Default Value of a Python

This is the closest I could find to be the "right" place for this question. Sorry if their is a better place.
The local gun shop has a 4 inch python on the shelf. I know these are usually pretty high priced, but I thought this might be a decent price.
It has original grips. They are in very good shape. The blueing is about 95% It has a little blueing loss in the barrel from a holster. About 1/8 inch.
The asking price is $975.00. I thought about offering $900.00 out the door and if they don't take it I would walk. What are your thoughts? I am a S&W guy so I don't know much about Colts, but I do like Pythons.
Thanks

Default You may want...

...to try the Colt Forum. As to the price of the Pythons, the $975 price sounds very reasonable, since Pythons are going from $1,100 northward at most places. Of course, a lot depends on the condition, stocks, box, etc. But don't be surprised if you "walk", if you're only willing to pay $900.

Dick, if the gunshop has a 2.5" barreled Python with holster, you should jump on it at $950. Short-barreled Pythons bring a premium, and unless it's beat to death, it's well worth that price.

$950 for a 4 inch as described is a fair price. With the Pythons, the shorter the barrel, the higher the premium for them.
Another think to consider is a serial number check to see what year it was made. Again, the older it is, the better the quality and higher the desirability factor.

I saw one last month with some holster wear for $450. Price depends a lot on local conditions.

No, I didn't buy it.

I bought this nickeled 4" Python new in the box in 1982 for $420; the revolver was made in 1981. I've only test shot it once. Together with the original box and papers, I value it today at about $1400 for insurance purposes. About 3 years ago, I saw similar guns in like condition and with the box and papers going for around $1250. Just as a side note, the nickeled Pythons are rarer; Colt quit making the nickeled versions well before the Python was eventually discontinued.

Is it still there? I couldn't have left the store without it for that price. Heck, I'd jump on a nice Diamondback for $450 these days.
I found a near new 6" royal blue Python a few months ago at a local hardware store for $699. Almost hurt myself getting my wallet out.

If you're looking for a Python, $975 for a 4" isn't a killer deal but it's better than average.

Cool

as described i think that asking price is fair. if you can get it for less naturally it would be better yet.

I have a 2 1/2" nickle and a 4" blue. Unless its beat up and out of time or something, it`s worth the asking price.

There is a large crowd that if they knew about it, they would storm the store for that gun at that price.

That's about the going rate. The last big gun show I was at , I didn't see a Python in 95% or better , with box & papers , for under $1500. Naturally , the older (55-60s) non-letter prefix guns bring a premium

I'd agree. I've quit looking for Pythons due to the current prices, but they are a treat to own. I have a 1963 3 inch version, used but not abused, I picked up around '94 for $450.

In my neighborhood, a decent Python for under a grand is considered a cheap price. I recently saw a 4" .22 Diamondback in good condition go for $1,100. We just don't see these come up for sale very often.

The 3" Combat Python is the Holy Grail. Let me know if it ever needs a home. It is the only blued Python that I don't have. I care not for stainless or the over-rated "Elite" models. I also don't buy post strike Colt revolvers for any price. Pre 1980 is best.

Like I noted, I bought it in '94...and it would probably be one of the last I'd ever let go. I haven't seen many for sale or in pics, and mine is the only one I've seen in the flesh.

I have no 6 or 8 inch ones (never even thought of buying an 8 inch), but as I say prices on any Python these days pretty much keeps me from taking any seriously as a potential "next buy."

But keep searching for a 3 incher, one will surface when you least expect.

Thanks guys,
I think a Python would be a fine revolver. But I am not really into Colts. I would rather have a really nice S&W. Thats why I would offer $900.00 then not loose any sleep over not getting it. That $900 would go a long way twords a better fit to my accumulation.

Thanks again guys

I have a Royal Blue 4" Python Elite. Smoothest DA trigger of anything I own. I bought the Elite because I could not find a Python. I can't remember the last time I saw one at a gun show or in a gun shop. The Elite (mine anyway) has a very sharp edge left along the groove for the rod, and the blue isn't what a Royal Blue would have been a couple of decades ago. But the gun shoots very well, and I'm happy I have it.

However, it would go before my Performance Center L-Comp did. And would also be sold before the Ruger Royal Phoenix GP-100 Python lookalike. The L-Comp is a great gun also, near the same value as the Python, and the GP-100 is possibly the toughest .357 built.
