Suppose you have the ability to have the perfect gun. What would that gun be like?

For me it would be:
1911 in stainless with a 5" barrel
.45ACP
Chip McCormick Extended beavertail.
4 pound trigger with square trigger guard
external extractor
wood grips at 30 lines per inch.
adjustable rear sight w/ blade front sight.
10 round stainless magazine
ambi safety
NO rails
All rounded edges.

I would have to say it would be the M1 Garand. As issued it can be used as a target rifle, hunting rifle (for anything in this country). It can be used as a home defense weapon (though a bit heavy).

Accurate, I even used mine in 1000 yard matches with its iron sights.


It's reasonably priced (through CMP) and there is cheap ammo available at the same place, easy to reload, ammo found anywhere in the world, from Wally World to mom 'n pops across the country.

aint no such thing as a perfect gun ... if there were we wouldn't have any cause to build our respective collections ... I wont be having any of this "perfect" nonsense now simmer down before our wives get misconceptions

the 1911 platform is the start of a "not quite perfect" gun. I can do without the ambi safety.
I'd like a little more pad on the trigger than what mine has. and a little bit of extension on the slide release. but ill be needing the grips checkers at 27.35 lines per inch and Im making due with 45 till they bore one for 46 1/3.

I read an article years ago that said the perfect hunting rifle weighs 3 ounces when carried, 30 pounds when fired, kicks like a 22, is accurate like a 30/06 and hits like a 458.
I would probably nominate my Colt Trooper .357, there isn't anything I have had to change on it-the factory grips fit me fine. Accurate, rugger, reliable.

I would have to say a Browning Superposed Lightening - Midas Grade with a round knob, long tang, gold inlay of my Golden Retriever, 28" bbls. choked imp. cyl/mod. Of course it would come in a leather fitted luggage case with the fancy Shearling liner.

That would be a 12 ounce high capacity (at least 10 rounds) item that would fit in my pocket, shoot a caliber of 45 or larger at magnum velocities and recoil like a 32 S&W long and get MOA accuracy at 100 yards; made of materials that would never rust or corrode and a finish that would never show any wear . . . .

well, you asked what my perfect gun would be !

Otherwise, I guess I'll stick with the pre-lock 342 Ti or my 1911 . . . .

I perfect gun would be one that wasn't made by flawed humans, which is one of the things, I think that we like about them. Also, a perfect gun would be one that never runs out of ammo. If I could have a S&W N-frame action with a Dan Wesson type barrel system, also with interchangable cylinders, sounds pretty nice to me. Just as far as a plain old revolver, my 3 inch Model 13 is pretty sweet, and handles almost perfect.

model 53 in stainless (653?) built the same as when started, with all the same options, and NO LOCK. maybe in a 105/8 bbl too, with adj. front sights.

The most perfect gun I have yet encountered is the Dan Wesson Commander Classic Bobtail .45 pistol. Right out of the box it is astoundingly accurate, easy to shoot, ergonomically excellent, and simply handsome. The exact four pound trigger is perfect too.



I'm glad I have it and I'm keeping it forever!

My perfect gun is my Ed Brown 1911 Kobra:

Well the perfect gun would be a S&W 640 .38spl +P+
or a S&W 3" model 64 DAO RB, all is good
(both stoked with Federal Nyclad 125gr JHP .38s)

LOVE that Clark stippling on the front grip strapl I have that on my 45 and sometimes it's hard to make the pistol let go of my hand.

I just shot mine for the first time, and it is now the Cat's Meow. Mine came LNIB, 6", shoots very well. AlphaNumeric Ser#, with tight throats, long cylinder, and easy to shoot. I love Smiths in 45LC and 44spec. Big bullets @900-1000fps. Just right.

I think it was my LW Commander .45 with plain ivory stocks. Frame finally cracked, and the replacement frame never fed right--even after being worked over by a name pistolsmith.

I miss that gun.

It's already been made. S&W 4506.

Every one has the "perfect " gun. To me, 2 come to mind: S&W M696 and M66 2.5"

Well, my 60-9 3" heavy barrel .357 coms pretty close but then there's my 63-5 3" .22 and my 650 3" .22 mag.was pretty good too... I'd have to put them in that order.

Probably my perfect gun would be my 5 inch 629 DX. Covers anything id need to do with a gun.

Mine would be a pre-lock 4" barreled Model 25 in .45 Colt, fully factory engraved, with a nice set of extra fancy Herrett Jordan Troopers. No wooden case needed just a nice frontier floral carved Austin holster from El Paso Saddlery.

For me, at this time, it would be a stainless steel, K Frame, round butt, 2.5 or 3-inch barrel chambered for the .327 Federal Magnum.

i haven't found one yet. Every time I think I have, there is something else that I have to have.
I do like my S&W K frames, 1911s, Remington 700s, and Mossberg 500.
