keith44spec., you and I are close to the same vintage, I'd be surprised if you hadn't carried some"older" long guns than those new fangled black guns. {The M14 I can believe}. As always, all my best, Joe.

A Remington 870

Colt or Bushmaster AR-15

Colt series 70 in .45

One of about 40 different S&W's, but....

.... if there's gonna' be harm done, I just stay home.

Old enough to carry the M16A1, (GM Hydromatic), and 1911A1! Carry a Glock 30sf most of the time now.

From an Infantry standpoint: PRC-148 MBITR Radio along with the issue M4 and M9. Works in any situation. There aint nothing like planned air support. All BS stops when our air arrives.............

An M-16 or M-4 with an M-9 in a chest or shoulder holster, body armor, a Kevlar helmet, and an M-240B gunner within arm's reach.

If I KNEW there was gonna be trouble I'd stay home with a plethora of long guns available. I.E. an M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M12 Winchester Riot Gun and a few others of a more sporting nature.
When I've gone out, either on business or for personal matters, and have known I was going someplace I might not come back from unless I'm prepared, I've usually carried on my person my Glock 23, backed up by my Glock 27, backed up by my Glock 22 in the car. Sometimes it's my S&W M66 2 1/2" backed up by my S&W M640-1. All of them with at least one reload, and of course several knives. Unfortunately, though I try to avoid situations like that, they are occasionally thrust upon me, usually involving clients in very bad situations.
I really don't want to get into a fight of any kind, especially a gunfight, but if the balloon goes up, I intend to make it back home.

We had a speaker once that had been a forward air controller working with the Northern Alliance when they fought the Taliban and drove them out. Once those guys saw what the air power could do, they became very protective of the air controller; anytime there was shooting nearby, they'd push him down and pile themselves on top of him.

Several times I have had the need to carry and I have chosen a Sig P220 with cast 230g TC. Once I carried a 2.5" 686 stuffed with 125g JHP that I loaded over 1400fps. - this was after a home burglary and I was advised to pack by the local LEO.

Only had to clear leather to show the P 220 once. Couple bad guys with soiled linen was the result. The rest of the times I was able to go about under the wire.

Hunting I carry a Remington 700 in 6.5-06 with a 3" 629-2 loaded with 265g GCSWC @ 1200fps.

These days I have more options.

I could carry, probably would carry, an accurized Mini 30 with 150g NBT load out.

or

I could pack a Marlin 1894 .44 mag.

Either would be a good SHTF rifle.

Well I have a Glock M-23 in the car at all times and my truck gun is a Ruger Speed-Six. I also pocket carry a Kel-Tec P3AT. That about covers my beer runs and off road excursions. Hopefully no blood will be encountered.

Rem 870
81mm Mortar
60mm Mortar

Now as a civilian I make it a point to avoid harmful situations.

Back in the day...(burp) I carried a Model 58. We were issued Model 870s, and I always had either an M-1 carbine or an AR-180 stuck under the head rests of my patrol car.

The only one that I fired in circumstances other than training was the 58.

Three feet of shovel handle and a 6906. I'm almost 60 and never needed more than the shovel handle. Yet. Joe

Unhappy For go-time......hope it never happens.

My old (gone now) Colt detective special had to be used to diffuse a situation one snowy night. A Sig P-220 .45ACP (Early West German) usually does nightly bedside duty along with an AMD-65 folded to make a 30rd. 25.5 inch persuader if need be. I hope no-one ever wants to trade his life for anything I have laying around my place. I don't think I have anything worth it. But, who am I to judge?.......Sprefix

The first few months I carried my SIG P226 .357. Eventually I replaced it with a new P226R 9mm with nightsights and a mounted Streamlight M3. Longguns are a flattop Bushmaster 16" with a Bushnell Holosight and a 7 shot Remington 870. I haven't qualified with my no-lock 642 yet.

M-60 machine gun & a 1911 by Colt. The running joke was the .45 was to shoot yourself with if anything happened to your machine gun.
M-14 that felt like grip of the stock was custom made for me. Loved that rifle.
M-16 one of which was made by General Motors ... never developed a feel for any of them.
Grease gun for ambush duty. Slow shooting .45 that was really good at disturbing the peace.
Last but not least a Claymor bag of grenades. ........... loved grenades.

If I'm ever in a popsition to really indulge myself, I'd still really like to have an M1A1 .... wood stock not fiberglass ... web sling .... magazines etc. ... etc.

The only "harms way" for me was during my decade as a Reserve Deputy.

I'm proud to say that all four weapons (belt guns) were Smith & Wesson revolvers.

Model 10 and Model 15 department property weapons to start.
Model 28 was my first privately owned gun, 4" with Armalloy finish.
When the 686 was announced, I put my order in for a 4" version and had it on my belt the week I picked it up.

If you count CCW in Detroit, MI and South Bend, IN as being in harm's way, then it would be a Kimber Compact CDP, a Kel-Tec P3AT, a Springfield Armory Mil-Spec, and in the last month my new 442-1.

I wasn't thinking clearly after reading the post that mentioned going to get beer 'cause I think I'm running low.
Harms way: U.S. Army, 1970-1972, M-16, Colt 1911.

Hi Joe;

I like the old stuff you mention in your first post. Real steel and wood. A Winchester Model 1907 stands ready to repel boarders in this household. It may be obsolete and the ammo hard to find but I have plenty and can handload for it. It hasn't been fired as much as my AR 15 but has a better reliability record as it has never failed to function.

A bump to the top of an old thread to see if we can get some new responders on what they have used.

'68 - '69 in RVN I carried first a M1911A1 and then an M 16. Didn't fire either of them in anger.
