Default Peter Gunn's Gun?

I just saw my first "Peter Gunn" episode! It ran on the local RTN station. The theme music was the best part of the show, but the 30-minute plot wasn't bad either. Question: What gun did Gunn pack? It looked to be a S&W snubbie, but it could have been a Colt. Any "Gunn" experts out there?

BTW: I'm now listening to the Peter Gunn theme song. If you like free theme music, check out televisiontunes.com.

It was a blued Chief's Special, Model 36 or 37. I was a kid when I watched that, but could ID guns from when I was about 12.

Good theme music, too.

77 Sunset Strip had the same sort of guns for their PI's, but one had a Colt Cobra or DS. The one set in New Orleans (Bourbon Street Beat) had the PI's with M-36's, but they had a Smith .357 in the office safe. I think it was a 3.5-inch barrel M-27. They got it out when they expected really bad guys or going into a swamp, etc.

I remember the Peter Gunn series quite well. My step son asked me " What is Peter Gunn's fathers name?" Told him I didn't know. He said " Pop Gunn".

I was in 8th grade when Peter Gunn first hit the airwaves. I loved that show. My parents were concerned because it was so violent, but loved the jazz/blues singer.

Craig Stevens -- incredibly cool actor. I had to look him up to see if he was still alive. Alas, no. Died in 2000.

Never missed an episode. Had an LP of the Henry Mancini theme song. Show ran from '58-'61. I was 11-13. My dad (who hated TV) watched with me in hopes that Pete's girlfriend would appear.

If you got the same record that I did, it had some other songs from the show, too. Lola Albright was the girl who sang in the club, I think. Blonde babe.

Peter Gunn was a pretty sophisticated guy and the show was a cut above typical TV fare.

Yes, her name was Edie on the show. Pete had to compete with all the horse operas. My dad would also watch (Super Circus) with me on Sunday A.M.. Super Circus was a local live kids show that featured Mary Hartline, a super looking blonde that marched around in a red cheer leader suit. She had her own guns.

I was on some kids' show about like that when I was little. The girl who ran it didn't have a red cheerleader outfit, though. Maybe the TV hostess wanted to be a cheerleader and this was her only way? I've heard that lots of girls hate cheerleaders if they can't be one.

Or, maybe this was her Halloween costume, too.

Do you remember how Peter carried his gun? I'm thinking it was in a crossdraw holster, but can't really recall. I think that's what most TV detectives used. I don't recall any using a strong side holster or having a really fast draw.

Greetings all, as a young lad growing up on the southside of Chicago I was in the audience at Super Circus with the blonde babe known as Mary Hartline. It is just a dim memory now.

I LOVED Peter Gunn and Henry Mancini's music. I remember it as being mostly dialog and you had to pay attention. (A thinking man's detective show, as I remember.) I don't even remember him having a gun.

I seem to recall he had a snub nosed revolver and while I cannot be certain, for some reason I thought it was a Colt Detective Special.

Yes Marry Hartline was more than just a great shape in a red outfit . She owned and ran Central rent a crane in N.W. Indiana.

As I (very dimly) recall, Gunn carried his piece *** (small-of-back) - very unconventional for the time and very uber cool.

Regards.

Creig Stevens was a cool guy in an area of not so cool TV shows...Gunn didn't carry in small of the back, that was a undercover cop show, before undercover was a normal part of policing...Seems like actors name was Mike something...heck I'm 72 I barely remember what I had for breakfast. that small of the back holster became a rage and they are still being made...Tough on your back riding in a vehicle....Oop's I guess I snitched myself off, I had one...Young cops will try anything once......Got to take a nap..

Ah, yes, that theme! It definitely defined the late '50/ early '60s era...

I have the PG Theme in my iTunes file...on the Blues Brothers soundtrack, of all things!

Thanks for the website mention! :-)

I don't think much of that carry, and Jim Wilson, the ex-sheriff turned gun writer, told me that if you get knocked down in a fight, the holster position can easily cause spinal injury.

Otherwise, I liked Mannix, but preferred Peter Gunn. It was a more sophisticated show than most.

Another show that I liked then (I guess I was maybe 12) was, Adventures in Paradise, with Gordon Somebody. When he had a a gun, it was a Webley MK IV .38. He kept it hidden on his boat, sailing near Australia.

I'm almost certain that Peter Gunn had a M-36 or 37 S&W, but can't recall if it had the early small triggerguard. It would have had the flat cylinder release. I think the show was gone by the time that that changed, about 1966.

I tried to find Peter Gunn on the Imdb database, but couldn't. But I'm almost sure about the Chief's Special. Not sure, but I think he carried it crossdraw.

The detectives of that era seem more real for their times than many do now.

Any pic I find of Pete looks like a 36-37. Another very knowledgeable forum guy says he saw a Gunn episode where Gunn presses a revolver to a "bikers" belly. The gun is clearly a Det Spec.

PETER GUNN THEME 1958 - 1961 - YouTube

Someone needed to post the theme song. Many here haven't heard it. Note the gun on the record alblum. I really do feel it was a Chief's Special.

Could have been a Terrier or .32, I guess, depending on what the prop people had. But the .38 Special is most likely and what the character would have probably used.

The Mike Conners as undercover cop show was "Tightrope"
Tightrope (TV Series 1959–1960) - IMDb

I think Peter Gunn carried whatever the prop department had handy. Sometimes the gun changed between camera angles.

You may well be right. Mike Connors did play both Mannix and the guy on, "Tightrope." Don't know if he wore the gun the same place on both shows.

Note that Craig Stevens looks tired and not too focussed in those pics. Not like he was tense and really about to shoot someone. He must have grown very tired of all the publicity photos. I suspect that most actors do, at least those without huge egos.

Mike Connors as Mannix. I thought he should have played Matt Helm in the movies, not Dean Martin.

There's a full length movie called "Gunn" on Netflix, if you can invest the time.

What do you combat shooters say about the way Craig Stevens holds his J-frame in those publicity stills? That doesn't look either accurate or secure to me, but maybe I'd feel differently if I could top-lift a a basketball or dinner plate with one hand.

Heres a scene from Gunn. PG is on the right. I see 2 cyl. flutes, suggesting 5 shooter. Supported ejector rod = S&W.

Peter Gunn and Bourbon Street Beat were my two favs. didn't care much for 77 Sunset Strip. Also Mannix was another fav. of mine but, it came a bit later on. Can't leave out Dragnet with Jack Webb and Harry Morgan.

Mathias was a six foot four inch blond guy, Mike Connors definitely not!

In the early series Mannix packed a PPK in a cute little rack spring holster, cross draw. All the Bad Guys carried M&P 2". Then things changed, he carried a revolver and the Bad Guys all PPKs. Musta been that James Bond influence.

TALES OF THE 77TH BENGAL LANCERS - 1956 - Phil Carey, Warren Stevens - opening theme - YouTube

Not a detective show, but one of my favorites. Phillip Carey later played Phillip Marlowe, so I guess this is detective show related.

This one was about two young officers in the 77thBengal Lancers in colonial India, and probably couldn't be filmed today. Political Correctness...

I know this old, but I just rewatched the first episode and I looked up what he had, but as I hit the forum there was a pretty clear shot. Definitely looks like a detective special 1st issue. You can see the half moon front sight and the exposed ejector rod. I may be wrong but it strongly resembles at DS. I didn't read all the way through the list because the subject got onto Lola Albright so I just skipped to the bottom.

If COZI-TV runs Peter Gunn or any of the other shows y'all mentioned I'll be watching. They run The Lone Ranger at least twice a day, and Kojak and Quincy and Ironside (original) have been advertised recently. Oh, the Rockford Files, too. Some fun old shows that I will watch.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Have the Peter Gunn series on DVD, watched every episode. Back in the day it was a great show!

Pete's girlfriend Edie Hart / Lola Albright just passed back in March at the age of 92

"Peter Gunn" The Most Deadly Angel (TV Episode 1961) - IMDb

If you can find this Peter Gunn episode, the lady uses a break-top revolver. Maybe somebody can figure out what it is.

Lola Albright was certainly among the best lookers of the 1950s and '60s.

For some reason, I never watched Peter Gunn when it was on the first time. Was it any good?

I've never seen it in re-run format either, but many of the popular series from the earlier days of television didn't age well.

Peter Gunn is one of the first "adult" detective shows without fake heroics and depended on story writing and acting. While it might seem archaic and formulaic today it was a groundbreaker for its time. Its theme song still stands as one of the best...alongside Rawhide, Hawaii Five-0 and maybe a few others.

M Squad with Lee Marvin was another good one as was The Untouchables...at least for the first season or two.

I rember M Squad and also The Detectives (?) with Robert Taylor. Neither compared with The Untouchables which survived into modern day far better than many such shows. Little of it had any historical accuracy (a big deal to some who can't enjoy a story as a story) but the episodes were good ones and the incredible list of guest stars was among the best.

Someone needed to post the theme song. Many here haven't heard it. Note the gun on the record alblum. I really do feel it was a Chief's Special.
I couldn't connect to YouTube here.

I have the album too. I knew of the original show when I was a boy and bought the album when I found it at a rummage sale.

I stumbled across this band playing the Peter Gunn theme. They sound pretty good.

In season 1, episode 1, he had a Detective Special. He pointed it at a guys back and cocked it, clockwise. In the still below, it's five shot S&W Chiefs Spl.

Could have been Tommy Gunn.

I was 10 when PG first aired. Loved the show, the music and the cars. In the 1969 series Peter drove a New Plymouth Sport Fury which was a very cool car. My dad bought a new one in 69 and I thought it was the most beautiful car I’d ever seen. That thing was a block long or at least it seemed that long.

I really like Mike Hammer and Mr Lucky as well.

Edit: And let’s not forget Joe Friday in Dragnet.

Proving every thread ever published here becomes immortal.

When I was in high school during that era, one of my courses, I think it was civics related, was taught by the football coach. He loved Peter Gunn. Every morning after the night that an episode was broadcast, he would fill the class period with a class postmortem discussion, so most of the students watched it. It was fairly interesting. Lola Albright was fairly hot stuff for high school boys of that time.

Another good show from that time and another Mancini song, "Mr. Lucky." Great sounds from a Hammond B3 organ.

Ross Martin played Mr. Lucky's sidekick.

Henry Mancini is unequalled as a film/TV music composer.
