I have a Prewar Winchester Model 70 in .257 Roberts, it has a solid red Winchester pad and has been tapped in the rear bridge. Other than that the rifle is completely original 95% + finish. How would you value?
can you get an approximate serial#. how many holes in rear bridge? what is bbl length and configuration? to answer part of your inquiry, pad is probably not original but added . could have ordered from winchester that way but probably not. can you get a pic of the pad and rear bridge? would help a bunch.
+1 That combination of gun and cartridge is about as good as it gets!
For whatever it's worth, the Blue Book puts the gun in the $2000 +/- range assuming top condition and the standard factory version. Of course, alterations and higher grades affect the value. If I owned the gun, it would take more than that to pry it out of my hands!
Unfortunately it is extremely doubtful the pad is original and the holes in the rear bridge certainly are not from the factory. Considering the alterations, I would guess market would be in the $1000-$1200 range. Damn shame it was drilled and the pad added as the .257 Roberts is not only a great round, but a desirable caliber in the Model 70.
