Default New carry pistol found at weekend show. The PM 45 Kahr?

Greetings S&W lounge friends. I'd like to share with you my latest non S&W carry gun
and a sharp Damascus steel dagger I found this past weekend.

The pistol is a Kahr PM45.
I never thought I would own a Kahr. But when the opportunity presented itself to buy this one for well below wholesale,
I did some investigating and found that they were rated very highly.
So, I made the deal. I shot it with my carry ammunition which is standard velocity Critical Defense and if functioned without pause.

Small and light it drops into pocket or I.W.B. holster easily.
6 rounds of 45 A.C.P. ready to go.

Did I mention it is really small?

Here are pictures. What say you? Edited 9/17/11 Guess what I found out today.

The knife was made in India and they sell for $25, on E bay. No wonde it was so cheap. But a darn good copy
of a quality knife.

As they say; Caveat emptor ; buyer beware , if the deal seems too good to be true, it is.

Regards
A.F.

Great looking knife, I would leave it alone. And you are right, be careful handling it, I have a double edge applegate-fairbain and it has "got me" a couple of times. What kind of scabbard did it come with?

Peyton , it came with a plain black leather belt sheath that is a bit too big for it.
I am having a custom shark shin belt scabbard made for it by a local
leather man.

Great choice of caliber for carry. Looks like a nice gun as well. What was your former carry gun?

Personal question: Do you carry a sidearm you just bought without sending a lot of ammo downrange first to make sure it is functional? I always felt it best to carry a tried and true gun.

As to the knife, I would leave it as it is. Looks too good to be doing anything to it.

I carry a Kahr P380 every day and have several more. The trigger takes a little getting used to but that should not be a problem. The trigger is so smooth. IMO leave the knife as is. Don

Oldman 45 , my previous carry guns have alternately been Smith & Wesson K frames, either a model 10 or a model 65 or 66.

I am also quite fond of the 1911 and own several including a Smith 1911SC that I carry in a pancake holster.

And Yes, I am one to make sure a carry gun functions without question.
First, I have a friend, Bubba Blades here on the forum who has ,
and carries, a Kahr PM45
and has extensively tested his without malfunction.
Second, when I fired this one at the range that day I could just tell by the
way it ran that if I did my part and didn't limp wrist it, that I would have no trouble.

Recoil with the 185 Hornady rounds is decidedly snappy. And unless a good 2 hand hold is adopted,
it will flip up quite a bit. All the weight in this gun is in the slide, so in recoil it goes bam, to the rear, and snap, back into battery.
If I remove the top end the frame feels like nothing at all, it feels like a plastic toy gun.

Another reason for owning a Kahr or even a Glock is the lack of emotional
attachment to it. It is a tool. A replaceable tool.
When I look at any of my Smith and Wessons I see Craftsmanship and
well, , art, of sorts.
I do not want to have to use one of my Smiths in a self defanse situation and risk losing it to the authorities.

That said, did I mention it's really small, for a 45.

Regards
Allen Frame

Allen,
You have been known to carry more than one gun at a time. I know that your Kahr PM45 has shared CCW duties with a certain sweet 3" K frame S&W. I made the above damascus dagger to ride along with my Kahr PM45 and constructed a sheath out of wood, leather and fiberglass. Because of the unusual shape and color of my sheath, I call my setup the "Tactical T**D."
Good luck with your new gun and knife.
Mark

That's a beauty of a knife. If it were made in Hawai'i, then someone who went to the trouble of creating a damascus blade would probably have used koa wood. Koa wood is local to the islands and expensive. All other woods have to be shipped. I'm thinking it may have been brought there then shipped out.

Sea salt is always a problem there. With the constant tradewinds no metal is safe if uncared for. Leave your car unwashed for a month, you'll find rust spots forming. Someone really took care of that knife.

Damascus steel sure is pretty, are you sure you want to blue it? I would be inclined to leave it as is...

I can understand it speaking to you. It's speaking to me now. I like the spear point Bowies much more than the other traditional style. The workmanship looks very good and I would leave as is and enjoy that pattern. It looks great. Wouldn't mind haviong one of those myself.

Enjoy

Bluing it might well turn out beautiful. But how would you get the wooden grip off before dipping it?

The PM is indeed a tiny 45. They're quite accurate too, surprisingly so.

Default kahr and that rediculous knife

The kahr is a good find but the knife is rediculous. In most states even with a ccw, anything other than a gun that is construed as a weapon will get your ccw revoked. Knives from location to location have a 3 or 4 inch limit. Check your local
laws. You shouldnt let somone into your space that close where you would need to employ that knife. Sell, the knife and buy a great pair of reebok sneakers so you can run away fast and not have to do battle!!!!!

Default PM 45

They are very nice I had P/PM 45's watch the mag release. My mags
started dropping out. Called KAHR and they sent me the new improved
ones. They were both great to shoot and carry. But when big $$$$$ are
offered ,they go. Good luck

I'm picking up a PM45 later today. I was shopping for something small for carry besides (or with) a 1911 Commander, and this one has a good reputation. It might be on the large side for pocket carry, but I'm not one for tight jeans anyway. I wasn't interested in a .380, and not that fond of 9mm either.

The standard magazine (shown) holds 5 rounds, but Kahr makes a 6 round version for the PM45 with an extension for your pinky. Any Kahr .45 magazine will fit if you don't mind a gap.

That knife looks like a museum piece - a real beauty.

Kahr PM45

My review of the Kahr PM45. It's a heck of a gun! Lots of power in a very small package.

The OP is in Florida, where a CCW allows us to carry any knife we choose. We're also permitted to carry billies.

I had a Kahr MK40 until two days ago.
Great gun. One ragged hole at 7 yards slow fire two hands standing.

Unfortunately, I shoot left hand and when firing a fast follow up shot my finger would activate the magazine release.

Can't carry in NJ anyways, but I can dream.
