Default Dallas VA Hospital Bans Knives Now

I had to visit the Dallas VA hospital this past week to have some tests run. A new sign on the door reads that "Guns, Knives, and Other Weapons" are now banned there.

No checkpoint yet, so I asked just inside the door. Personnel there told me not to worry about ordinary pocketknives and said that no metal detectors are in use.

But the men asked were not VA Police, and I avoided asking the one officer I saw, who was busy on some errand, anyway.

Better leave your pocketknife in the car now. No idea whether they'll start checking via detectors or searches.
I think this is a kneejerk reaction to the Boston bombings.

Frankly, if you can afford a private doctor elsewhere, I'd avoid the VA altogether. I'm very uncomfortable with many of their medical personnel. But I needed a test done there that my private doctor couldn't perform with the equipment available in her clinic. If you get a good doc who actually cares and can't otherwise afford certain services, especially surgeries, you may need to go there, and I am grateful for the help that I've received, when it's been competent.

I'm guessing that all VA facilities may have posted the same. No warnings about bringing in a pressure cooker, though...

How about those martial arts types who claim there hands to be regestered weapons? Guess they are out of luck. Somewhere I have a old t-shirt that says the doctor will see you now. Shows doc holidays picture. (Val kilmer)

Hope you do not need any surgery that requires a scalpel.

It's a Goverment office. The hand specialist I saw a couple of years was in the same building as the Social Security office. Guns, knives and other weapons weren't allowed there either. No metal detector but I wasn't going to take the chance and left my pocket knife in the truck.

Hey, hey, don't you know if you run with those sharp pointy things you could put your eye out or hurt someone?! It's a matter of safety. Lets do it for the children.

Yeah, same at the Social Security office here, although I haven't been in several years. It's far across town from the VA, but even post offices have signs, although they don't define what a legal knife (if any) might be.

I pretty much quit using the post office, preferring shorter lines and being able to carry my knife into a nearby UPS store. UPS also has copiers and more considerate personnel.

Years ago when I smoked a pipe I had one of those tools that you simply tamp the tobacco with. I was going in a hospital and they made a big deal out of it.

I am going to weigh in on this one. I work in a level 1trauma center in a downtown area. We get all kinds of badness in there. We have a no weapons policy- knives guns etc, and everyone goes through a metal detector. Keeps me safe while trying to save lives.

The signs have been up at all the Central Texas VA facilities for years.

I'm thankful for My VA Hospital.
Ours has always had a no weapons policy
since I've been for years.
Fed. facility, just like the Post Office.

It's not a knife. It's a toothpick, fingernail cleaner, and letter opener all rolled into one.
