Shooting out of vehicles
Back in 60s I was on a engineering crew. At lunch time I had
bought a m-58 and box of shells at a small shop local. We returned to job site, which was in a big river bottom. It was
drizzling rain, boss said we'd wait it out. There were 4 of us in
a jeep Commanchee wagon. In 15 mins. The other 3 guys were
dozing off. I was messing with new gun. There was a quart oil
can about 20ft. from jeep. I couldn't resist, I shot out wing. There
was 3 head shaped dents in jeep roof when rest of crew" woke up".

My brother was asleep at my hunting camp. I let the 44mag go off outside and he never woke up. Go figure. Thank god my door is bear proof.

One day when we were alone at a nice big gunrange, a friend and I did some "drive bys", going about 15 to 20 mph on the dirt road.
Positively hitting the IDPA targets at a mere 20 to 30 yards was harder than we had thought and we practiced that a little bit.

About 30 years ago I was getting ready to start a deer hunt with a couple of guys I worked with and it was about 20 degrees out and still dark. One of the guys decided to load his rifle inside his car because he was cold and he had the door open standing outside loading it on the front seat. The rifle was 94 Winchester and for some reason he decided to load the chamber and as he was lowering the hammer it slipped off of his cold thumb discharging leaving a hole in his seat and passenger door. Luckily his car was parked with nothing but woods on the other side of it so no one was injured but I can still see his silhouette from the muzzle flash. He was pretty much deaf for a couple of hours.

My first time in NM I was down at Walker AFB, Roswell.
At that time jack rabbit shooting was all the rage and new to me.
One day a buddy and I were way out somewhere shooting jacks. I am driving down a dirt track when I see a wobbly jack near the road. The jacks had some kind of disease which affected their balance.
So I stop and ask for his Luger. I had never shot it.
I fired once, missed. The Jack took a couple of steps. Fired again. Missed. My buddy started laughing, the car started rocking.
I looked off into the distance. All I could see was sheep running away.
I had shot into a herd of sheep. Did I leave fast? Oh yes.

A friend of mine was participating in his families annual Thanksgiving Day tradition: The men hunt while the women cook. He is well versed in all the safety protocals and never before violated them..until this day.
When they went in from the field to eat he didn't unload and pack away his gear, figuring to do it after they ate. After dinner (and watching some football) it was dark, so he and his wife drove home with the loaded weapons in the back of his bronco. When they got home his wife went in, and he lowered the tailgate and grabed his duffle bag - containing his .44 Magnum sidearm and his rifle. As he pulled it toward him the muzzle hit the gate and sent a round through his upper thigh. When his wife found him the only thing holding his leg together was his femoral artery and bit of leg muscle!
He survived, but it took two years to go from hospital to wheelchair, then to a walker, then to a cane. Today, he can walk without the cane, but not without the limp that serves to remind him how dangerous even ONE failure to follow safety rules can be.

Which gun fired? If it was the revolver, how was that possible? Unless maybe, it was a Ruger SA made before their re-design about 1973. If so, he shouldn't have had a round in the chamber under the hammer.

I grew up in a different time and different place than most. Living in the country it became a rite of passage shooting jackrabbits or coyote while driving, mainly at night. Of course this was on private ranches and deserted roads. If a coyote dared showing himself the chase was on. The driver seldom shot but the passengers got some shooting. The driver had his hands full driving 50 mph across fields and rough roads in pursuit of the little yodel dogs. Just about every family had a beater car us kids could use. The driver if alone could get a jackrabbit running ahead of his headlights and get some handgun practice. Most of this happened between the ages of 12 and 20. You would think that with age comes a softening of attitudes towards coyotes. However coming out of the hills this year during elk season, we spotted a coyote in an open field. Three of us in a Razor, a Colt Woodsman, and the chase was on. The old dog had too much of a head start on us and got into the brush before we could overtake him. Laughing like teenagers we turned around to discover 2 of our rifles had been thrown out of the atv in our pursuit. Had to backtrack to find them a little scuffed up but still good as new. You would think that at the age of 61 the thrill of the chase would vanish. Pleased to say that is not the case.

In a lifetime of shooting and hunting, I've seen more than a few. Well, here's a couple:
1. Hunting in eastern Wyoming when a blizzard came in. I had my buck and had already taken it to town. I was in an old abandoned ranch house with my wife (hired on as camp cook) and some others. Lots of greenhorns that year. One guy went around knocking the snow off of the canvas tents from the inside (!). Well, one guy (no acquaintance) was sleeping in his camper. Went to put his rifle in the case in the cab and put a 7mm mag through the tranny and Bell housing. We were snowed in for a week and then it all turned to slush. I figure his truck sat there until Spring.
2. I got a smallish buck and was helping guide some of the other hunters as a favor. A friend asked if we could take his son (~12 or 13) out and get him a buck. The kid really didn't want to be there=just wanted to be with his dad. The three of us were in the cab of the truck when a small (VERY small) blacktail buck walked out in front of us. The head guide rolled down his window and had the kid take the shot. The buck stumbled and ran off. I jumped out and there was a decent blood trail. Turned around and the bullet had gone straight through the side mirror. We later took the mirror and mounted it on a walnut plaque with a brass name plate, just like a set of antlers and hung it in our hunting camp.

Just in case you younger guys haven't picked up on it yet-
Shooting from cars is a dumb, stupid and dangerous thing to do.
Don't do it!

Does going on a drug raid, and a feller fires off a burst thru the floorboard in the back seat of my Patrol car count? He din't hit nuthin' but highway.
Me and the Capt. patched the holes in the car with hot road tar the next day.
As mentioned earlier shooting Jack Rabbits at night was the way we made beer money. One kid had a VW with a sun roof. Another bolted a 55 gallon barrel on the front of the car and they took turns bein' the nose gunner.

In the early '60's my late brother was a Navy radioman assigned to an inter-service communications base at Asmara, Eritrea, which then was part of Ethiopia. Baboons abounded around the base and were dangerous--they could throw sizeable rocks with great force and accuracy.
Gerry said that sometimes at night he and his buddies would drive a jeep with the lights off along the runways of an abandoned WWII Italian air base until they spotted baboons. Then the driver would slam on the brakes and hit the headlights, and a couple of squids would stand up and blaze away at them with the .45 sidearms they were ordered to carry if they left their base.
He didn't know if they ever hit any, but said it was a lot of highly frowned-upon fun.

Everything fun is frowned upon. Especially by management, officers, and liberals. That might be part of what makes it fun!

Don't know how true it is but my dad was a ground crewman/chief to the Flying Tigers after they were blackmailed into joining the Air Corps. He told me they used to go shoot flying "squirrels" at night. They'd "borrow" a jeep, put some aviation fuel in it, load up a case of Chinese beer, and go out. He did say, on at least one night, they had
.45s, one or two M-1 Carbines, a Thompson and a Model 98 marked with Chinese Army markings.
He never said whether they got any or just shot a bunch of leaves.

I have a place I can practice as I drive. A skill I think is desirable. Mine is a private road with a dirt hill within 20 yards. As I drive @25mph I shoot at clay birds I have set on the hillside. I try both left and right handed shooting. I either use a Colt Woodsman or a K 22. Needless to say but I don't have to change clay targets very often.

WOW! EXPECTING HATE MAIL ON THIS ONE.
Are we setting a good example here? Dumb and unsafe has no expiration date, if it is bad now, it was bad then IMO. To wax nostalgic, put it off as being fun,& things were "different" then is just rationalization. NO HALO here and have done WAY MORE then my share of stupid things in the past, the day is young and fully expect to make more in the future, MAYBE this thread should have a tittle STUPID THINGS I've DONE, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Have I done many of the same, similar, or worse, OF COURSE. I hate to be the wet blanket at this party, but some of these stories could be used in a JACKASS movie sequel. Hard to pick a clear winner for the MOST dumb & dangerous, with so many to pick from, and I didn't post any of mine. Flame on.

Hangnoose: Good points (No, EXCELLENT points). In all seriousness, some (many? Most?) should not have lived as long as we have.
I am sure we all have paid some cost for our screw-ups (mine is a gimpy leg from not following the correct order while cleaning a 22 auto)' Hopefully, new shooters (and some old shooters, as well) will learn from the mistake we discuss here!

Yes indeed, I hope the younger folks can learn without paying too steep a price.
As I have posted before, I have seen 2 Ruger Blackhawks which badly maimed the shooters.
Both guys were quick drawing with 357 ammo.
Both shooters discharged the Blackhawk down into their leg.
Both shooters had to have that leg amputated at the knee.

For success shooting from a moving car, hold the gun sideways. That's what I heard in the 'hood, anyway.

IT'S A MIRACLE
I survived the 70's alive, not seriously injured, without any arrests or DWI's. "STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES" and (most) of mine did not involve guns. Alcohol and other intoxicants YES, VERY MUCH SO, some were done stone cold sober. Some things are best left in the past, or to be dragged out & retold over and over whenever you get together with the people who were there when you did it. "REMEMBER THE TIME..."

One of my wife's favorite comments is that she thought my "war" stories were all "bull" until she met my mom. Then she learned that (with 3 boys in the family) they were mostly true! I remember my mom screaming "Get in the kitchen! You're bleeding all over the carpeting!"

TOO MANY TO REMEMBER.
Around the Thanksgiving table this year I told the story of me being on a TV show when app 2 y/o, Alan Ludden was the host. Apparently I had never told the wife in our 17 years together, or she forgot. Cries of disbelief and BS were thrown around. I can't remember ALL OF THEM, all the time. When first dating- early in our marriage my wife thought I was making it up. After spending a week with my family without me (when they were all alive), I picked her up from the airport, she was shellshocked and said "you really are the (normal) one" and I will believe you from now on. She still kinda has some doubts about some of the stories of my cousins, but as she meets them and hears them telling the stories, unsolicited, she knows I am crazy but can see their nuts.

Tell them they should stop "going commando" with baggy shorts.

Maybe a better title for this thread would have been "Unsupervised Men."
In my home state it is illegal to shoot from a vehicle whether or not its on private land or a private road unless one is a hunter with a disability. Wouldn't be surprised if that is the case elsewhere as well.
If confronted with self-defense situation when driving, the answer is Don't shoot, DRIVE!

In a past life I was riding down the road with an old friend of the family and she wanted to shoot my .357. The windows were rolled down. I stopped the car and I thought she would slide over and stick the gun out the window. I thought wrong but at least the gun was pointed at the open window. A .357 fired inside a car with out any hearing protection is REALLY LOUD. Larry

As related to me: A local Arizona rancher was driving back to his ranch house one evening in his new truck when he spotted a deer in his pasture. He pulled over, grabbed his scoped rifle from the window rack, rolled down the passenger window, drew a clear bead on the deer and proceeded to shoot. The report was deafening; his ears were ringing for a week. And, he hadn't thought about the height difference between his scope and the rifle bore as he shot through the top of the door panel, the door skin and shattered the window of his brand new truck. The deer got away.
