I once had possession of S/42 5566. I found out that 5566 isn't a unique #.

Good score! Lugers bringing big bucks these day. Hope ya got a decent deal. I once had a 42 marked Luger made in 1939. Back in the 70s it ran me $250 but it was a reblue with new grips an unmatched magazine. Am sure it would still go for a lot more these days. Thanks for sharing.

P.08 pistols were numbered in blocks from 1 to 9999 then a letter was added repeats from a to z then starts allover without letter.
The letter(if present) is at the front of the frame.
Here you have a byf coded Mauser from 1941 8024 o block.

Call me a purist, but I think the last actual Lugers were the two hundred pistols manufactured from scratch semi-surrepticuously in East Germany in the 1950s. That was the last (abortive) effort to produce the pistol for actual service.
Everything since then, including the Mauser Lugers from the 1960s/70s and the Stoegers, were just replicas for aficionados
PS: No offense, that stainless Stoeger is a beautiful gun!

none taken, it is what it is . i bought it from the orig. owner in Jan 2020 for $300., he shot 3 rds and put it back in the case and said the gun sucked (and it did). it had an 18lb trigger i adjusted the spring and greased it... the trigger is 8lbs now and shoots very well

Almost forgot
Krieghoff made Lugers never had a suffix they just run the numbers up.
They are generally very expensive. And I don't have one.

I think that’s mostly driven by comparative rarity. What, like 10- or 12,000? And then .... ooooh, Luftwaffe! Sexy!
They are reputed to be very high quality.
And then there are the 200 new replica Lugers that Krieghoff made in 2006. They lack any historical relevance, and look at the price on the one in the 2015 RIA auction below . You can get three or more nice original all-matching pre-1945 Lugers for that.

Of course that rarity and high price also encourage forgery. One needs to be really sure of what he's doing if going the "krieghoff way". And, Luftwaffe yes sure, but pilots, specially fighter pilots, as a rule did not carry Lugers. .32 pistols being far more common. As for the high quality. They are good looking for sure, but since most people who have them do not shoot them, the high quality is somewhat a moot, and mostly umproved, issue.
Mausers are very good shooters that much I know.

I'll leave that for those with much deeper pockets than me.

And I don’t think there are any stories so far of Luftwaffe pilots using their pistols to shoot down an enemy after the machine guns jammed
The Luftwaffe Lugers largely went to the Luftlandetruppen (airborne), who fought mostly as regular infantry after the Crete debacle, and other ground combat forces of the Luftwaffe like the Flak divisions and the actual Luftwaffe field divisions, fat Hermann‘s own infantry.
