Default Colt OP .22 (Updated with slightly less awful pictures)

I just put this old boy on layaway, so pardon the terrible cell phone pictures. It looks better in person. I'm a sucker for PD marked guns, so I took a gamble on this one. It looks right, anyway.

I paid four bills plus tax, but actually quite a bit less due to a trade in that I had very little invested in.

Are .22 Official Polices uncommon? I don't remember ever seeing one before, but I really haven't been looking. Serial number is 11458 - any guesses as to age? (1937?)

This thing has to have the lowest power to weight ratio of any handgun I own. Those six little holes in the cylinder leave a lot of metal.

That's the going rate on them. The 6 inchers are more common than the 4 inch barrel. Also they are more common than the S&W 22 version of the M&P. But they are neat guns and I got to shoot my first a few months ago. They are very accurate and just a ton of fun. Congrat's on a great find.

You are right. Your colt was made in 1937.
They are nice little pop guns and I think you will like it.
Here is a pic of mine. It is newer, made in 1954.

The .38 special version was by far the most common. Also made in .41 colt, 32-20, 22LR and .38 New Police (.38S&W) But I think all the .38 N.P. guns went to England.
The .22 had it`s own serial number range. Over 47,000 were made between 1930 and 1966. So it`s not all that rare.

Below is a .38 Special and what I thought was a 32-20. But the 32-20 turned out to be a Colt Army Special that had been rebarreled with an Official Police barrel. I never knew the difference until I looked up the serial number.

I have a 6 inch, wood stocked one that looks just like sigp220.45's. My grandfather gave it to my mother about 1948 or so. She shot a peeping tom with it.

S/N 109XX. I didn't think it was that old!

Before WWII, and for a while after, the Colt OP may have been the most carried revolver among American cops.

Those are some very sharp looking Colt .22s. Especially the Officiers models. Wish I had a couple of those in my collection.

My Colt OP .22 also dates to 1937.

Nice, I am a sucker for agency marked guns too. Where did you find that one, up in your end of the state or down in ABQ?

Its was in ABQ. I had to haul a guy from the reservation who shot his ex-woman in the back with a Ruger 10/22 because of some unauthorized hickeys. My regular after-court spot is Ron Peterson's Guns - lots of guns, plenty of turnover, and they don't run a museum - their stuff gets sold or reduced until it does.

I thought the display case looked a little like Peterson's. I usually drop in whenever I'm in or passing through ABQ but didn't when I passed through today (Ishould have). I will be back in ABQ in September for a couple weeks I be in and out of Peterson's several times. Maybe they'll have something to tickle my fancy...they usually do!

Again, a nice catch.

I don't even want to think about the amount of money I've dropped at Ron Peterson's. Of course, I have some nice, shiny stuff to show for it.

I bailed it out and have put about 150 rounds through it already. Its is lots of fun to shoot, though it does hit pretty high in relation to the sights with high velocity ammo.

I don't know what the deal is with the sideplate - maybe its been replaced. The mismatch looks worse in the picture than it does in the hand. Maybe it will clean up, but it doesn't really bother me.

Nothing special on the other side, except for the PD marking. Looks like it was done by hand.

The Lincoln PD must have really wanted to make sure everyone recognized their guns - I didn't notice the backstrap until I picked it up.

The Pachmayr grip adapter is just in place until a Tyler T grip purchased from a member here arrives.
