.22 suggestions
So, I was digging through the ammo box the other day and found 4 bricks of .22 Super Colibri (nearly silent). With that discovery, I'm cobbling together a small impromptu range in my garage and am looking for suggestions (well, more like excuses) for a .22 or maybe I should say, "another .22" If its gonna be a pistol, I'd like the barrel to be at least 10" (further noise redux). A neat little single shot would be fine in either a pistol or rifle. I've tried these in a tube fed lever and they work fine, as well as in a mag fed bolt action.
With that, bring on the suggestions.

My son got a GSG5 for Christmas 2009. That is the most fun we have had in a long time. It is very accurate as well.

I apologize for my ignorance, but what is a GSG5?

Don't they recommend a short barrell for the Colibri's?

They do, but I've never had one stick in a rifle length barrel. I have an 18" Bullberry Contender barrel that they are pretty much silent out of.
They are real neat out of a NAA mini. Maybe that's an excuse to get the NAA Earl single action army look alike. I've got the Black Widow now.

I have a TC Contender with a 10" tapered bull barrel and open sights. Fantastic handgun. If you shop around you should be able to get into one for less than or right around $450 for a used one. I really like the 10" in a Contender. It is about the same size and weight of my 6"--617. But considerably more accurate. Yet handles very well. A fantastic squirrel gun also with those Colibri's. I recently purchased a Remington Rolling Block #4 in .22 Short - Long - Long Rifle. The one I have is the take down model with the tapered screw. Works great. I also have a Winchester model 250, tube feed .22 S-L-LR lever action.
For an inexpensive revolver, check out the Taurus Tracker Model 990 with 7 1/2" barrel, 9 shot cylinder, stainless steel finish.
For a semi auto, take a look at the GSG-1911. It's a .22 LR that looks and feels like a Colt 1911. The barrel is fixed to the frame and it uses polymer magazines.

I have used the Super Colibri's in a Henry .22 lever action, S&W 22A semi auto pistol, and a couple of .22 revolvers: a Model 63 and a K-.22. It seems that there is enough pressure to slightly deform/bow out some aspect of the case (the base, I think) that results in them letting the extractor of the Henry and 22A slip off and leave the fired case in the chamber. I suppose a regular .22 cartridge does the same thing, but the increased pressure "squares" everything back up. With the Henry, they will do it every now and then; with the 22A it is almost every shot, which is annoying since I wanted them to use particularly in that gun even though the action had to be cycled by hand. A bolt action would probably be better. They are never a problem in either of the revolvers. It is surprising how accurate they are, although I use them mostly for plinking. Out of a rifle they will kill a squirrel, so I put them in the same class as a pellet gun. I got 578 fps with them from the 6" K-.22.

We use the Colibri's on backpacking trips in my Ruger Bearcat and the kids' Chipmonk rifle. We can plink into the lake without bothering "neighbors" on the other side of the ridge.
In a basement? Handgun might be too noisy for comfort but they make earplugs for that. Any revolver will be a blast.

This AAC Badlander is a integral suppressed Ruger MkIII. I've had more fun with this .22 than any other one I've owned. With subsonic ammo, I can sit in my man cave and shoot into phone books and the wife in the next room doesn't even know it. The only thing you hear is the bolt cycling. I like shooting grasshoppers with it.

T/C Contender is a great choice for superb accuracy and versatility for other uses.
For a compact bolt rifle, the little Marlin 915Y or YS (or older 15YN) single shot with it's 16 1/4" barrel is an accurate, inexpensive choice.

I got a 63-5 for Christmas and fired a few Super Colibri in the basement. I was wearing hearing protection, so I didn't hear much of anything, but wife, who was in the kitchen directly above me, said the bullets hitting the steel bullet trap, which was on the other side of the house, made more noise than firing the 63 did.
The primer only stuff is a lot quieter than CB shorts, or at least the cats didn't end up on the ceiling hanging by their claws like they do when I shoot CB shorts in the basement range.
Word of caution: They put out a little smoke, which most likely contains some toxic compounds, so be sure you use them in a well ventilated area.

For maximum quietness, the longer the barrel the better. I've shot the Kolibri rounds indoors with these two guns.
The first is a Model 69A Winchester bolt action. About the only sounds you hear are that of the firing pin hitting the rim of the cartridge and that of the bullet striking the target. This baby has a 25-inch barrel, and I think the bullet is probably sucking at the muzzle, moving only on momentum.
The second, a handgun, is a bit louder, but still fairly quiet. It's a 10-inch Ruger Mark II.

T/C Contender is my choice too (I LOVE mine).
You can shoot targets in your garage in the morning and use the very same gun to quickly dispatch that pesky grizzly bear in the afternoon.

I use a Stevens Favorite (the new model 30G) with about a20" barrel. Works great and is almost silent with the Super Colibri.
