ATF gets semi auto rifle reporting for SW
Funny how I had to read this on the BBC news. I guess it has been snuck in while the media are screaming about the budget. Now when a gunstore in TX, NM, AZ or CA sells more than two semi-auto rifles to an individual, they must report it to the ATF. The article states that this applies to anything above .22, I am guessing 22LR. Cannot expect the BBC to know the difference betweeen all those .22 calibers, can we.

Fox News has been talking about it all morning. Seems Congress is really hot over the program.

And meanwhile the ATF boondoggle will just get swept away.

I understand that the NRA will sue ATFE as soon as the first instructions are distributed to the dealers. The point is that the Obama administration has no legal authority to demand those records unilaterally. Current law is that they can examine records only as part of a valid criminal investigation, or when a dealer closes the doors and has to turn over his records. Anything else is a witch hunt and an invasion of privacy. As a gun owner and taxpayer in a border state, I would feel singled out simply because the federal government cannot or will not stop illegal aliens from streaming over our southern border.
And I also see that both the president and the attorney general were fully aware of Project Gunrunner, as was announced by an assistant AG back in 2009. This has been all over Fox news and the British press recently. It looks to me like this new reporting "requirement" is an obvious attempt to divert attention from this outrageous program, which apparently was approved at the highest levels in the executive branch.
To stop any weapons and/or drug trafficking, the border must be sealed shut. Anything else is a waste of time and posturing.

The sad thing is that any Mexican trying to buy a semi auto in the US is probably some rancher trying to defend the homestead. The drug dealers can get full auto AKs for 1/10 the price from South America or China. Unless things have changed drastically in the last 10 years.

Fast and Furious and the other similar programs by the Government will be swept under the carpets in the Lincoln Bedroom and the Oval Office in the White House.

If you read the 4473 you will see that if you buy 2 or more handguns the dealer has to fill out a form 3310.4. That's been around forever. I suspect that is what they are talking about.

And the BATFE will continue to INTENTIONALLY allow them to buy so as to "prove" the "need" for more oppressive gun controls.
It's the equivalent of the TSA ALLOWING a terrorist onto a plane with a bomb to "prove" the "need" for all of the intrusive search-raping.

Correct. But that requirement was passed into law by Congress, and although long gun reporting was discussed at the time, that idea was voted down. The President cannot enact law by executive order. He is not the law of the land. He has to report to the people, whose lawmaking authority is delegated to the legislative branch by the Constitution. Any 8th-grade student can tell you that. Such blatant attempted usurpation of authority is in my mind a criminal act.

Misread the original post-you're absolutely correct. Law is only for handguns. Thanks

An amendment moved out of a House committee this week prohibiting ATF from spending any funds on this program. Even if the House passes it, I doubt the Senate will, and the President will almost certainly veto it unless it's attached to some kind of increased spending measure.
