Default Another venture into Colt land

Hi all, was out and about last week and came across a 1944 vintage Colt Offical Police. Very nice condition with a good quality reblue done to it. So far nothing special till I looked again and it's a five incher, I love five inch service revolver's and I haggeled a deal and home it came with me. Took it out and put a hundred round's through it, boy does thirty year's of S&W DA shooting screw you up with a Colt DA! Shot fairly well and will do a lot better once I get used to the trigger. I really should stop this sort of thing but dang it, it's fun.

Very nice looking Colt.

Can't say the same about the gun rug.

That's definitely a nice looking Colt. I picked up a 4"-er
that isn't as nice, but still a nice gun.
What throws you off about the trigger? I haven't been shooting DA all that long. Is it that it doesn't "stage" before breaking?

It's hard to describe, but there is a very, very distinct difference between a colt and S&W DA trigger. It's all based on how different their lockwork is.

Hey TACC1, as kscardsfan said it's hard to decribe. The Colt's finish up thier lock up with the very last bit of trigger travel and this is very different from the S&W that locks up before that last bit of travel. This gives you a very different feel and if you are used to one or the other there is a bit of a learning curve.

In DA, a Colt does most of the cocking fairly easily, but the required trigger pull just keeps adding and adding, usually to a greater weight than a Smith. It is definitely not as smooth, and you will certainly not be surprised when it goes off. In fact, you will probably be wondering why it took this long. This is possibly a safety factor in some situations.

In SA, there is no reason why the Smith and Colt cannot have equal pulls, although I think that the Smiths are likely to be better out of the box. The process of cocking a Colt SA somehow seems easier, but there is surely nothing wrong with either, and it is of no consequence.

I have both a 4" and a 6" OP, both of which I obtained VERY inexpensively. Both shoot 158's to POA, and are very accurate. Nice guns, no better or worse than a Model 10 which shoots to POA.

I think the term used for the Colt's trigger pull is "stacking", meaning it gets harder the further you pull it. I have a couple of Colt's but passed on several Pythons because of that reason, and the insane prices.

That's the same pattern on my favorite pair of underware!
Nice Colt, Bob. I have "Coltwood" grips on a '53 Cobra and I actually like them. Now you have a gun just like the TV Untouchables carried.

i respect colt revolvers and have a 100 year old army special and a trooper mk5. i never cared for the "mush" feel as opposed to the crisp s&w action.
colts rule in the automatics as smith rules in revolvers.

I ventured into Colt Land a while back. Picked up an older Python and a Diamondback, both nice looking guns, but I never could figure out what all the hub-bub's about. I recently saw a used (read fired).22 Diamondback sell in one day for $1,100 at a local shop. I'll hold on to mine to help pay the kids' college bills but if I'm going to the range or defending the house, I still prefer my Model 10.

Well, that figures. A .38 Diamondback is very common, whereas .22 is rare.
