Heavy little bugger. Built tougher than just about anything that size, and that one sure is a looker! Nice grab. The Ruger GP-100 is the "go to" workhorse in the stable for training, and testing loads. I think you are really going to like the SP-101.

Nice little gun with enough weight to handle most any .357 load without undue pain.
I'll admit to being a Ruger fan, mainly the single actions but FWIW my main carry gun for the last 5 years has been a Ruger P97 .45. (:

I'm really a big fan of the SP101. It's one big downfall is that it is too heavy for pocket carry. That same weight, though, makes it a very shootable little gun.
I had one for years until the wife discovered it. She decided it needed to become hers.
I also have a Black Hawk in .41 Rem Mag and a 10/22. I've never considered myself a Ruger guy, but they keep showing up in the gun safe.

Ruger is now S&W's only real competition, and I do like both the GP-100 and the SP-101.
I had a Super Blackhawk, too, and wish that I hadn't had to sell it to pay a tax bill. It pointed very well, and has greater durability than a Smith .44 Mag. if both are shot a lot with full loads. And its weight is lighter than their ponderous Redhawk!
The SP-101 with a barrel a fraction over three inches is probably the smallest all-round revolver for someone who needs over .38 Special power. I think it endures longer than equivalent S&W's, and is less disturbing to shoot with .357 ammo.

No Rugers in the stable yet, but my next purchase is going to be a Redhawk in 45 Colt.

That is a nice looking pistola! Is it the Talo special? I've seen a few offered on various gun boards but they are not very common. You planning to carry it or just put it up for collecting?

I am as big a fan of the SP101 and anyone-It's just as heavy as a steel J frame and a better gun. When it comes to carry, Alloy frame J frames in .38 rule but if you want an all steel little gun the SP101 has the Model 60 beat hands down.
I like the scratched up one thouogh.

I like Ruger. The first handgun I ever purchased was a Ruger Blackhawk, sold it many years ago to a former coworker. I tried buying it back from the guy several months ago, no luck.
This is my only Ruger offering today and I do like it.

I have one Ruger. The securitysix. It is a very fine revolver. It dont likes my reloded .38. The headspace on the cilinder is very tiny. It are very sturdy revolvers and very well made. I still prefaer my 681 above the Ruger. S&W works al the time you need them.

I recently purchased a security six w/ 4"bbl.
It's a really nice shooter. Rugers are my second choice after the S&W of any flavor.

That's a tastefully done revolver, both engraving and grips.
Most are overdone IMHO.

S&W or Ruger? We all know that they both have built some winners and some losers.SP101 is a winner.
Apples or oranges?
Ford or Chevy?
And that one is nice!No turn line?
Whitecoyote,I'd find out more about it before I "Broke it in".

Single action only for me when it comes to rugers. Yours, however is one that would tempt me to the double action side, very nice.

I'm a big fan also, but I would differ with you on the second statement,
Chubbs. My SP101 is my only carry piece, and I carry it only in my pocket. The weight hasn't given me any problem at all.
I also shoot only .357s in it. It just requires sufficient practice, like most things.

I had an action job done on this one to make the trigger smoother and not *quite* so stiff (it's still hard enough to be safe) and added these Hogue grips so all the fingers have a some place to be.
I'm not as accurate with it as I'd like to be, but it's a joy to carry.

I have a SP101, really like it. One of my "house" guns.
Those grips/stocks just are not right on your gun. Please remove them and send them to me at once!
Wish I could find a pair of those!!

Word of warning, if you are thinking about buying an SP101 (they are very well built guns) handle one first. The trigger guard hits my finger very hard when firing this gun. After about 25 rounds, it leaves a bruise. It is just incompatible with some shooter's grips.
If it works for you, you will be happy with it. I had to sell mine.

The first handgun I bought back in the 1970's was a Ruger Security Six in stainless with a 4" barrel. I still have it and it has fired thousands of rounds of handloads and factory ammunition. It still shoots as well as when I got it. The trigger has actually gotten smoother over the years with use. I wanted a M66 at the time but couldn't find or afford one. I settled for the Security Six. I found that ir served as well or better for what I needed than the S&W or similar type of Colt.
The Ruger revolver design is more advanced and durable than that found on S&W revolvers. The ability to "field strip" the Ruger for cleaning and repair is a good feature and the solid frame is stronger. Ruger revolvers don't seem a refined as S&W revolvers but they are actually more advanced in terms of engineering.
The SP-101 is an excellent small revolver. I think its a small belt gun for my purposes but it handles the .357 mag cartridge better than most small revolvers do. I have seen the ones with the laser engraving like that one at some gun shows lately and they are fine looking. They do dress up the pedestrian Ruger up quite a bit. Your new revolver is not only attractive but it is an excellent revolver for shooting and carry.

Very Nice Whitecoyote,
That is one of the Talo version Engraved SP101's. I was impressed with the 1st one I saw and almost bought it. the price was extremely good compared to other Engraved guns I've seen. A classy piece of Steel

As-issued Rugers don't do much for me, but custom revolvers on Ruger frames are another story. Speaking of which, I sure wish they made the SP-101 with a 4" barrel.

I've had one for a few years now...used to be a carry gun but my P2000 is lighter and holds 14 rounds...but it makes a great teaching gun for new shooters with it's smooth action, low recoil and simple operation....

I have had a few Rugers in the past, not my favorite guns. Had a KP89 and a KP90, both decockers, and a Stainless Redhawk .44. Found the Redhawk excessively heavy. It went bye-bye and was replaced by a no-dash 629. The autos seemed to be excessively fat in the grip. This was especially true of the KP90, absolutely no reason for a single stack .45 to be that fat. They were replaced by a 639 and a 645.
I must say that they were extremely reliable weapons though. Even though I found them uncomfortable I managed to shoot them well.

Sir, that is a beautiful little jewel of a Ruger. I like them very much, my first purchase was a Mk II, moved on to a bunch since.
I recently picked up a GP-100 Royal Phoenix that was made for one of the distributors, high polish, 4" blued steel and Hogue walnut grips, just like the Good Lord and Bill Ruger intended. It is quite possibly my favorite revolver, on par with a Python and an L-Comp.
Are these still available from Talo? What is the stock number?

I think the SP101 is great. The one thing I did not like was the heavy trigger pull. Also, a little heavy for concealed carry. I replaced mine with a S&W Model 640-1 .357. If I were looking for a good belt gun for a trail gun/hiking gun, the SP101 would be perfect.

Not a big fan of their DA revolvers, but I do like their P series autos and Blackhawk SA's.
I also own a 10/22 and a MKIII 22/45. I like both.
The Super Redhawk looks like it was built by USSR-era Russian forced labor...
Theur QA is slipping but their customer service is great.
