Default Ruger SR-556 with .50 Beowulf "Upper"

My best friend bought a Ruger SR-556 and set it up nicely with a Burris P.E.P.R. scope mount, Burris Tactical 3-9x40 scope, and a Burris FastFire red dot. He also has a Magpul stock and pistol grip along with a Streamlight TLR-3 Light/Laser.

Today he showed me his Alexander Arms "upper" in .50 Beowulf that he just purchased. It has Troy battle sights and a quad rail along with the most serious looking compensator/muzzle break I've ever seen.

The .50 caliber rounds fit right in standard .223 magazines, but obviously they single stack instead of double. Ten rounds of .50 Beowulf fit in a standard 30 round AR-15 magazine.

I can't wait to shoot this thing with him - hopefully this Friday!

My guess is that such a rifle and cartridge would greatly increase target penetration and incapacitation up close but still leave us with problems at 200, 300 yards and further.

Jeff Cooper proposed such a carbine, shooting a large diameter, heavy bullet fired in a short handy weapon. He proposed to call the weapon "Thumper."

Keep us posted on how the gun and ammunition combinations works out. I think it will fill a real need!

yep, this thing is supposed to be a beast inside of 200 yards though. I would love the opportunity to get my hands on one as well. Tell your friend congratulations and have fun with it.

I've shot one and found it to be less recoil than a 12 gauge with slugs. It was accurate for me at 100 yards, plus you could see the holes at that distance too!

One day I'd like to get a Beowolf upper and a set of dies (so I can afford to shoot it). The factory ammo is sometimes hard to get as they don't make regular runs or so it seems. Goota admit, that 1/2 inch hole in the muzzle is pretty impressive. I seem to have heard that some military units may be utilizing the Beowolf in the Sandbox, but haven't heard how well it is performing.
