second pre 64 that I acquired were "reconditioned" by a professional. They turned out great but the one on the 30.06 was always a "little thin" around the receiver area.

One night, after returning from dropping a deer off at the processor, i pulled the rifle case out of the back seat and slung the strap of the case over my shoulder. Some IDIOT had forgotten to zip the case completely shut and the rifle slid out and the toe of the stock hit the concrete garage floor shearing off a nice long triangular piece.

I was able to have it repaired, again by a professional, and decided to obtain a Bell & Carlson stock to use while hunting. My rifle smith bedded the action for me and incredibly, the rifle shoots the same 3/4" groups at 100 yards that it did in the wood stock that was not bedded. This rifle has always been extremely accurate and loves Nosler 165 grain partition bullets over an appropriate amount of IMR 4064.

Attached is a photo of the rifle and this year's first deer, taken on Nov. 20.

I've bought sold and upgraded over the years to 15 very nice pre-64 M70's at present. . . I looked for a very long time for a pre-64 M70 in 300 Win Mag and a few months ago I found a nice one. . They're enjoyable to collect and even more enjoyable to shoot and take out hunting. .

In my humble opinion the pre-64 model 70 Winchester 30:06 was,
and is, the greatest rifle ever made. I owned one when I was a young
buck in SW Montana. Bear, Elk, Dear, Antelope, etc. etc. I swear it
never missed. Gave it away in 2000. Yes, I am crazy.
P.S. The Weaver K4 had a lot to do with the amazing accuracy.

I once had 4 of the pre '64 model 70's.
1949 standard in 30-gov't-06
308 featherweight
and two model 70 match rifles. one with the original barrel and one that had been rebarreled with a stainless barrel. The two match rifles shot very small groups and the 1949 was no slouch either. The feather weight would pound my cheek at every shot. And didn't do as well as the other three. All long gone now except for a post '64 match rifle in 30-06. Got that one from a local dealer as it sat on his shelves gave me a good price and home she went. Frank

I like the Model 70, but I only have three. A standard and ordinary one in .30-06, a Featherweight in .257 Roberts, and one in .375 H&H. I have a desire for a .220 Swift, but the right one has not come along. Truth be told, the .257 is plenty for the hunting I do any more, but I'm keeping them all.

Well, I have my father's. '53ish 30-'06. He bought it when he came back from Korea, so he could go elk hunting with his father, where they lived in Idaho. I will never part with it. Also have his father's Winchester 12 12 guage goose gun. The barrel is so long, it spans several counties!

Thirty years ago I was in my LGS, a combination gun shop/ tire store. Noticed a pre 64 Model 70 in the gun rack with a larger than normal barrel. Asked Jack, the manager what it was. He said .375 H&H, then said "Can you imaging someone owning that in Maine"? I asked how much? He said since there wasn't much call for Cape Buffalo rifles in Maine, $250. Almost tore my wallet apart getting the money out. Came with a scope, Lyman 48 peep, loading dies and a box of shells.
Eight months later he called to tell me had just taken in another pre 64 suitable for Africa if I was interested, a 26" barreled .300 H&H. That one wasn't the deal my .375 was. Highway robbery at $275. Yep, still have 'em both and Cape Buffalo haven't been a problem here on the coast of Maine since.

This model 70’s serial number (449XX) puts it in 1942 production on Winchester’s table but I’ve also been told it was possibly 1941. Looks like it’s been re-barreled with a Winchester barrel (30-06 SPFLD.) and the Redfield International sights are probably 1950s or 60s vintage. I’ve wondered why it wasn’t acquired by the government for training or some other use in WWII. I can find no government proofs or ownership marks on it.

I once owned a 1968 M70 in .458. When asked why, I just said it was to stop rampaging elephants out in the garden. We didn't have them, but the fat chick next door was a good approximation. Sold it when I moved.

Is the Roberts a pre-64 FWT?

I have a 50's vintage Model 70 in 300 H&H magnum. It was my Dad's.
I don't have any idea how many elk, moose, deer and antelope he took with that rifle.

I got a Remington 721 in the same caliber when I was 14 and old enough to accompany him on an elk hunt. I got a bull. I also have no idea how many that rifle knocked down over the years.

Both of them are sitting in the gun safe waiting for my Son and Grandson to come get them.

Factory FWT barrel?

Many years ago I had JK Cloward build me a custom M70 from the rifle my dentist gave me as a teenager. Somehow I screwed up a tiny piece of wood by taking the action out of the stock without removing the bolt first.

Cloward repaired it, and I doubt anyone can see it....as the factory rifles look the same in the repair area. But I had him build me an entire new custom rifle and have had this stock sitting around for 40 years.

Fast forward 42 years!! I found another pre-war M70 action, JD Thomas of Yakima, got me a new/old 30.06 barrel and put it back together. To me, it looks like a million bucks. None of the parts have ever been re-blued, and looks old(which I seem to be).............and my son will get it someday. Totally OLD school!!

Default My Pre-64 M-70 Story

I very much enjoyed all these Pre-64 M-70 stories from this very old thread. Thought I would contribute my own. I bought a nice early 50's M-70 in 300 H&H a few years ago from a retired American PH. The old girl had made many trips to Africa. I just had to have this old classic, wearing a period correct B&L Balvar, 3.5-6 I think. Very cool looking with a straight tube and clunky externally adjustable mounts. The rifle would print boring cloverleaf groups with modern ammunition. It was run over by a four-wheeler on my first deer hunt when I carelessly leaned it against a four-wheeler without telling the driver. It got mashed into soybean field mud pretty good. I gained new respect for that ancient scope, scope mount and M-70 when it continued to lob in three shot cloverleafs, exactly in the black, the kind of reliability you would want if chasing critters that could eat you.

Some very nice pics of these collectible vintage rifles. Doubt we will be viewing pics of guns like the Savage Axis in 40 years! Not quite the same. LOL
