Default Ruger 1911

This will be my next purchase. It looks like it will be the best 1911 for the money.

Just handled one about an hour ago. Seems well made overall. I like the two-tone look of the stainless gun and black furniture. The sights are great, grips looked and felt very nice as well. I seriously don't need another gun, let alone another 1911, but for the asking price of $729, I was fairly tempted.

The only downside I saw was some tooling marks on the trigger guard that should not have gotten out of the QA department, and the lawyer letter on the dustcover. Both correctable with judicious use of bead-blasting though. Nice gun.

From reading little bits and pieces about the Ruger 1911 it seems like something that would be worth owning, if I was looking for another 1911 (read; if I could afford the ammo to feed it). But as long as they continue defacing the slide like that I will write it off. Like I did the Remington 1911...when I read "series 80".

Do you mean the roll marks / Ruger logo, or the warnings?

BTW, it is my understanding that the SR1911 has a series 70 system.

The warnings...I haven't seen them myself on the Ruger 1911, but when I read The Highlander say they were there I lost any interest I did have in it.

Yes, I was aware that the Ruger is a series 70. What I meant was, when I found out the Remington R1 1911 was a series 80, that alone made me pass on the Remington.

ETA: I just found a pic of the warning text. I know Highlander said dustcover but my mind went straight to it being plastered on the side of the slide...sorry my mistake. It isn't really that obtrusive...it's a shame it's there but not a deal breaker like I thought.

The initial release information made a big deal out of the fact the "wallpaper" wasn't going to be on the 1911. Are they reneging on that?

I am a traditionalist. If I am going to own a 1911 (I have 3) it's going to be a Colt. Not saying that some of the other clones are not well made, just saying that IMHO the Colt is still every thing you want and noting you don't. My .02 cents.

I think that Colt has been left behind quality wise. I feal like my Para way outperforms the Colt. I like my Sig, Browning and even my Barette better than any Colt I have ever owned, but, to each his own.

If I owned only one 1911, it would be a Colt. It IS the 1911.

I'm not an autoloader guy, but I only have 1 1911 clone, and plus I'm a nut for anything Ruger.......if I ever get the urge the Ruger will be my next 1911. I'll give it a while for the bugs to get worked out. If I can stop buying wheelguns long enough to ever save the cash for the SR1911, that is.......I'll still have a hard time seeing the advantage of a 1911 over my moonclipped 4" GP100, other than adding another Ruger to my collection.

I almost bit on an SR9 as soon as they came out and then there were all kinds of recall issues.......glad I didn't go for it.

Just looked at what must be the first one in the state today. I was prepared to dislike the beavertail and skeletonized hammer and trigger, but the great feel of the gun in the hand made those easy to overlook. The flat MSH and extended safety shelf also felt good to me.

The trigger felt good, about 5 pounds without creep , and the sights were good with plenty of light on either side of the front sight. The gun felt solid, with a well fitted slide--smooth but no excess play at all. Not sure what the poundage is on the recoil spring but it was noticeably stiffer than the new Colt I compared it to.

The warning on the bottom of the dust cover is there but you have to look for it; if the light isn't good it's hard to see, let alone read. "Unobtrusive" is the word. All in all, a pretty nice gun IMHO.

One of the gunshop workers owns it, and it wasn't for sale. Otherwise it just might have come home with me.

Yep, the warning is on the bottom of the dustcover. Since the gun is stainless, I would think it could be bead-blasted off easily, just blend it in with the rest of the gun. I liked the sights (Novak's I believe) and the trigger pull wasn't bad at all either. Grips were nicely done double-diamond style.

I lied, to many MIM parts, I went with a Dan Wesson Vbob instead, it was good from the factory, not great, not flawless, so it is at AP&W being cleaned up. I'll post a report when I get it back.

Bummer. You spent $1400 more for a gun that shoots as good as the Ruger, then you're pouring more money into it.

My SR1911 outshoots my Kimber TLE II every time.

Your OP mentioned the Ruger as being the "Best 1911 for the money." So far I have seen nothing in the past year or so to indicate otherwise. I'm guessing the "for the money" thing went out the window?

The SR1911 is still at the top of my "want" list. Unfortunately they are STILL hard to get even in Free States. Living in Kalifornistan I will need to wait and jump through hoop$ to get one when the time comes. Fortunately there are more FFLs available these days to hold the hoops.

I've only handled two of the Ruger 1911s, one when they first came out, and another about a month ago. Frankly, I was not impressed with the fit of the barrel to slide, or slide to frame, both were far worse than the completely worn-out 1911A-1s the Army was issuing in the '70s. My LGS lets me open up any interesting gun, as the owner trusts me and my experience, and all the guys are interested in finding out more about the inner workings of the guns. I was not impressed with the quality and, especially, the fit/tolerances inside, either. My overall opinion - not a bad gun at its ORIGINAL price, but not a good value at the current price. There are many 1911s out there in a competitive price range which, in my opinion, are better made, including Springfield. I do like Rugers, and own several of their single actions, Mark I and Mark II .22 semi-autos, ans several Ruger rifles, but I feel their 1911 is just a bit off the mark for Ruger's usually better tolerances. YMMV.

Was on a long LGS wait list, bought at just over $700, MSRP now $799.

Good Ruger quality, tight, shoots WW Ranger T 230 gr +P JHP.

See;

Best.

I shot mine again today. Prior to today, I probably had 600 rounds through it. Today I shot my standard load of 5.0 of 231 and a 200gr cast swc. The gun was flawless with an assortment of magazines. The more I shoot it, the more I like it.
