C96 Mauser
I have a 9mm C96 Broomhandle. It is a Federal Ordinance reworked piece. The pistol is pretty much unfired (too hard to load without the strippers) and 95% + finish.
How much would a gun like this be worth?
Thanks Mike

I have seen them as low as $600 for so so shot ones to $1000 for exceptional ones taht are all matching.
Are you selling? If so I have a C96 itch that some day will have to be scratched.

Just wondering what these things are worth. I did a walk about at the Lakeland Collector's gun show Saturday to see for myself. I saw nothing under a grand. Pretty nasty looking condition for the cheapest at $999?
I know my rework has no collector value, but then I'd not be doing harm firing it from time to time. Just a novelty?
Thanks for the reply I was beginning to feel neglected.

Take an old toothbrush handle and sand it down so it just slides into the clip guides. (The one I have just happened to fit without sanding) It will hold the bolt back while you load the rounds in to the magazine. Then just pull it out and start shooting.
However, don't use any of the currently available Russian Tork ammo. Too hot for the old Mausers. Also be sure to go over the bolt stop with a magnifying glass before each shooting session looking for any cracks. You don't want this part to fail.

Sorry.... That'll teach me to read more carefully..
Same advice, stay away from hot 9mm. (Like the surplus stuff originally intended for sub-machine guns.)

9mm
The Hirtenberg(sp?) stuff cracked the frame of my Wather P88. That's what I get for trying stuff I haven't researched fully.

My observation is based on the refinish. Around here, once it is refinished it price drops pretty rapidly. The problem I find is I go to a show, see a few refinished that I could buy and always find something I want more.
Like 38/44's or 38 Super Colts, or 357 Maximum's etc
Someday i will pick up a refinished C96 just for the fun of it.

C96 and the Novelty Factor
The youngsters at the pistol club all go to rat me out to the RSO when they see it. Range rule #2 NO TEC 9s. And everybody knows if the magazine is in front of the trigger it has to be one of those bulky assault pistols.

Mike,
PM me your address, and I will send you a few C96 stripper clips. I don't want you to have any excuse for not shooting that thing.
These won't be beautiful, but they will work.

I don't think you would hurt the value to should it once in a while. If you have never shot a Broomhandle you should. I take mine out every once in a while, just for the fun of it. Unless you really need the money you should keep it. They are only going to get more expensive.

They're kind of like a Luger,,you should have at least one.
I still shoot both of mine occasionally with some older Remington 30Mauser ammo that I got with one. Pretty whimpy stuff but that's OK, I don't need a magnum C96. Down to 3+ boxes though.
A friend did crack the locking lug area on the barrel extension of his using Tokarev ammo. He had it welded and he refitted it. Did a very nice job being a machinest and tool maker but has never fired it since.
I load w/o the stripper clips by pulling the bolt back with the index and middle fingers, and using the thumb to press against the hammer spur underneath to hold the bolt in the retracted position. It'll balance freely & easily in that position, open,,with just the use of those three fingers to do it.
Then with the left hand simply pinch the top of open bolt to the hammer with the index finger and thumb and you can hold the bolt open very easily. Now load the pistol with the right hand.
Once loaded, use that right hand to grasp the pistol by the grip and then release the bolt with the left hand and it'll run forward and load. Ready to go.
Stripper clips are quicker of course...and part of the whole experience too.

Shooting C96
I do take it to the range from time to time.
I have used a similar technic to load a few rounds. I wonder is there Mauser Thumb? Like there is Garand Thumb?
