Default Ruger .308 bolt action "Scout" rifle...

Check this rifle out, a Ruger "Scout" rifle:

Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle Models

Wonder how it shoots? Does it use M1A magazines? With a 16.5" barrel I bet it is loud like you read about!

I have a Leupold long eye relief "Scout" scope sittting around unused, it may have found a home. I've got some research to do....

I have one. I have not yet shot it due to a recent 2 ft snowfall, but I can tell you"it handles and feels good". I have had a couple of custom scouts built over the years and am super pleased with Ruger's latest offering. The magazines are Accuracy International 10 shot and will soon be in the Ruger"pipeline" for buying extra's. I must also say I prefer the laminated wood stock and quite frankly that is a surprise to myself. All my best, Joe.

I handled one at a LGS, very nice. It's lightweight and points like my 10/22 & PC9, very natural. I'll be picking one up in the near future. If you google it you'll find a number of reviews from when they debuted it at Gunsite.

I've handled one, but not fired it. I give Ruger a lot of credit for coming out with this rifle. The price is right too. If you've already got a Scout Scope from Leupold (the best Scout Scope there is!), then I think you've got to buy the new Ruger by default.

I love the Scout Scope concept. I have one on a 16" barreled custom Marlin lever action and it's the schizzle for wild boar hunting.

Here's another thread on the Ruger:

If they ever make one of these in Stainless-I'll buy one in a heartbeat.

My "Scout" is close to 50 years old. Remington 600 (.35 Rem) with a Leupold 2X in Leupold Detacho mounts. The plastic parts have been replaced with steel.

If you intend to use a Scout for hunting, be advised that LER scopes don't excel in low light. A good conventional scope is much better at dawn and dusk.

IIRC, the first scout rifle Jeff Cooper experimented with was based on a Remington 600.
