Default A pre-'64 Model 70 Winchester thread **New info 3/10/11**

My rifle "holy grail" was for years a pre-'64 Winchester Model 70 in .30-06 caliber. Long known as "The Rifleman's Rifle," the pre-'64 Model 70s featured controlled feeding, reliability, almost hand-made care in manufacture, graceful lines, an excellent adjustable trigger, hand checkering, and legendary accuracy. Finally, in 2006, I found my holy grail in this rifle, made in 1949 in the "golden years" of Model 70 manufacture. I mounted a Nikon scope on it, and it rewarded me with minute-of-angle groups at 100 yards. Here's a pic:

I was really pleased that this 60-year-old rifle still performs, and that it gives me great joy of ownership. I am saddened that the original Winchester plant in New Haven CT is now history, and no longer producing classics. New Model 70s are now being made, but not in their original form, and not in New Haven. A new "commemorative" Model 94 is now being made in Japan. It's just not the same, to me. I guess I just happen to like the good old made-in-America classics.

Anyone else have one or more of the pre-'64 Model 70s? Pictures?

Over the years I have had a number of Pre64 70's, but none at present. I bought my first one in 1966, a prewar 30/06. The gentleman I bought it from thought $95 was a fair price. It was hard deciding between that and a very nice .44 magnum he had at the same price. I later bought several very nice rifles and shotguns from him, always at his prices, and none over $100. Sadly, I let them all slip away.

Later I had a prewar .257, a .270, a .220 Swift--all gone in moments of weakness. I now have Whitaker's book on Model 70's, which appears to be worth more than I paid for any two of the rifles.

Saw a pre-64 Model 70 in 30/06 at a gun show this morning. A few scratches, but ok otherwise. He wanted $950 for it so I walked away. I have his phone # so I may give him a call after a week or so.

He also had one in 220 Swift with a scope for $1600. Ouch!

Great guns but those prices are just tough to swallow.

if the swift was a target, not a varminter , and had a good throat and bbl. and otherwise original, it was worth the price. sold some pre-64 bull guns lately and haven't taken less than $3500 yet. these are scarce variations with 28in hvy bbl. and marksman stocks

Had a Pre-64 Winchester .243 with the heavy bbl (stainless) - not sure if was a varmint model or some other. Using reloads, it would pick off groundhogs at 300 yards with no problem. Used a Leupold 10x scope & it was a deadly combination. Not sure why I ever sold it - nuts, I guess.

My grandfather had a standard rifle in .270 Win. made in 1949. I thought that had to be about the finest rifle in the world when I was a kid, and I think I was right. I have it now along with a 1947 30-06, a first-year .308 Featherweight and a 1955 30-06 Target rifle. I've also owned rifles in .243 Win., .257 Roberts, 300 H&H and 375 H&H, and I wish I had them all back. There are some fine, more modern rifles out there, but nothing, and I mean nothing, compares to the old Model 70

Paladin, that's a great looking rifle. I think I could see my way around using the current scope but the rail just doesn't look right on that classic Winchester.

Thumbs up M70 .30 GOV'T '06(1949Vintage)

I purchased this rifle several years ago and put a Leupold Vari X III 1.5-5 on it with Leupold QRW bases and rings. I prefer a straight stock as it makes it more natural to point. It is a user but is still very nice and original. It is "plainly elegant" to me. This '49 vintage feels as if it has "soul" when I handle it. Definitely a favorite of mine...........Sprefix

After some dark days, indeed, I think you would be pleasantly surprized at the product currently coming out of South Carolina....perhaps not the equal of the old classic, but closer than you might think.

I shot my first deer with a pre 64 Featherweight in 243 with a Leupold 1.5x5 on it. I got a lot after that with it and it's still with me.

No, it wasn't a target model. I would have grabbed it.

Left to right: 1937 .220 Swift, 1947 .257 Roberts, 1953 .30-06, and a early 1980s .375 H&H Magnum.

These 3 pre-64 rifles are very gratifying to shoot from the bench rest and return sub-inch groups with favorite loads. The .30-06 is my very favorite and I've had it the longest. The .257 Roberts works well against our Texas whitetails.

Actually the .375 H&H ain't half bad for fine groups, but a couple of 5-shot groups with it, fired from the bench and I'm ready to go do something else for awhile.

Here's the parent model to the great Model 70, a Model 54. This one is in the carbine configuration and is factory chambered for the .30-30.

Wound up with the uncles m-70 #73--- from 1948. 30-gov-06.Very nice shape and a much better shooter than I am. Had a set of redfield peepsights mounted and the original sights put in the box. Was lucky enough to find the box as well. Sure wish I could have loaned him the money for the supergrade but that just wasn't him. Wander how much the difference was back then ???????

I've had a few over the years but it seems like they got traded or sold for some reason.

I have two pre-64 model 94's that I cherish. Seems like the 64 and 70's are equally collectable and both show the true artistry of Winchester in it's heyday.

Palladin, I gotta agree with this...lose the rail.

Sir, I have my grandpa's old antelope gun, a standard grade .270 Model 70 made in 1951. It's fitted with a Weaver KV scope and will easily put three shots into an inch at 100 yards. Doesn't need fancy ammo to do it, either--just plain ol' factory Remington Core-Lokt.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

When I first started deer hunting (it was pre '64) a rich guy had a Super Grade .270 that I admired. It took 40 years, but I finally got to where I had enough money to buy one for myself.

What a fine shooting rifle - consistent 3/4" groups with reloads. I even have some surplus 4831 to reload it with.

I have two. A hornet that is 1st year, 1937 that was converted to K-hornet, and a 1952 300 H&H.

I have owned numerous pre-64 M/70's over the years since buying my first .30-06 in 1975. I now have two, a pre-war .257 Roberts that I lucked into at a small gun show in Ohio the dealer even had an extra stock for it brand new in the box. The other is my deer rifle, an old .30-06 that I had Randall Redman rebore to .35 Whelen. It wears an early Leupold 2-7X in a Griffin & Howe double lever mount.

Here are some of mine. I have been collecting model 70's since about 1975. Prices have changed considerably during that time.

As usual, I feel like the impoverished orphan. I've only got 2 of them, both prewar. I had a postwar .458, but it wasn't worth the expense and trouble. It went to a new owner with an elephant problem in his yard.

About 15 years ago I was getting ready to pack up at the end of a long gun show when I spotted an early M70 in the booth next to us. I'd been dodging the guy's display next to our walk thru opening all weekend. He had an early .30-06 on display, with a BalVar 8 scope on it. It was the scope of my childhood dreams. Even when I was a teen and had some money, all I could afford was a junk 7/8" 22 scope. The BalVar was just unobtainable for me. So when I pulled the rifle off the rack to examine the scope, I noticed the 276x serial number. Early production is good. Of course mounting the scope required a little wood removal, but I really didn't care. It was THE classic M70 with a scope I'd dreamed about many nights. It didn't hurt that I'd had a good show and had a pocket full of cash. Better still, the price seemed pretty reasonable to me. So it went home with me.

My table pard was shocked at how easily I was duped into buying a gun he had almost no use for. I was thrilled, and it was my money. But he always noted what I bought and why.

A few years later it was Christmas eve. He was traveling from far western KY to the eastern mountains to visit his daughter. He made a stop in Lexington at our favorite gun shop. Then he made the phone call to me.

He told me to leave work and get my tail on the road. They had a gun I needed desperately. I told him holidays weren't observed in my line of work, and it was impossible for me to get there before Saturday. He said it was OK, he'd already put it on layaway for me (its what friends are for.) I told him I already had a nice early prewar M70. He said not this early, and to just shut up and do what I needed to do. Turns out the one he'd discovered on the ratty old used gun rack was M70 #202. As usual, he was right. I needed that gun in the worst way.

At one of the shows, I'd been able to handle #2, along with all the books and documentation for it. The then owner, and Atlanta gun dealer, was asking $33,000 for it. Turns out he eventually sold it for just under $20,000. At that price, I'd have been interested.

Some of us are crazy and seek low serial number guns. In my short and sorry experiences, they seem to shoot just as well as any produced, with a little more care to fit and finish (applies to S&W guns, too.) I don't need brand spankin' new, I want great history.

Does anyone here have access to the story about M70 #1, and how the then owner and gunsmith couldn't find a number because all they could find was 1 stamped on the various parts? As I recall, it was a Texas ranch rifle that had spent its many years in the window of a pickup truck (really, a succession of trucks as the rifle outlived truck after truck.)

Do any of the M/70 afficianados here on the forum know of a gunsmith who restores M/70's? Doug Turnbull is a little out of my price range, so I am looking for other craftsmen who can create appropriate wood and metal finishes.

Ron, I'd have to agree with you with regard to the looks of the combination not being really "period." Perhaps sometime in the future I'll get some period mounts - BUT, the modern combination gives me perfect eye relief, fast mounting and re-mounting with return to zero, and rock-solid mechanics. It's kinda the best of both worlds - old-line craftsmanship with modern optics and mounting systems. Plus, the rifle itself is not changed in any way. Do ya think it would help the looks if if I took a Dremel cutting disk to the front part of the rail, and lopped it off even with the front edge of the receiver?

Hey, what's the big idea? Countering my argument with logic! How rude!!

Trim the rail? Yep, it would help.

Very nice rifles to one and all. My grail rifle is a '63 Mdl 70 in 300 Win Mag, the birth year for the 300. Haven't tracked one down as of yet, however I did find a nice ol' squirrel gun...a '65 70 in 300 with open sights.

Since I was a boy I always loved the 300, don't really need one here in the SE, but then again I don't need most of the guns in my safe.

Anyone have a '63 winny they can show pics of?

Cheers,
Sam

I own a '58 vintage standard M-70 in .30/06. It has had the stock shortened at some point in it's life, and it came to me with a side mounted Williams base and rings, and a Weaver K2.5 scope in excellent shape that another forum member now owns. It also had a nice old Lyman peepsight on it, which I still have. It has very good metal on it, and the stock while modified from original, is actually in quite good condition too.

I had a Williams Gunsight 'smith install a spacer and red buttpad and now it fits me just right, though it doesn't have the classic look anymore. Mine is also extremely accurate, with 5 shot 1" groups at 100 yards not too hard to get with about any decent load.

I need to find the correct front sight hod and the rear sight for it though. have been looking for several years for the hood, and the rear sight I need is one of the later folding leaf type, instead of the long spring/elevator type. If anyone has one of either of these please let me know.

I don't have any pictures of mine right now though.

Shorty4T-

The man that lived next door to where I used to live owned a '63 in .300 Win Mag. I at least got to shoot it several times.

Since then, I have seen at least 2 others, but both were way out of my budget range at the time I found them.

300 win has always been expensive due to being made only 1 year. although they made a lot of them that 1 year, they are highly prized, both as collectors and shooters. finding 70's out of the woodwork these days is almost a thing of the past. anyone know where i could find a 1st year in 300 h&h? for some who just wants a pre-64,then an 30-06 std. or a 308 featherweight would be the most reasonable in cost. for the serial#1, i think there is an article in the roger rule model 70 book about it. the story about it being a pick-up gun is supposed to be true.

my current (only) pre 64 70 is a 30-06 from the late 50s i have a matte vari X 1 3-9 on it. shoots just fine. i also have a recent production super grade in .25-06 thats a nice rifle but the trigger is not that great.

a few pre 64 M70 stories....

a few years ago i saw a prewar 9mm mauser. seller had documentation and everything. i had no need so i didnt even ask for the price

for YEARS there was a .220 swift super grade barreled action in the corner of teh rack in a shop i frequent. apparently it came with the inventory when current owner bought it. nobody would give me a price as every time i asked if it was for sale. then one day it was just gone. i would have gotten a nice piece of wood for it if i could have gotten it at a good price. same shop for about 2 years had a target barrel 30-06 on consignment everybody thought it was too much at 2,500

a featherweight .308 woudl be snapped up if i can ever find one at a good price.

a older gent who frequented shop above had a small M70 collection that was pretty nice. the coolest thing i thought he had was a 7mm mauser carbine ( i know they didnt use the term "carbine" but you know what i mean)

Very nice thread on the "RIFLEMAN"S RIFLE". It's always nice to see them still in action after all these years!

Paladin- Is there a story as to why your '49 rifle has a monte carlo stock?

Dick Burg- The article on M70 #1 is in the June '90 Rifleman (what else?). #2 is mentioned in Rule's book, but not in my first edition ('82), as the gun didn't come to light until '87.

BTW, you'll be interested to know that it was purchased in a hardware store in Durango, CO., around a year and a half after it was made.

Of my M70s, the favorite is a Special Order '54 .308 FWT. my father ordered with a factory installed Lyman 48 and a leather covered pad.

Good M70 shooting!

Minuteman- Thanks, I have had a lot of fun collecting M70's. The first one I purchased was about 1973 form an Army officer stationed at Ft. Harrison in Indianapolis. It was a 300 H&H magnum he had purchased new in 1959 in anticipation of being transferred to Alaska. His transfer never happened. He purchased the rifle at Em-Roe Sporting goods and paid $139 for the rifle and $210 for a 4-10 power Pecar scope. When I went to look at the rifle he told me he had just thrown away the box and paperwork. I thought nothing of it at the time. I gave him $350 for the rifle, scope, 100 rounds of Norma ammunition and a set of reloading dies. He apologized for how high the price was but said it was because of the scope. I am sure that when I got it the rifle had never been fired as the 100 rounds of Norma ammunition was shown on the receipt he gave me. I still have the rifle it is the one in a vertical position on the left side.

A commemorative 94 "made in Japan". That's just not right.

To chime in with Homie; I have a 1952 Standard '06 with a Leupold 2X7 on with a monte carlo stock that I believe was the first year that that stock was available. Swapped a 1st year .243 Featherweight for it. Not smart I suppose, but deliberately done.

The old gentleman I bought my '49 vintage Model 70 from said he had it for decades, and I have no doubt it's the original factory stock. Correct metal buttplate and all. The receiver is factory drilled and tapped for scope mounts, so it sure was intended for scope use. I'm not enough up on proper stocks to know if Monte Carlo stocks were an option or standard equipment in 1949. Maybe someone who has a '49 Winchester catalog, a '49 Stoeger's Bible or a '49 Gun Digest could tell us.

I have a '49 Shooter's Bible, but can't get to it at the moment. However, the Monte Carlo stock was for sure listed in my '53 edition, so it stands to reason that it was also available in '52 when you consider lead time needed to get the Bible printed and out on shelves in early '53. This corresponds with the post Tam 3.

Paladin,

The monte carlo stock was introduced in late '51 and first catalogued in '52. The other change made with the MC stock was to change the leaf spring rear sight to a folding leaf.

Nothing to really worry about, just background information about the rifle.

The serial number range for '49 is 101680 to 131730.

Hope this helps- good shooting.

My 300 H&H that I showed on page two has the monte carlo stock and rear folding sight, and was built in 1952. It is serial # 239536.

Feral,
If I'm reading Rule's book correctly, your H&H was made in January '53. It may have a '52 dated barrel.
Nice rifle- my .300 is a '57.

Good shooting.

I checked my '48 Stoeger's and it does not show the Monte Carlo stock in that year. Also, neither of my '40's-vintage rifles has it. Both have the standard stock with no Monte Carlo or cheekpiece.

Pre-64 Model 70's and pre-64 Model 12's have had my admiration for a quite a spell. It seems to run in cycles; pre-64 M 70's. M12's and early S&W revolvers and maybe the odd Colt.

Currently I'm dealing on a 2nd owner 1955, 220 Swift with a long tube scope. The barrel and throat are like new so he wants plenty for it. $1600. Waiting for more pictures and info.

Roger Rule's book, "The Rifleman's Rifle", is a great source of knowledge on the M70.

My pre-64 M 70's consist of:

- 1940 30 Gov't 06
- 1951 30-06
- 1953 30-06
- 1953 270 Win
- 1952 257 Robts.
- 1952 300 H&H mag
- 1959 338 Win mag
- 1959 375 H&H mag
- 1959 308 Win fwt.
- and their Grand Pappy: 1936 Model 54, 30 Gov't 06

Only have one picture on the H/D, but here it is:

1952, 300 H&H magnum

Homie,

Thanks for the information. My Model 70 has a serial number within the range you indicated. The barrel date indicates manufacture in '49. As to the Monte Carlo stock, I dunno. Either it's a pre-introduction/special order, or someone switched factory stocks. I wasn't aware of the later introduction of the Monte Carlo stocks. I appreciate your information.

John

I had a pre 64 model 70 in .270.. a true classic that I got from an old customer who used to hunt out west and the stories were worth it. He finally sold me the gun and I was kinda upset with the scope mount. It was a side mount that hinged off to the side to use the open sights. The one time I shot it it did fine but the holes in the side of the receiver bothered me.

If I would have known then what I know now about using guns I would have kept that old rifle. Rifles bought right that are used or modified to where ya aren't afraid to use em are worth having!

Its one of the few I wish I had back...

Sadly the herd of user M/70's is rapidly being depleted by the "parts whores", they're parting them out cause the parts have become so valuable. Please when selling let's be careful not to let your M/70 fall into one of these guys hands. Pretty soon there won't be many shooter grade guns, they'll all be pricey safe queens.

I found this thread while looking for trigger adjustment for a pre 64. Sure has been nice looking at the beautiful rifles.

In 1980, I bought a Model 70 (pre 64), standard in 270 with a Weaver KV 2 3/4 to 5. The gun had had a half box of Winchester Western shot in it and I got the other half with the gun. I shot the other half and put in in the safe to be a safe queen. It was, literally, 98% including the Weaver.

A month ago I started shooting it again along with four other safe queens. What a joy this is to shoot. I carefully took off the Weaver, put it back in it's original box (I have the box for the 70 also) and replaced it with a Nikon 4.5X14X40 BDC. Since then I've shot about 150 rounds (I reload with the Lee Loader that came with it).

Thanks again for the great pictures. I'll have to get my daughter to teach me how to post a picture. Forgot to say - serial number 207XXX from 1952.

I have four of these old Md 70 Winchesters. Two are featherweights in 30-06 and I usually hunt every year with them. It still knows how to put deer into the freezer. One is in 375 H&H and I used it for elk when we lived in Wyoming in the early 80's. The last one is the odd ball of the group. It's a Md 70 Westerner in 264 Winchester Mag. I bought it new in about 1961 and have used it for antalope but it"s not been shot in years. Also have 7 Md12's, three Md 42's and four Md 61, 22 pump guns. They all sit in the safe and collect dust. I know, a crime, but I kinda like the modern Remington stuff for it's utility. My son well probably get it all someday. David

Just sold one. Same gun as yours but it was built in "52". I bought more pistols with the proceeds. When I got back from Afg-I no longer wanted to shoot four legged animals. Enjoy.

I've heard these models extolled off and on for years, and now you folks almost have me wanting one. But could someone take a few minutes and explain to this ignorant fellow why they are so special?

Only one, but it was my father's .. a 270 featherwt. He bought it in Germany thru the Rod& Gun club for around $125, IIRC. I did a bad thing(in some purist's opinion) in that I restocked it with a Brown Precision Fiberglass Stock. (But I was smart enough to keep the original) Quite frankly, the original stock bruised you. Ten rounds and you had a heck of a "hicky" on your shoulder, and I am not a small person. The new stock makes it an all day shooter.

Too many memories for me to ever sell it.

As to why they are so coveted, they were made with a lot of machining and had a reputation for accuracy. Controlled round feeding is nice if something big and dangerous is headed your way.

However, Remington 700's far outnumber the other M70's in my safe. No real reason other than they were there in the caliber I wanted at the time I could buy them. Never had any problem with either as far as the operation and accuracy goes.

I too have only one. It was my Dad's. 300 H&H with a Weaver K-4 scope. he got it in the middle '50s.

He got an elk and sometimes a moose almost every year from 1957 to 1979.

He got me a Remington 721 in 300 H&H when I was 13. I took my first elk with it the next fall.

I learned to reload for those rifles with a Lyman 310 tool and dies.
I've still got both rifles and the reloading equipment.

He and I went elk hunting together for the last time in 1979, and he shot a cow with that old rifle. He was 62. He died just this year at 92.

I think I'm gonna keep that old rifle around. I've got a son and and a grand son that need to have that rifle one day.

Back in the good old DCM days of the late 50's and early 60's, our nearby Army Ordnance Depot disposed of a small lot of Model 70 Target guns in 30-06 complete with Redfield Olympic sights for the princely sum of $75! I kept one for years and finally sold it a few years ago.
