I have several .22 rifles but I like the Henry Golden Boy the best.

I have a Marlin 39A, got it from a good friend. Has a little squirrel pin on the toe of the stock, marbles peep sight, I love it. Long range Browning A-Bolt 22 a dream. Hard to pick a favorite. No one has brought up the Savage with it's great trigger.

I concur with the single-shot school of thought, even though my first 22 rifle was a 10/22. I'd recommend a bolt action that can be loaded one at a time, but with a magazine that can be used later after proper gun handling and shooting technique is well-entrenched.

No doubt the single shot is best when teaching a youngster to shoot. Both my kids, both now grown had Remington 514 single shots to learn on. Now I've got two grandkids and the 8 yo girl Kylie is the proud owner of a Winchester 67. Her 10 yo brother Tyler has a Winchester 47. Both are learning on a chipmunk because I refuse to cut the Winchester stocks.

As far as their granpop's rimfire rifles go , I have some gooduns'. A Stevens 416 target, a 1946 Winchester 52B, a Winchester 52 sporter, a Mossy 44US, a MAS45 Mauser, A Sako Finnfire sporter, a Browning T-Bolt, a Remington 40X and probably another one or two that I can't think of at the moment. I've been Jonesin' for a Winchester 63. Theright one ain't come along yet.

For teaching a child to shoot I would use a Chipmunk .22 bolt action rifle. They are single shot, well made and shoot well. When the youngster grows up some you can buy an upgraded stock and keep on using the action.

For my 2 sons they learned using a 10/22. I had to have something scoped due to the oldest having their mothers eyes. I also needed something short due to their fathers stature. I already a 10/22. I bought a couple of take off stocks for around 10 bucks and cut them off to suit. The kids sanded them and painted them themselves. They had a ball that winter, but not as much as I did. They have got their own set-ups now and are exceptional shots with a scope and open sights, they must have got that from their mother

I have several nice .22 rifles. But about 6 weeks ago I found a Jap made Winchester model 63 at a farm auction. It has quickly become my favorite .22 rifle.
The little beast is high quality. And it shoots and handles just as good as it looks.

How often do you clean yours, I used to think it was almost impossible. I bought one of the 1976 commemorative and just cleaned it recently. I found a link on you tube.
