Looking for a decent derringer
I was thinking about buying a decent over under stlye derringer. I want to keep it with a caliber that I already have, so I am considering a .38 Special. I would prefer that to one of those North American Arms revolvers, although I do think their new breakopen .22 Magnum isn't all that bad. Still, I prefer a .38 Derringer to a .22 Magnum.

David,
As far as I know there are only two good brands of derringers: the one above and the American Derringer. The American is smaller than the Bond.
Be warned; derringers are very unpopular amoungst the key board commandos.

I have 2 American Derringers, one in 45 colt/410 and the other is 357 mag. The 357 isn't to bad to shoot with 38's.

I'm no keyboard commando, but I don't get the whole 2 shot re-cock thing unless they are very small and light....at 14 ounces, why not just carry an airweight?

American Derringer makes a double action .38 Derringer that's nice. It's called DA38.

Hi:
The only Derringer I liked is the High Standard in .22 Magnum.

the bond is the way to go, they are heavy but if you plan to shoot it alot it will hold up! i have the 38/357 and its a ball to shoot with 38s, with hot 357 magnums its pretty ruff, but still controlable, i cary 357 145 silver tips in mine, and after playing with i can hit pretty good with it, and it will shoot 38 snake shot realy good!

I'm in agreement with Sip on this one. Given the size and weight of the derringers mentioned, I'd rather carry my Seecamp DAO in .32ACP; or an Airweight J-frame.
Regards,
Dave

Those who carry the big bore derringers in place of small bore pistols do so for just that reason: big bores.
My American is chambered in .45 ACP/Auto Rim. I would rather have only two of those than five or eight little ones. They are quite strong, they chamber them in .44 mag, so I'm comfortable with a 265 grain Keith at +900 fps outa mine.
Of course David's question is about a .38 special, so you got me. Although the American is quite a bit shorter than even the Seecamp, let alone a J.
I'm sure you both realize all this allready. Are you sure you're not key-board commandos?

I still can't see carrying one unless I play cards for a living.

I carry a Bond Arms derringer in a driving holster (cross draw) chambered in 45 LC. This is not my primary weapon but a back up. The LC rounds are a LOT better than the 410 shot shells or 410 triple OOO buck shot.

I don't much care for "Derringers". Too big and heavy for just 2 shots. If however you really want one . I see only one worth haveing. "Bond arms" is the Rolls Royce of "Derringers."

What you need is a Remington O/U .41 RF. A friend had one AND a good supply of ammo. We would shoot it at a 2"X12" oak plank at 7 yds. Hit it every time. No worries about a back stop. Board would stop'em dead. Had a report like popping a paper bag. Sure was pretty.

I'd consider these for ease of operation. Derringers don't seem practical anymore. If you just want to "have" one that's understandable.

If Derringers become popular, someone will use one is a crime spree and then law makers will reduce their capacity to one shot...making them even less desirable to keyboard commandos...

They won't catch on around here. You'd need 27 derringers to do a decent drive by.
