Default Manageable Ammo for Pistol Grip Shotgun

Yesterday I bought a Mossberg Cruiser and took it to a range to break it in. I tried out target ammo first, no problems there, got bored and moved up to 3 inch slugs and buckshot. I won't make that mistake again.

Does anyone have experience with pistol grip only shotguns?

Try some Remington Low Recoil buckshot.

They also have low recoil slugs.

The wife and I have both killed wild pigs with the Remington low recoil slugs. They shot to the sights in her Drilling.

Both slugs went completly through the pigs.
They were shot at @20 yards of so.

if you read the manual .. assuming its not a used gun it will state that in pistol grip configuration your advised to fire from the hip.

I have been packing weapons professionally for almost a half century and most of that time I have had a "tactical" shotgun around. PG only shotguns are pretty much useless for any thing but door breaching which takes place at ranges measured in inches. I accept folding stock shotguns as a necessary evil for when one must transport a shotgun in close quarters, as in a vessel, vehicle or aircraft. The folder to be unfolded ASAP upon disembarking. I have heard from a bunch of folks who brag that they can shoot accurately at 30 yards or more with a PG shotgun, to this I say something not repeatable here. A PG may be usable under a coat for ranges up to 7 feet, but is otherwise useless. Remember I am not talking about a full stocked gun that has a PG, but guns with a PG only.
You will not see any professionals using such guns, except as breaching tools, which a full stocked gun can do as well. You may see a pro with a PG only gun in a backpack position while they hand carry their usable long gun and use the PG shotgun for breaching.
Get a real stock of your preference, if you ar really recoil shy, get a Knox Stock and use low recoil ammo from Federal, the difference is not noticable in terminal effect, but will reduce felt recoil substantially.
The PG only guns look neat, as in the movies, but remember that the movies also show PG only assault rifles and submachine guns shooting accurately, which is also total BS.
Arnold, et al, do not have to worry about accuracy, but I assure that one thing is certain: "You can miss with a shotgun"! Contrary to gun shop lore, as espoused by gun shop commandos.
Please do it the right way.

I wanted to fire from the hip, but the indoor range I went to has partitions waist high.

you say that as though it were a problem.

Stick to 2 3/4" non magnum buckshot and you'll be fine, usually.

I'd disagree that no one who knows what they're doing uses a PG only shotgun. Special models that would be considered AOWs have been used by a number of Federal agencies for things other than breaching. They aren't exactly common, but they're around.

Ditch the PG that the Mossberg comes with and put on one from Speedfeed. It'll fit your hand better. With practice you can hit targets room distance away with a PG shotgun without much trouble.

I have three cut down shotguns. They're handy in a vehicle, to cuddle with at night, or for back yard snakes.

While a full stocked gun is more useful in general, PG ones sometimes get a bad reputation undeservedly. They're useful in certain limited circumstances, just not all purpose.

I never ue 3" or 2 3/4" mags in any social shotgun, I don't like low recoil either. When I could find it, I liked the Winchester OOO buck in standard velocity loading. I don't think that the increase in recoil on the mags is worth it, and I don't entirely trust low recoil loads in terms of losing velocity (compared to standard offerings) when fired from relatively short (18") bbls.

Yes, many "experts" claim that pistol grip only shotguns are useless, but they are really saying that they have not mastered them.
Technique is everything...a good foreward push on the fore end helps control recoil. I agree that the Speedfeed birdshead grip is the best...it feels the same as shooting a standard buttstock from the hip. I also use the Hogue overmolded fore end so I can really grip it tight.
I have gotten good usable accuracy out to 25yds using standard slugs, and 00 buck.
It is a special purpose weapon...close range such as indoors.
Here is my Mossberg with the Speedfeed grip:

I consider my PG 870 as inside only HD special.

2 3/4 buckshot - NO magnum loads.

Like to practice hip-shooting by putting clays on the berm at 15 and 20 feet.

You'll have no regrets with the Knoxx stock. Make sure you get the recoil reducing version (there are two).
