Here's a carefuly composed shot. Note the juxtaposition of the brick and charcol lighter-offsetting the white terrycloth towel on which the gun sits-close to the gaping maw of the Weber. And one asks, is that yet another cast iron hibachi sitting atop the weber on which yon gun rests atop it's virginial white bed???
Some college professor (or a shrink for the criminally insane ) could write a book about the different sublimated layers of unrequited angst this picture delievers.

I think the inclusion of a knife in a gun photo gives it extra "color" and a nice reference point. For example, here are some of the tools of the trade for our OSS spy agency during WWII - a Colt Commando and an OSS stiletto. Just the things for coping with the Gestapo in occupied France!

First pic was actually just for the Challenge coin, threw the gun in for kicks.
So yes, it's a gratuitous gun pic.

All I can say is I submitted a photo of a lady with everything covered standing beside me while I was armed. The photo was made at a combination gun / car show in public with children present.

While I cannot say what happened to me here over that photo, I will say that I will not submit another photo uunless my preacher and two deacons are in the photo with five bibles.

Well, it is a good thing I did not post the photo I was thinking of showing. They would have likely shot me with a .380 that some are fond of. Even that one had every place covered, just smaller cloth.

;Not true. I have a Glock 18, the earlier non-compensated version, never a problem obviously; it is a post-'86 dealer sample.

Talking

I have no set opinion on the discussion other then some of the greatest images posted in the group are excellent images of the S&W revolver done by people who are excellent photographers. Thier intent in those pictures are to show the revolver at it's best and to make it the whole subject of the image. There are several really top notch photographers up here that do that really well.

On the other hand I also like the images of revolvers captured with knives, watches, speedloaders, ammo, flamethrowers and other items but I view them differently. These can be as equally well done as the ones I mentioned above but to me the revolver is not the subject anymore but part of whatever theme the person was trying to convey.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Exactly, as far as I am concerned, anyway.

My take is that this is a matter of one or two things. First, the article(s) you see may be part of the "daily life" of the owner and it may be satisfying to him to see the assemblage, rather than just the gun by himself. I have no problem with that.

Beyond that, inclusion of anything in the picture other than the gun itself moves the photograph into a different category. A photo of only a gun is a record shot, basically, no matter how artistic the setting. It's an image of a specimen. When things are added to the photo, the attempt is made to move beyond that. Whether or not the photographer is successful is up for... debate.

I once sat through an absolutely spell-binding presentation by a man named Gerhard Backker at the Winona School of Professional Photography. He was a fine arts sort of guy and dealt more with elements of composition than he did techniques of photography. His presentation's purpose was showing us the effect on the viewer one could achieve by skillfully adding and removing "props" from photos, and then explaining why this was or was not effective. Since this all dealt with fairly mundane things (usually food, clothing, and other various stills like you might see in advertising photos of the period), you would think a lecture like this would have been exceedingly dull. It was not. Gerhard is gone now. If have misspelled his name, it's an indication of my middle-aged senility, not a lack of esteem.

One of the great things about this forum is the photography. There are some really nice photos here and some very skilled photographers. Like Oldman45, I love to see the guns, but I enjoy the art, too - when it shows up.

Oldman45, the standard here in Indiana is "twenty bishops." (Don't ask me where it came from. Lawyers must have a curious imagination.)

Book not necessary as it can be dismissed virtually out of hand. The arrangement of the leaves in the yard of the background is particularly troubling and is meant to illustrate what was almost certainly the troubled youth of the photographer - and the resulting, latent asocial tendencies that are thinly masked by the artistic effort.

(Or something like that. )

The quoted post reinforces the previous comment about the vivid imagination of many individuals involved in a certain trade.

A extra subject like a knive or even a period botle, or whatever could give an extra accent to the revolver or other firearm.
I do have a very good friend who make such kind of pics very and I mean very good.

Since you brought it up, I’ll say what happened. You received a reminder about the rules and your post was deleted. That type of photo tends to generate even more risqué photos, so the rules concerning them are very straightforward:
Quote:
Do NOT post "girly" pics here or use them for avatars.

Your idea of including the preacher and deacons is fine, just make sure they’re wearing more than a slingshot and a set of lens covers.

Art,
You are far too modest. Your photos are clearly the best of any posted on this forum and your photo album with still life, landscapes, portraits, sun rises and sun sets represents outstanding talent and work.

This photo raises one question. Why do you want to BBQ that fine revolver?

I suppose so. I really like that knife, but you need some kind of an excuse (supplied) for a target trigger on a great gun with fixed sights. Can't really understand why someone would mess up a perfectly good picture of a knife with a gun.

Or sometimes you collect various stuff laying close by to make the photo look busier. And use a too short focal length to have a rubbery looking barrel on the gun.

How about with homemade apple pie?

Nothin's more American than Smith & Wesson and apple pie.

So, that's what causes the bendy looking barrel. I am one of the photo deficient ones.

OK I don’t care if you put in knives, bullets, computers, or even cats but, stop putting food in the photos!

The bacon was bad enough but then apple pie! I’ll gain 5 pounds just looking at them.

Why are you so grumpy?
Some guys like to try to compose a picture.
Cheer up, it's almost Xmas. Maybe you'll get a watch you're proud of!!

This is the best thread since the "What gun did Elmer Fudd Carry?" thread!

BTW, I love artistic gun photos. Ichiro was the best!
