Default H&R Handi Rifle .... A higher quality gun?

Would anyone here think that a 1881 style H&R could approach the quality of a modern Sharp's or even a Pedersoli ?

Depends on how your using the word "quality".

If you mean reliability and accuracy I say. Yes.

If you mean looks and polish, I'd say, No.

Personally having owned Sharps copies, H&Rs, Marlins and original Remingtons in 45-75 my first choice is the Remington.

Thanks,

Until today, I'd agreed with everything you have said. I never knew about the H&R spinoff LLC ....I bought SN 2000 today. I'm amazed.....at the quality.

I knew a guy who used to compete with a .38-55 version against the big Sharps replicas and he did very well with it. I have run across a couple in .45-70 and they seem to be built pretty well. If it shoots like any of the other H & R's than it should do pretty well. I would see if the barrel needs to be free floated as most do. Once that's done, they shoot like a dream.

The handi-rifles look OK, I thought of getting one in 7.62x39 and .223 just to use as range poppers.....they're cheap, like $150-200, which is a steal these days for a NIB centerfire rifle.

The rate of fire is probably about the same as a Trapdoor, or single barrel shotgun........the H&R's make good budget hunting rifles or truck guns.

I found one of the 1881 models made by the new H&R spinoff LLC.. Ir is in 38-55 and has a burl black walnut stock that is thinned out. Snable fore end, crescent butt that is color case hardened to match the receiver, cut checking, and Creedmore sights. It is best described as a carbine match gun.
