Do I "need" a 45 Colt revolver?
Am I caliber deficient?
I have more than a few revolvers in 22, 38, 357, 44 Spl and 44 mag.
No 45 Auto(revolver) or 45 Colt. Not really a single action guy but was wondering about a 45 Colt in DA/SA. I reload so ammo is not a problem.
Just wondering if the 45 Colt has something over a 44Spl or light 44 Mag loads? I only shoot paper so if would just be for that.
Also thinking about a 45 Auto revolver, 625 but the whole moon clip thing seems redundant.Could load 45 auto rim but still is odd to me.
So what's the pros of the 45 Colt?

Unless you were into Single Action Army revolvers, I don't think you NEED a .45 Colt. Between the .44 Special and .44 Magnum you seem to have things covered as far as large bore revolvers go. JMHO

Sir:
I too regarded the 625 moon clip thing as an odd redundancy especially in the face of all those other calibers.
I learned I was in error and most happily accept having been introduced to such a sweet shooting revolver without which, my entire range experience would have been seriously deficient.
And the 45 auto rim is a habit that seems to be growing on me as well.
Good luck finding a remedy to the affliction.
Photos or it didn't happen.

The .45Colt allows many more reload options than the .45acp, but, if you are punching paper, only, the .45acp will be cheaper. I have both the .45Colt and a number of .45acp revolvers. I like the .45Colt as my woods gun and the .45acp's for everything else. Moonclips are a very, very fast way to reload the revolver and, in fact, can beat out both speed loaders and magazines, as demonstrated by Jerry M.

I'd get both. The 45 auto is really fast reloading with moon clips. The 45 Colt carries a lot of nostalgia with it. Yep, you "need" both. If your considering a single action, you can get a Ruger Blackhawk that comes with both cylinders.

As I have said on several ocasions "what's need got to do with it? We're talking 'addiction' here!"
With a M645, M4506, & Combat Commander already to satisfy the 45 itch (does a Freedom Arms 454 count?) need was not justifyable.
I answered an add for a Colt 6" Anaconda last week. 95% with box, papers, dies, supplies, & holster for 6 Franklins.
SURE GLAD I didn't have to wait for a "NEED"!

Need? Probably not. But it would be nice to have one.
I'd like to have a 25-5 some day.

I don't think a .45 Colt could do any thing that you can't do with the calibers you already have. Most of the time when I set out to get a particular gun or caliber, I end up spending too much money. Then once I have something I generally find a better deal on it then I got. Why don't you save your money and wait until you see a gun you like, at what you consider a good price, and buy it? No matter what caliber it is. Of course if money is not an issue then you definitely need a .45 Colt and a revolver in .45 ACP. Then you will need a lever action rifle in .45 Colt. And a Thompson submachine gun in .45 ACP. Plus a whole bunch of other guns.

Boy does that sound familiar! Got the carbines to go with the 357 and 44 Mag.
The 625 would probably be the "wise" choice as I have the dies and bullets and brass. Just never see a used one around.
Might have to sell a gun

Sir, the .45 Colt offers little to no practical advantage over your present guns, especially for paper-punching. It's more or less equivalent to the .44 special. But you should still have one. Big bullet, plenty of penetration, little drama, very accurate in good guns, and still a viable game/defense load after nearly 140 years. What's not to like?
JMHO, FWIW.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

For collecting purposes, you could make a case that you need one.
For shooting purposes, no. You've already got calibers that will do everything a .45 will.

Bunch of enablers here. Like bringing a bottle to a AA meeting.
So 45 Colt or a 45 ACP wheel gun? Something about the big arse case of the 45 Colt is more intriguing to me.

Buy a Ruger SA revolver. Learn to reload for Ruger Only loadings. Then, look at your pitiful, wimperin' .429 Magnum ~
And ask it, if .... ~ you need a .45 Colt....

Well, you did get by without a .45 colt up untill now. Now it boils down to can you easily afford one. If you can and want one, why not?
Had the older guns been a little stronger in .45 colt, probley the .44 mag wouldnt have been invented.

Short answer to OP's question; no. You've certainly go enought guns/calibers already... Of course, you do want one, don't you...!
If so, I'm partial to the Model 25. Moon clip .45 ACP is actually a very convenient way of shooting a revolver, you should try it, and see for yourself.

No. Don't do it. I had several 44 magnums, and I thought I had the ultimate all around cartridge for handgun shooting and hunting. Then I picked up my first 45Colt. Then I learned that I was wrong about the 44 magnum. The 45 Colt is everything the 44 magnum is, plus much more. Now I have gotten rid of my 44 magnum's and switched over to all 45 Colt's. So unless you are ready to do that then I would stay away from the 45 Colt. Once you shoot one, and kill some deer with one, you will understand. Tom.

It's not a question of need..., it's a question of desire. I recently scratched my itch with the purchase of a minty S&W 25-5 in .45 Colt. Love it.

OCD1, my son ran across a nice, used #625-3 3" .45 a.c.p. last week in west Georgia, $650.00 IIRC, no box or papers.

There is no reason not to have one.
The .45 Colt is a great place to start into .45's in general. They are like eat'n the proverbial potato chip- and will lead you to .45 bliss and enlightenment.
Then, you can add guns in the following calibers, just to be a more rounded shooter:
.45 Schofield
.45 ACP
.45 Winchester Magnum
.454 Casull
.460 S&W Magnum
.455 Webley (.455 Eley, .455 Colt, .476 Eley)

When something needs a .45 caliber hole put in it a .45 Colt revolver is just the thing.
I don't even hot-rod my Colt New Service in .45 Colt but it is a dandy and practical handgun with factory equivalent handloads.

I think for most of us a .44 special or .45 Colt end up fulfilling pretty much the same mission, same goes for .41 magnum and the .44 magnum. I sold the last of my 25-5s when I was enjoying loading and shooting Ruger only loads in my Bisleys. The 25-5s were nice guns but I didn't use them and was concerned that the hot loads might end up in the wrong gun. But to answer your question, why yes!, of course you "need" one.

Well of course you need a 45 Colt. Here are two fine candidates to look for!
Both of these revolvers shoot better that I can.
625MG
25-7

I have a few .357's and some .44 mags that Ihave been shooting for over 40 years, but have never owned a .45 Colt. Never wanted to be loading for another caliber. Got one last month, a 25-7 in like new condition. It shoots great and is a lot of fun. Now I need to buy brass, bullets and dies!! Of course you "need" one. Get it before its too late.

They make bigger holes. Bigger holes are easier to see.
They make removing the offending target center more efficient.
Add to this the ability to lob a 260g+ chunk of lead and you've got penetration on a grand scale.
I think you need one.

I use a 625-2 with a 5" barrel all of the time... moon clips are really great for speedy reloads.

Dave,
You have entirely too many guns! You need to dispose of many of them so the rest of the Country has a chance.

Yes you need a 45 Colt revolver. Everyone should have at least one! There's just something right about a 45 caliber 255 LSWC at around 900 FPS.
Dave; That "pony" in your pic is sure putting on a show. Very nice engraving.

I have this with 45Colt and 45ACP cylinders.
I recently acquired a 25-5
I also have a Henry Big Boy in 45 Colt.
Henry Repeating Arms | Fine Rifles Made in America and Priced Right
I enjoy shooting all of them and they are all accurate and pleasant to shoot.

How could you not have at least revolver chambered in the classic 45Colt cartridge. With the popularity of cowboy action shooting, plenty of factory ammo is now available. If you handload, so much the better.........Not to mention the fact..........those big *** cartridges look intimidating. Here's a pic of my fav 45Colt revolver. This beauty will flat out shoot!
