I have a couple of DWs, and more Colts than I'll admit. I've never seen a Ruger DA that I liked the look of.

Resisted buying anything but Smith's, and also resisting buying one with the lock.

I just did a quick revolver tally. I own 63 revolvers. 64 if you count the .357 mag Navy Arms revolving carbine.

23 Colts (4 SA, 19 DA)
15 S&W
9 Italian reproductions made by Uberti & Pietta. 5 are cap & ball, 3 cartridge, and that revolving carbine.
6 Rugers ( 3 SA, 3 DA)
3 Taurus
2 D-Max
1 Astra
1 Dan Wesson
1 Enfield
1 North American Arms
1 Rossi
1 R.J. Braverman

A few examples

To the Gent considering a Taurus 608-I am very fond of mine-I had the model 44 first-which you probably know is the same large frame as the 608. The 608 is one of the best out of the box revolvers I have experienced. I also have an as new model 441 44SPL-incdedible gun. In my view, Taurus revolvers need custom grips-they make the gun. And by the way, I recently sent in the 44 for service, and was pleasantly surprised at the difference from some other reports and experiences. They have an online form you fill out now, and the whole process is streamlined. I had the gun back in less than 2 weeks. Flapjack.

Yup, I have owned alot of the ones mentioned above, sold most of them off though cause they didn't mean much to me. Still have one Taurus in the house that my wife loves, one Ruger single six, and a very old top break nickle .45 a great uncle of mine came up with somewhere. No idea who made it, but it's well built, has a serial number of 26, and is quite a conversation piece. Oh, and a couple italian black powder revolvers as well.

S&W and Colt gets my attention and money. I do not look for other brands on the used market but somehow have wound up with a Charter Arms, a Davis, a Titan and a RG. They were given to me though.

I've had Ruger, Colt and Taurus revolvers. I've got rid of most of them as I like the S&W platform the best. I suppose I've been lucky as I've had three Taurus revolvers and all worked fine for me. Not S&W quality by any means but I do like the fact they function the same.
I do sometimes carry a Taurus .41 mag snubby when out in my woods. I trust it as I have fired enough rounds through it to know it works.

I'll probally stick to older S&Ws in future buys although if the price is right and it interests me I would concider other brands again.
As far as price I sometimes use layaway should I find a S&W that I can't quite afford right then. My dealers give me 90 days and I can save up the extra cash by then.

I think the question for me is would I buy a new revolver that IS made by S&W, with an internal lock, and the answer is definitely, NO. The older S&W's were not without problems, but the addition of the internal lock, different frame contour, etc, is a deal breaker for me. The only S&W's I consider now are the "no-locks". JMO, & my opinion only.

Made a new picture. This is defenitly not a Smith.
This is a 3th model Webley Fosbery in .455 It is one of my top pieces of my collection. He is made in 1906. There are better one's outthere. But I do own one and I am very happy with this revolver.

This is the revolver for the more practical job. The Colt Peacekeepers in .357 magnum. You can sent me in the jungle with this revolver.

I'd buy a non S&W SSA (type) revolver.
For DA/SA types though I know, like, and trust Smith & Wesson - So why look elsewhere?

This is just an old man's way of doing things. I have been shooting and buying guns for 56 years now, started when I was 12. I have "ALWAYS" bought the gun "I" wanted. This is the way I did it. If I wanted a certain gun and it cost $300.00, but I only had $125.00 at the time, I would put that money in a hiding place and not touch it. As time went by, I would keep adding a little money, whatever I could afford to the pot. Sooner or Later, most of the time it was LATER, I had enough money to BUY THE GUN "I" WANTED. I still operate under that system as I speak. I was told one time when I was young by a very good friend, " THAT WHATEVER IS WORTH HAVING, IS WORTH WAITING FOR".....CookE

Keep saving, do some horse trading, mow a few lawns, sell a few long guns and get what you REALLY want. I'd rather have a few excellent choices than many second choices.

An acquaintance asked me, "Why do you have so many guns? You can only shoot one at a time."
I told her, "How many rings do you own? You can wear as many as you want. I can take as many guns to the range as I want."

No, when it comes to Revolvers I will stick with S&W, Ruger and Colt. I am also to the point I will only look at well taken care of older used models. Quality control with companies today is lacking.

I have several Dan Wessons as well as smiths, and while I don't own a taurus, a shooting partner has a 22 cal, that has taken many of thousands of rounds with no issues. I think it all boils down to personal choice and planed ussage.

Believe me, I have thought seriously about this very thing for a long time. I looked at Charter Arms and the quality was about 50/50 from the people I spoke to. When I worked at Shooter's Taurus and Rossi revolvers sold quite a bit but most came back with problems and customer service was not what it should have been. So I would have to say no.

I am looking now for a nice Ruger speed, security or service six in 357 and will continue until I find one. I am not getting out as much as I did but this will pass and I will be out and about looking again.

And if I can find a nice OP in 4 inch 38 or Metrapolitan or Trooper I will seriously look at those too.

When it comes to revolvers, I'm pretty much set on Smith & Wesson. Have bought a couple of Colt SAA's in the past and a couple of Ruger Old Army's. S&W (Mod 41), CZ (75 and 97) and FWB (AW93) for bottom feeders.

Certainly - Ruger is a fine choice if you can look gun over deliberately and carefully before laying credit card/cash onto counter. But IMO that is needed for all firearm purchases these day. Are there horror stories, yes; but a lot of satisfied owners, also. DA Colts are great; I have but a few and prefer to look at them occasionally, rather than beat them up or mar their fine finishes.

I personally do not buy Taurus, etc. My old CA Bulldog was useful principally for testing how much Unique it took over a 255 gr GC SWC to induce curvature in ejector rod.
YMMV.

Good luck and happy searching.

I currently own two non-S&W revolvers. One is a Ruger Single-Six .22lr/.22mag. The other is a Rossi 518 in .22lr. Both are fun to plink with at the range. I did own a Taurus 85UL (alloy frame) and found it to be as accurate and as easy to shoot as my 60-9. I did trade it for a model 19-4 a few years ago when I started building up my K frame collection.

Surely you jest. Life is too short to contaminate my collection. I do have much better quality semi-automatics, made in Switzerland. Like Swiss watches.

Yes, ofcource I buy a revolver without the name Smith and Wesson.
Especially an antique one with a special lock or feature.
Reason? I am a revolver collector. Aldo S&W has my preference.

While I love my Smiths, I own many different lines of revolvers for different purposes.
There was once, about 10-12 years ago, I was putting together a 'woods scouting, hunt club chores, 'woods' carry gun. I wanted something on the order of a stainless 'K' frame. Only I did NOT want a .22, ,.38 or .357. I wanted a .44 Spl. or Mag.
Of course, S&W offerred no such thing.
The answer, a Taurus M441, 4", SS 5-shot .44 Spl. with adjustable sights. Essentially a 'K-framish' revolver.
I've fed it a steady diet of Elmer Keith/Skeeter Skelton .44 Spl. loads and it still pretty tight and shoots well. Other than smoothing the action and putting Uncle Mikes grips on it, not much had to be done.
Don't mind using it HARD and never in a hurry to clean it.
It fits the bill.

Always wanted S&W to make a 'K' frame 5 shot .44 Spl. in a 4" adj. They never did, so I had to go elsewhere.....

No, I hate Ruger with every bone in my body and with the low cost of a Smith and Wesson, Taurus doesn't get my money.

Most of my revolvers are Smiths, but I also have several Colts , and at least one of each of the following: Ruger, Iver Johnson, Webley, Enfield, Mauser, St. Etienne.

I carry a Ruger SP 101 and have a Super Redhawk both fine revolvers but Smiths and Colts just have more class.

I've been tempted on Blackhawks in 41/44/45LCs. The only non-Smith I have now is a Charter Arms 44 I got just for 44 shotshells.

I'm a Pistol People. My most favorite gun is a Custom Colt Delta Elite.. But in revolvers I always favored the S&W. Anaconda 44 is just too big, and Taurus? Don't make me laugh.

Edit:I would jump on a Freedom Arms 454 if the price was right.

With the possible exception of US Firearms' Single Action revolvers, there isn't a single revolver currently in production that I would want to buy.

Asside from 2 Ruger single actions, all my revolvers are S&W's. I no longer have a "need it" list for hand guns. My "want it" list is rather short also. There is nothing on the list but S&W.

Colt, Ruger, Dan Wesson, Webley, Nagant...sure. Nothing against the other modern manufacturers, but they just don't turn my crank.

SAA revolver, yes, I would buy a Colt or one of the better clones, or a Ruger or a Freedom Arms.

But for a Double Action Revolver, today, Generally NO.

I have had several Colt Pythons from the Custom Shop, and one tuned up for PPC By Reeves Junkind of Texas Hiway Patrol fame.

In fact one year the ladies PPC Champion used my Reeves Junkind Python for the Leg Match.

The Colt Python's and the Diamondbacks are very accurate handguns...

But I am just not a 38 Special/357ag kind of guy.

My Sister in Law has one of the 5 shot Taurus revolvers in 44 Mag.
I load ammo for her and it shoots real good. It has the ported barrel and with the rubber grips it is comfortable to shoot with Magnum, anno and espeially with the 3/4 poser lead 240 SWC loads I give her for the deer lease.

I have been shooting S&W Revolvers since the early 1970's. I just cannot carry or use any other DA revolver.

So to the OP, just save your money and get that Mod 27 you really want.

You will never be happy till you do...

IMHO of course.

Still it is not a S&W.

However I am just not a 357 Mag kind of guy.

I will say I do have one "off brand" DA revolver I really like. It is a "Webley" actually made by Enfield in 1924.

It has been modified to shoot 45 ACP with the moon clips, one hald or full.

It is very accurate and shoots perfectly to the sights with 230gr HP and Ball ammo. However I do not shoot full power ammo in it often. I loas some light loads for it with 200gr bullets. It shoots low with these but when i get a chance i am going to get some 230/240gr FP or SWC bullets, and again load them "light" to .455 British specs.

I enjoy shooting this old warhorse and I have been impressed and how it actually functions and shoots.
Its break open action is very fast to reload, and its grip angle and trigger action is very good. It is one good Combat/War Revolver

Sure love my S&W's , but I wont leave a let a Colt get away either if I can help it. My latest purchase was this early Colt Trooper MKIII. Very nice gun.

I have a Rossi .22 revolver, and it is a great little gun. I would have no problem buying a Rossi. I also have one of the old style Charter .44 Bulldogs. I bought it mainly out of curiosity, but I would be fine with buying a current model Charter Arms.

I know that Taurus has really raised its standards, but I can remember the piece of junk they produced around 1980-1981, when I started in the police academy. I don't think I could bring myself to buy a Taurus, although they do have some nice looking guns. (And yes, I know they own Rossi now.)

I'm not really into revolvers anymore (and as of this post, I don't own one) which is somewhat strange because a few years ago, all I had were revolvers, and I didn't care anything about semis. However, if I was going to buy a revolver, it would be a S&W or a Ruger. I would buy a Colt DA revolver as a collectible, but I don't think I would want to carry/shoot one on a regular basis...just because it is getting harder to find gunsmiths who can tune or repair them, or so I have read.

I would never buy any other brand revolver...and especially not a Taurus. I owned one, and that was enough. One of the shops I frequent recently had some of their small revolvers on clearance for like $250 apiece, and they weren't selling (it is a small, rural shop, so that may have something to do with it.)

I've bought Ruger, Taurus and Cimmaron. All have given me excellent service. As for Taurus, the ones I've bought have always gone straight to my local gunsmith for two hrs of cleaning, polishing and any adjustments. They come from the factory pretty filthy, which might be the reason they have such a bad reputation. I've been very lucky I guess.
