Default Rimfire Rifle Scopes?

I want to scope the Browning .22 Semi-auto rifle I traded for last weekend. I am looking for recomendations on a compact, decent quality, scope that will not look too bad on this trim little rifle. So far I am considering either the 2.5x or 4x Leupold rimfire scopes. What else is out there. Do any of you guys have any suggestions? I would have preferred to just use the open sights but my eyes are long past that.

I have a Burris 3 - 9x airgun scope on a Ruger 77/22 and I like it a lot. It isn't a big scope but putting it on the Browning it might still look big and kind of out of place. The Leupold 4x rimfire scope is just a little smaller and might be the best scope for the Browning. I assume you are talking 1 inch scope tubes. at one time Browning had a 7/8 inch tube scope that might be ok if you can find one.

Kahles used to make a 2-7 x 36 specifically for rimfire rifles . It had the best optics of any non-target rimfire scope . Check with SWFA.com on their " Sample List " . Many times you can find trade-ins , discontinued models , blems , salesman samples etc for a fraction of the cost of brand new . I have a Leupold 4x rimfire & the optic quality leaves much to be desired , especially in heavy cover / low light . Leupold does have an excellent warranty , but not the best glass . Especially considering what you pay for their scopes .

Default Scope

Hi Gary,
I don't think you will regret the Leupold.
Here are a couple of cheaper options to consider.
Here is a picture of mine with a Burris Mini and Burris mount.
Both scope and mount are discontinued but I put them in my favorites as Gunbroker and E-Bay searches and found both this spring with little effort. They are out there. It is not a rimfire scope but it out shoots some of my other .22's with rimfire scope on them.
The other is a fixed four Nikon Pro Staff Rimfire. It can be found for under 100.00 and the more I use it the more I like it. They make a variable rimfire scope also. Here is the Nikon on the BAR.
.
I like both of these set ups but there would not be anything wrong with the Leupold.
Good luck
Mike

I do most of my rim fire shooting with a Ruger 77/22 stainless synthetic, All Weather. It is threaded for my AAC Scarab suppressor with a Nikon 4X fixed power scope. The little Nikon is more than adequate for shooting out to 50 yards. While up in the East TN mountains two months ago we went through several hundred rounds of RWS Dynamit Nobel subsonic ammo. The guys we were vacationing with claimed it was the most accurate 22 they have ever fired. We were cutting weed stems right below the flower at 50 yards. I have it sighted at 25 yards, but it will hit bottle caps from there to 50. I know there are plenty of expensive rifle/scope combinations out there, but for the money, this rig is a monster. I believe the suppressor has a lot to do with bullet stabilization, and the RWS SS is very consistent.

The October issue of Shooting Times has an excellent review of a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x 40mm BDC 150. I am looking for a scope for my Ruger 10/22 and after reading the article it looks like this may be it. Good price too. Congrats on picking up that Browning SA22... that is on my wishlist... someday!

I am a believer in the Leupold .22 RF scopes. My son has a 4X, I have a 3X9 and my BIL has a 2X7 so that is one of each and we are all happy. Larry

Whatever you buy, make sure it is parallax adjusted for about 50 yds. It does make a difference in your on target results. Currently my 77/22 (ca. 1985) is topped with a Weaver Wideview 2-7V that came off of a sporterized 03-A3 once owned by my brother. It has given superlative results. At low power it offers a large field of view while at high power it allows precision aiming at any distance where one might commonly employ a .22 LR rifle.

I found a Leupold 4x RF Special on SWFA's sample list and ordered it this morning. I found a new old stock Redfield mount on Ebay. I have a set of Leupold rings that fit a grooved receiver. I think I am set. Once everything gets here I will mount the scope and get to the range to see how it shoots.

I am very happy with my Leupold VX-I 2-7 X 28mm on my Henry Rifle. I also have an old Simmons 22MAG 4X32 scope on my Ruger 10/22. They both get the job done but the Leupold is the clearer glass of the two.

I really like the Leupold 3x9 RF. I have their 2x7 too, but prefer the former. I also have various other RF scopes from Weaver, Burris etc, and have found the Leupold 3x9 RF to be the best all around for my purposes.

I don't think you'll find better for the money than a Leopould.
I have a BSA sweet .22 on my 10/22. I've had no issues with it in a couple years of use. However I did check out the Nikon rimfire scope at my LGS last week and I may have to start saving for one. Brighter than the BSA (and well it should be. I picked up the BSA for under $50 with rings on Amazon).

Tapatalk ate my spelling and grammar.

I have a fixed 4X Nikon on my Browning BL22 and it's been the perfect medicine for gray squirrels.

I've always been a believer that there's no sense spending good money on a quality rifle just to put cheap glass on it. I have several rifles where the glass mounted on them cost nearly what the gun cost. But, one exception has been the BARSKA 3x9 with IR reticle I put on my Ruger 10/22. I have been very pleased and impressed with this $75.00 scope.

I think you are on the right track with the straight tube (25mm) objective lense scopes. Look at some shotgun scopes, too. Low magnification, small size, 50 yd paralax, etc.
Good luck

I'm going through the same decision process. The scope needs to be shorter for the gun.

Does anyone know if Leupold will adjust the parallax to 50 yards if you send them the scope? I have a really nice 2x7 28mm compact that I'm not using that I've been thinking of putting on a 22 MWR carbine?

Munster- pretty sure they will. Give em a call.
But, why not go ahead and mount it and shoot it a while. The Mag is more than a 50 yd cartridge. You might be happy with it as-is.

If I'm not mistaken the Leupold 2x7/28 is parallax adjusted to 60 yards from the factory, and the 3x9 EFR does have an adjustable objective.

I have one of each, the 2x7 on a Savage MkII, and the 3x9 on a modified 10/22. They are fantastic scopes, so much so that I just purchased a second one yesterday to place on a Tactical Solutions .22LR upper. I highly recommend these scopes. They are somewhat more expensive than the run of the mill rimfire scope, but IMO, worth the price.

Thanks for the advice. Maybe I'll just try it.
It's an older VX II and I just assumed it was set for 100 yards.

I have a full size scope on my Ruger 10/22. I never liked the rimfire scopes. Just because you are shooting a .22, it doesn't mean that you can't make use of the field of view and the light gathering power of a larger objective.

gdauth, as others have stated, the paralax is typically set further out than most rimfires are used at. For plinking and most hunting situations it's not a big deal. For the folks trying to make little bitty groups (one hole type groups) it makes a difference.

And I have the same scope on my Ruger 10/22 Takedown. I needed a compact scope so the back half of the Ruger (with the scope on) would fit in the bag. Works great, gotta love that 2x7 rimfire Leupold!

I have both the 4X and 2-x28 Leupold RF scopes....great scopes, but on my old Winchester and Remington I try to keep to 3/4 Redfields....they just look correct on the small rifles....or org win scopes

or old Weavers

That slim trim Browning deserves a slim trim compact scope, even if it a fixed power. Putting some big clunky "tactical" scope on it would be a crime. Take a look at the Weaver Classic Rimfire, 2.5 - 7 X 28. Those look nice and go for about $160.00. The leupold 22 compacts are always a good choice too.

I have two of those Nikon 3-9x40 prostaff scopes and love how you still can see at dusk. They’re on a CZ 452 American .22lr and a Winchester 490.

The Winchester 490 doesn't see much use so I may move the Nikon over to my Winchester 9422.

I have a Henry Golden Boy but wasn’t sure how solid that cantilever mount would be. Maybe I’ll get another Nikon.

UPDATE: I did get the cantilevered scope mount for the Henry Golden Boy and put the Nikon 3-9x40 on it with low scope rings. Very nice!

I put an older Tasco (made in Japan) 4x32 scope on the Winchester 9422 and will probably get another Nikon 3-9x40 eventually. Truth is I seldom use more that the 4 setting on my .22 rifles so a 4x32 is good.

Anyone have a recommendation for a Winchester 9422 angle eject in 22 Magnum?

I would not recommend any 3/4" .22 scope. I have two scoped .22 rifles, both with 4X 1" scopes, one a Weaver K4, the other a Simmons. Both work fine. For distances usually involved in shooting a .22, a 2-3/4X 1" scope would probably be even better.

Basic Leupold 2x7 will do fine for plinking and small game hunting. I wouldn't worry about parallax issues unless you're shooting some type of serious match competition. If it bothers you get a rim fire scope of some type at a higher price.

I think highly of some of the more expensive scopes, but didn't want to spend a lot on a scope for my Ruger American .22 Mag. I put a little 1" tube Bushnell "Dusk and Dawn" 1.5X4.5 on it. My little rifle is only used occasionally at the range, out to about 100 yds. So demands on rifle and scope are moderate, but no complaints with this rifle and scope combo so far.

I checked out an Ad in the paper some years ago. It turned out that a lady whose husband had took off with another woman was selling his guns. I bought a Marlin 22 with 4 power three quarter Redfield for $50. There was a Ruger 22 Single Six for $100 but it was pretty rough. She had some shotguns also but dumb me didn't look at them. I guess I was too happy with the Redfield. That evening they were gone.
The Redfield had the adjustment covers missing and I called Redfield and they sent me two, no charge.

At the last local gun show, I found a like-new condition Weaver K3 (3X, 1") scope for $25. I replaced the Weaver K4 on the rifle previously pictured (a Remington 550-1) with the K3. I like it better than the K4 as it has a longer eye relief and produces a brighter view. 3X is plenty good enough to hit anything within the reasonable effective range of any .22 rifle. A variable-power scope is not needed, and in my opinion is undesirable.

We have a Weaver T36 and .22” caliber holes are easily spotted on light colored paper at 100yds.
One scope solutions!
For budget F class I’m told..... as too many golf courses got in the way of those bullet’s flight path in South Florida. Sad but true!!!

For Rimfire's I use Leupold 3 x 9 x 33 Ultra-light Compact WITH Parallax adjustment feature in conjunction with Burris Signature Scope Mount Rings.

If you can find one, the Burris Mini 4x would be another choice.
Some of them even had AO.

I had one but sold it when I bought a Leupold. Mine was a Mini-6X though which are even more rare than the 4X. Believe it or not I actually sold it for more than I paid for it! It was a great scope but I wanted the Parallax adjustment and the 3 - 9 zoom.

There is very little parallax at lower scope magnifications which is why such fixed-power scopes normally have no parallax adjustment feature as it is unnecessary. Most variable-power scopes having top-end magnifications of over 6X do incorporate some parallax adjustments, as do higher magnification fixed power scopes. However, variable power and high magnification fixed power scopes don't serve much of a useful purpose on a .22 rifle due to the shorter target ranges typically involved.
