S&W SW1911 9mm Pro Series is the best IMO. I carry one on duty and shoot it in IDPA, it's a helluva piece, fast and accurate.

if you're looking to buy a brand new and if you meant springfield i'd say that all of them have something good to offer and my advice would be buy the one that appeals to you the most. if you are also considering 2nd hand colt should enter into the equation although older colt 9mm 1911s don't have the user friendly features of the newer guns you mentioned.

My thought is to avoid brand new and go with used. I say this because guys will spend a thou and at times be unhappy with failures to feed. Some guns take time to get the kinks out, or need to be sent back to the factory for rework, etc.

Try to find one that you can get some history on, by which I mean the previous owner has or had no complaints, etc.

Or, go a little higher, and look for a used Wilson, Baer, or Brown...

Check out the 1911 sites below and read up.

My "motto" if you have to buy new then go with whoever has the best no hassle customer service. With that I would say SW (not just because of this forum) but it is outstanding and Springfield.

If you should have a problem you do not want to have to spend the outrageous shipping to the company, Both SW an SA will send you a shipping label and get your forearm working whatever it takes.

I am very happy with my 45 ACP SW 1911 and for the price I do not think it can be beat. There are plenty of more expensive ones and supposedly "better" but i do not think they are $500 to $1000 better. Maybe for the real pro competitor.

My S&W 9mm 1911 Pro has had zero feeding, extracting, or ejecting issues. It has run 100% out of the box. I don't think that a Wilson, Baer, or Brown will work any better than that and I paid just over $1000 for my gun, brand new. You won't get that from any of your big three.

My gun has had one functional issue, some play in the ambi safety that twice kept the safety from releasing completely when the right side lever was used. The gun was returned to S&W on Monday, they replaced the safety and checked the gun over completely, and I had it back in my hands on Friday of the same week. And they paid for shipping both ways.

I don't own a S&W 1911, but I like the looks, and I have handled one of the Pro models. Seems like a nice gun.

I do own a Springfield EMP 9mm. It is a little above your price range at maybe $1100 to $1200. Mine is new, but through the first 150 rounds has been very good, accuracy is exceptional. The only problems I've had with function have been related to firing left-handed. My right hand grip was a little too far forward and I found I was pressing in on the slide stop pin and causing malfs. Correcting my grip solved the problem.

I'd also recommend looking at the STI lineup. Solid guns.

I don't have any experience with a Kimber 9mm. My Kimbers are also older .45's before the "II" models came out, and have been flawless.

My "1911", is an S&W 4506. I am quite happy with it and it only cost 300.

I'm sure to be blasted for this but the Taurus 1911's come in 9mm and are priced decent for what you get. they are foreign owned and that is a big deal to me but I like to think their pricing helps keep our down some in competition. That being said, the STI guns are very nice for the price.

Heck, if you come here to Utah you might be able to get a Browning at a discount since it's now our state gun. Or maybe that legislation didn't pass?

I purchased a used Springfield Stainless loaded target model in 9mm. I wanted one with the adjustable sights as it was to be a target gun.

Had various failure to feeds and some accuracy issues. Went back to the factory twice over the one and half year period that I had time to ring it out. Ended up replacing the barrel, bushing, slide, and doing a trigger job on it.

It seems to work ok now, but the accuracy is only 2" at 25 yards (from a rest) which is all they (springfield) will guarantee. Maybe I'm off base but it sure seems like an expensive target gun like this should have better accuracy. I have an old series one Kimber 45 with combat sights that is more accurate than the Springfield, in my hands at least.

Yes, they do make one in 9mm. In fact, I spoke of my S&W 1911 9mm Pro Series in posts 2 & 6 of this thread.

I have a used 9mm Colt Combat Commander that has been a good gun.
Some of them are still around although prices are higher than when I bought mine.

I snoot a series 70 colt govt. model. Bought it used about four months ago for $600. Got five mags in the deal. Really like it.

In the $1000 range, check out the STI Trojan. For $600, the STI Spartan.
