Picture of a knife I made.
Well sort of, I bought the blade many years ago from Koval Knives, which has since been bought by Jantz. When I bought the blade it was the best Damascus blade Koval had and Tony Koval ranted for an hour about who made it and how good it was. At the time I thought $75 was a lot to pay but 20 years later it has been a good blade and has seen a lot of use. The handle is sambar stag with maple and bloodwood spacers. There is also a small compass inlayed in the butt end.
I was tinkering in the garage yesterday and found that I neglected to oil the blade the last time I used and it had a light coating of rust. So it gave me something to do and I cleaned her up. Then for fun I took a picture.

Is that wood in front of the stag, on the handle?
How did you deal with uneven areas that you marked with red arrows, where the brass guard had to go?

Yes, that is bloodwood and rock maple that I glued together as a spacer. I was sort of going for a Scagel look without being a complete ripoff. Or is it tulip wood??? I don't rightly remember.

I used a fine ******* file and fit the blade to the guard, then silver soldered the guard to the blade.

That's some real nice work.!
Can you tell us more about the actual handle (stag) Is that a antler or what. Did you shape that or was it a blank of some sort. How do you work with that, sanding? Then is it sealed with something?

Very nice!
I had the opportunity to go to Blade this year. Listening to the makers explain their techniques was fascinating.

The stag is Sambar stag from some sort of East Indian deer. Sambar is very dense and does not have the hollow center like elk stag.
I used epoxy to attach the handle to the tang, and then used a belt grinder, disc sander, and files to shape it to fit my hand. Then lots and lots of hand sanding ending with 600 grit wet/dry. Then used a large buffing wheel to polish everything up. The only finish used on both the stag and wood is buffing grease and gun oil.

VERY nice job!
The close up of the blade before you put the grip on it shows what a fine piece of Damascus steel that is!
That is one nice looking knife.
