Went to brother-in-law's fiance's house for dinner. Food was great, but topic came to guns and fiance showed me a "old piece of junk her father gave her", It was an 1890 Springfield breech loader with a spot for a percussion cap (external hammer) and US Army markings. There is a cleaning rod under the barrel. It was in excellent condition. Can anyone tell from that what it is? Thank you.
Official Military name is the Springfield Model 1873 Breach Loading Rifled Musket. Had a number of updates over the late 19th Century. This one may be a Model 1889 or 1890 Ramrod Bayonet rifle. Not a percussion gun. What you saw was the firing pin. It is in 45-70 caliber. The Model 1873 was used by the US Army from 1873 to about 1891. Replaced my the 30-40 Krag. This Model and the 1884 Model saw use into the Spanish American War by National Guard units.
