Default The Funnest .22 Rifle Ever! What took Me So Long?!!

What took me so long to get one of these?! I just went and picked it up and on the way home tried it out off hand at various little twigs floating in this muddy irrigation ditch out to about 35 yards. I just couldn't miss! And that solid short stroke "chunk-ka-chunk!" pump action is fast. The trigger pull is perfect and goes off like the proverbial piece of broken glass. I was sure late to this party! It's a take-down Rossi Gallery .22 I just picked up for $200. I know lots of you folks have one of these, too. Or grew up with a Winchester pump .22. Wow, I love this little gun!

Welcome to the club. After shooting my Dads I went and bought me a Winchester 62a.
Mines a 1949 and is a little beat up but it shoots great and for 300 out the door I'm happy.
Dad's is a '37 and maybe I'll get it one day.My brother doesn't seem to like it.I haven't talked about it to my sister. She likes guns too but I think she won't go after it either.
It's a keeper to me and is one of his last guns that we shot together.I can't see anymore range time with Dad in our future.

Thanks for sharing.Nice score BTW,sorry for the off subject memories.

Your memories are warmly appreciated. I know these classic pumps, Winchesters I mean, were probably the first guns for many hard core shooters now. When I shot the 14or 15 round out of my Rossi today I imagined couples on the crowded Santa Cruz boardwalk or Coney Island in the 1940's, eating cotton candy and carrying stuffed animals then stopping to pop off some .22 shorts at the outdoor shooting gallery. Other guns in this catagory are the Remington pump .22's, the Savage Visable Loader, etc.

They are certainly fun little guns to shoot.

I bought this one for my oldest son when he was about 5 years old . . . he graduated college last year. This one is a Rossi 62 carbine and my youngest son, now 14, still squirrel hunts with it.

Hey Wyatt I have the Remington model 12 (3 of them actually!) and I love 'em! A buddy of mine has the Rossi in .22 Mag and swears by it, I'm gonna have to ask him to let me have a run with it one day.
And my favorite of the bunch is a smoothbore version, it really keeps the vermin out of my garden!
Nice rifle by the way! Dale

My buddy showed me a smoothbore pump .22 a long time ago that was his dad's. I think it was a Winchester. How close do you have to be for your smoothbore to be effective? It sounds like a great gun for the uses you put it to.

Nothing like a good John Browning design to make one's day brighter. You did yourself proud to pick that one up for such a good deal. Lots of shooting fun there.

My favorite .22 rifle out of the ones I have is this Winchester Model 1890 chambered for .22 Long Rifle. Shown being fired by our youngest son. The empty case just ejected may be seen at the top edge of his cap.

I absolutely love my Winchester 62A and my model 06 pump. They shoot all .22 ammo with no fuss. Can't imagine more fun for less money in ammo. The cheap fun makes it worth purchasing the gun. Great thread.

I have one of the Rossi 22 Mag versions and we all have a blast with it. I've been keeping my eyes open for a 22LR version simply due to ammo cost.

isnt it amazing...we spend so much time doing research for a gunsmith to build a dead eye tack driving rifle...write a big check for the build and while the gun may perform at or above expectations...something as simple as a gallery gun or a 10-22 can bring so much enjoyment due to the simplicity border lining on the zen of shooting, that when we reflect on a fun afternoon of shooting, the basic gun always comes to mind first.

I have a classic Marlin 39 Mountie but I must say, for me, the gallery pumps are more fun to shoot...

If I could only have one rifle, it would be a good .22 rimfire. One of life's best simple pleasures is plinking and hunting with a .22 rifle. I have a fine little Remington Model 121 pump rifle that I really enjoy using. Retro fun!

My brother has a Rossi Gallery 62SAC .22 with the short barrel, and I would have to agree it is one of the funnest .22's I have had the pleasure to shoot. Found it very accurate even with just the iron sights.

I had one of these in the late 80's.One of the neat things about it is you could just hold the trigger back & operate the pump and it would fire as fast as you moved that forearm. Can you still do this on new Rossis? What about the 62s?

I also have an old Remington Model 121. It never misses a beat with .22 S, L, or LR. That kind of perfect reliability is hard to find these days.

You can with the 62.I wouldn't and if I did I would make sure I counted my rounds. You don't want to dry fire them.

I've got a couple of them...I just wish I had gotten a .22WMR when it was available. Oh well...

The only complaint I have with them is...in my opinion (and it's just that ) the stock iron sights leave a lot to be desired. I had that fixed on my octagon barreled Rossi- I had the sights changed to a gold bead front and a Marbles flattop rear- which vastly improved the accuracy, at least for me.

The one problem he told me was, that the Rossi dovetails are not a standard 3/8" and he had to some 'smithing to make them work since the dovetail from the factory is a bit deeper.

There's nothing quite like a .22 pump! Fast and accurate. I have one you don't see very often. A Marlin Model 37. Functions just like the Winchester and is very accurate. Sure don't see them often. Actually, I've never seen another before I bought this one at a gun show and haven't seen one since.

I owned two of the old winchester 62`s. When my daughter was 8 I bought her one of those rossi`s like yours for her first gun. I still own a 61 winchester pump octogon barrel that my dad bought in the late 1930s and I have a 1890 winchester that was in 22 wrf. Since someone had already done some stock work on it before me I had it rechamberd to 22 wmrf. I was raised on those pumps and they still feel the most natural to me.

sipwicz said he liked pumps better than his lever mountie. I totaly agree. I have had at least 4 22 levers. A 39A, 39 mountie, 62 levermatic marlins and a 9422 winchester. They all were slick but none were as fast and light as a winchester style pump. For a light .22 rifle you just dont need the more clumberson lever. I suppose there is a place for a super accurate bolt but for a slick, fast 22 you cant beat the pump. Maybe a 63 winchester, but you cant shoot shorts in those autos.

Yeah I'm jealous...as usual you guys have all the cool stuff I'm looking for.
I seldom come across a pump, lever or semi .22 that says "take me home". They are either beat beyond recognition or apparently have gold-lined barrels and are price well beyond reality.

I have a Colt Lightning in .22 Long that I acquired from a forum member.
I can't afford to shoot the darn thing.

Got the same rifle... GREAT FUN!!! Good catch.. ENJOY

I have a couple of pumps, Remington 121 and a 572.
The old 121 is a beater, but then again it was made in 1950 and still shoots like a dream.

Have had several Mod. 90's & 06's but now down to a Mod.61. Got it at a gun show about 20 years ago. Traded a Mod. 97 12 Ga. in rough shape & 40 bucks for it. Nice tack driver for sure.

I issue one cosmic, sweeping, general-purpose LIKE to this thread and every gun in it.

I remember the shooting gallery at Disneyland in 1956 where I actually got to plink away with a pump .22 at the little moving outlines at the back of the booth. I think I actually hit a couple with the 10 shots I bought. The pump .22 made by anybody is just a first rate boy's rifle -- and adult's rifle too, if the adult has any boy left in him.

Got this Winchester a couple of years ago. Makes me feel younger just having it in the house.

My model 61 has started to replace my 15-22. I mean the 15-22 is fun, but the model 61 is one that not everyone has at the range.

It makes a great little squirrel gun and one hell of a snake shooter. And this thing with some subsonics or some CB caps is just as quiet as a mouse.

I have most of the early 22 pumps, the falling block, the rolling block and the center break rifles. I have a Hopkins & Allen 1894 single shot which is my oldest so far. My pride of the fleet is the 1890 Winchester pump and my remington 1906 pump. I have the Stevens and savage pumps too.
I also have a husqvarna bolt action single shot with an octagon barrel.

I shot my granddad pump as a kid and always wanted one. When the new
grandson was born I wanted to leave him some toys incase I pass on.

I got into the s&w, the colt and the h&r 22 revolvers too. My oldest revolver so far is a 1895 h&r premier in nickel finish of course.

Did you know a 22 long rifle has the killing power out to 450yds. Go see it on you tube

Warning collecting these old pump or single shot 22 rifles and
revolvers can be habit forming, but lots of fun too.

Several generations of my family learned on my (now) 1890 Winchester. I attribute my shooting ability to being schooled on that gun. I had it re-barreled, re-conditioned, as far as mechanically, and chambered for LR's in the early 70's. It is incredibly accurate, and still quiet as well.
