Default A Ruger to compete with the K22

Imagine if Bill Ruger had seen fit to build the Security Six platform in a .22 L.R format. And give it the lock-up of a Redhawk...the old triple lock format.

A little bit of hand fitting at the Ruger plant and Smith and Wesson would have had a run for their money.

In some ways, I wish this head's up competition between the two manufacturing giants had happened. We'd of all benefited from it....

2152hq,

I'm just bored and testing the water's on a Sat. night. I own a few k22's, k17's, and one .22 Outdoorsman.

Also have a few Security Six platform guns. When you look at them, they are similiar in size to the K-frames...albeit on Steroids. But there is no reason that they would not have made a great .22LR in the format.

Guess I was just wondering why Bill didn't go after S&W's piece of the pie in the DA .22 market?

When Ruger made his mark it was bringing back the single action big bore shooters. At that time there were alot of .22 DA's made by everyone. But I don't understand why not yet?Ruger has tryed to get in so many other aspects.Maybe theyr'e missing the boat.
All that dosen't explain the little SA Bearcat though.
There I go again thinking on line.

Ruger made the SP101 in .22LR. I have one in 4" and it is definitely one of my absolute keepers.

Default Ruger vs S&W

I can tell you folks back in the 1980's when I had a FFL i was buying S&W revolvers from Gil Hebard. I got a letter that went out to all that FFL's that bought from him that Ruger would no longer sell to anyone that sold both Rugers and Smith and Wessons acording to the letter I recieved he had decided to drop the Ruger line and stay with S&W. I guess Ruger later changed their minds because Rugers were back in the catalog the next time he issued one, the thing that sticks in my mind was a Ruger 77-22 for 210 dollars and I never bought my self one. I have both brands and like both of them. Jeff

I passed on a Ruger SP101 22lr and wound up paying $100 more for a 18-3. Wish I had both right now.

No question that the Ruger DA's are well designed and great functioning handguns, but they have a long way to go to get into the same category as a K22 IMHO. Ruger designed the DA's to be easier to manufacture than conventional DA revolvers they ended up clunky and blocky looking. The K22 is a sleek graceful looking revolver and that means a lot to many shooters. It would certainly be possible for Ruger to turn out a great looking DA, but they haven't done it so far.

I think too many people these days are into autos...and there are plenty of .22s to choose from...Bill did a good job with the SP101 in 22. Perfect platform for the .22...I feel the larger frames would be overkill in today's market...besides, the 617 already fills that niche...

I've asked the new Ruger president to offer a .22 lr and .22 wmr in a double action format. I'd love the SP-101 if it had a real adjustable sight instead of the chintzy so-called rear sight on it now. Put a 4" and 6" barrel on it, and it would literally shoot forever.

The GP-100 platform would be a little large, but that would be great too as a 10-shot. Again with adjustable sights and 4" and 6" versions.

Go to the Ruger website, and find the link that says "Tell the CEO" or something like that. Enough people send in the same or similar suggestions, and maybe we can see the results.
