your favorite sidearm
i will give a few details and tell what choices are .
i am not a hunter but enjoy some target shooting and frequently use i silo type target for defensive practice .
i do possess several variety of hand guns , revolvers in a couple of different calibers and autos the same .
s&w 4" 357 mod 686
just bought this gun last year at gun show....shots and handles like a dream even decent with full house loads had in years past had a 6" of the same gun , but i swear this gun is more accurate. simply love it .
colt 1991 gov 45 acp
mildly customized but basically nearly stock it has a metalife chromeium finish and some fancy rosewood grips and my initials are on the slide with an old style colt rampant horse engraved there also. it is fun to shoot , accurate and reliable and i have taught several people who to point and hit with this gun who were weary to even shoot it ....yes that includes 4, 5 women who surprised theirselves after i gave them some instruction and what to expect from the gun
its just flat hard to beat a 1911 that works good !
ruger sp101 2" in 357
tough as nails and packs a punch. good defensive gun and even with only 5 shots i would trust this gun to do the job if i can do mine . it is ported , a feature some dont like , but i think it is worthwhile for me and this gun and i have seen the same gun fired with out the porting and i stil preferred my ported version , it has some special grip inserts and the mentioned porting and is simply a wonderful handful of a handgun.
s&w 442 bodyguard 2" 38
it is always with me and some wearing on the gun is evidence of it being carried. i simply love smith revolvers and this is a working gun for sure action is pretty smooth also
i wont tell you how how much i like my smith mod 19 or my glock second gen 19 or my ruger 22/45 but suffice to say those mentioned 4 guns are
hard to beat for me
how about your choices and for what reasons ? !

Geez, asking which is my favorite is like asking me which of my children I love the most. They all have their own, unique qualities.

S&W Model 10 with a 5 inch barrel. It's more accurate than I am and shoots to POA. The .38 Special cartridge does everything that I need in a handgun. And to me, the gun balances better and is more handsome than any other gun.

It amounts to rediscovery for me. For the last few weeks, this old beater has become my favorite once again. Soon another will become my favorite once again, etc., etc.
This one is probably coming up again soon.

Ruger Mark III, plain jane with fixed sights and 5" barrel. Had I known any better I suppose I would have bought a Mark II, but there it was calling my name, with a decent price tag on it, and no Mark IIs in sight at any price. I can hit more with it than anything else I own, and I can shoot it all afternoon for less than $20. Plus, it has been a nice introduction to shooting for a few women and youngsters.

My favorite is an Accurized Colt 1911 in 45 ACP with a Barsto barrel, and Bomar sights. They will shoot 3" groups at 50 yards.
My second favorite is a 4" S&W 44 Mag.
My third would be a S&W Airweight Bodyguard.
My fourth a 6 1/2 [or 6"] S&W 44 Mag.
My fifth, my normal everyday carry gun, a Colt Lightweight Commander, in 45 ACP.
I would not want to be without the above 5 handguns.

No way could I narrow it down to one. Maybe a half dozzen depending on whats happening. While I have many fine handguns that some would call safe queens, it seems what I carry gets the nod from a light weight easy packing and are somewhat top condition shooters that wont give me a stroke if get nicked up.
A old but new s&w 3" model 36
A 5" model 29-2
A 4" model 24-3
A 3" model 66-3 lew horton special
A 2 1/2" nickle python
A .44 special 4 3/4" colt saa
Everbody needs a old ruger single six too.
EDIT, Got thinking about it and it dawned on me that I been carrying this old early 50s model M&P the most, so better include it!

As much as I love my S&Ws I choose to carry a Glock G19 with a weapon mounted light. That is my everyday carry for work. It's ugly and all business. Super reliable and does head shots at 25 yards.

If I were down to 1, it would be my 9mm CZ75B with a Kadet upper. Pretty much covers my handgun needs. I used to have 2 (bought a spare for when the shooter wore out). Never happened. Joe

My all time favorite handgun was a Beretta Centurian 92D , shorter barrel than a standard 92, double action only, slick slide no safety. 15 round mags with 20 round backups. Hands down the most reliable handgun I ever owned. I traded it on a new G26 when I needed a smaller CCW due to some death threats by a dead druggies family (long story). Second fave was a GP-100 4 inch 357. Third was a Colt Delta 10mm I bought new. I had these gun when I lived on a 500 acre farm with no one around for miles. Would reload all night long and shoot rifles, shotguns and pistols 2 -3 hours a day. Thoses guns got shot ALOT! Had to sell most all my guns to keep a roof over my families head. I am now getting more and more fond of my 3913 and Model 65 as I shoot them. With 2 small kids and a 45 hr a week job and also an owner of a small bussiness/retail shop plus many side jobs going on, finding time to shoot is hard.

My everyday carry is a inside holster 38 taurus 85 titianium. but when the weather lets me wear a vest , a springfield 45 1911 is on my belt. When just out in the woods or hunting a S&W mod 25 45 long colt is my choice of my armory to wear. My bedroom gun is a mossberg 12 ga with short bbl and lots of 00buck. Don't rattle my door in the middle of the night.unnessasarly.

When I want to hit small things with extreme accuracy, its my High Standard Victor with the 4x scope mounted.
When I want a carry gun for self defense that I know will go bang every time, its my Glock 26.
When I want a light weight, accurate fun gun for woods carry, its my Walther P-22.
When I want a big bore auto, its a 1911, usually my Kimber Custom Target.
For big game handgun hunting, its my Ruger .44 mag Redhawk with a red dot sight.
And when I want a carry gun that will handle anything, and carry comfortably for my frequent walks in the woods, its my S&W four inch 629.
The rest of my safes content seem to usually play second fiddle to the above...

For serious social purposes, to use Elmer Keith's delightful phrase; I like my Series 70, Colt 45. It has night sights and I had Jim Clark put a beavertail grip safety on it as I didn't want to bleed all over my gun. He also stippled the front strap with his special, sharp pointed, stippling; it's hard to let go of that gun. And he gave it the best 4.5 lb trigger pull I've ever fired. It's in a holster attached to my mattress as I wrie.
For carry in the desert, my old Ruger Security Six; accurate and powerful. It has Hogue grips and a Woolf trigger spring, otherwise stock. Probably fired 3000 rounds.
For competition: my stock S&W 41, SN 9948. I bought it new, and still have the box, etc. I replaced all the springs a few years ago. It's probbly fired about 10,000 rounds.
For plinking; my Model 317, 22 cal snubbie. I put Woolf spring in it to replace those that seem to have come from the suspension of an M1 tank. I also like to shoot my Model 39s at tin cans out there, but picking up the bass is a nuisance.

Urban setting .. its a 1911.
you cant argue the effectiveness of the 45 auto as a combat round.
the 1911 is one of the most reliable pistols made.
its also more concealable than most due to its single stack mag configuration.
in the country where probability shifts to being attacked by either man or beast ... 629.
44 magnum might be trumped by a few calibers such as 454, 50AE, 50Wyoming express, 460 SW and 500 SW. It is, however a manageable round for those willing to season themselves to it, and will take care of just about any problem a gun is fit to solve.

I am fortunate to have several that are a true joy to shoot. I will not list them all, but one that I carry is both accurate and a pleasure, my LW Colt Comm. It has had extensive work done to it and my gunsmith has done an exceptional job.

Like most everyone else here, I have more than just a couple favorites. And, also like most everyone else, what I pack depends on what I'm doing and where I'm at. But my daily carry for the most part is a 2" Ruger SP-101 .357, wearing Hogue rubber grips, in a Galco Combat Master. Powerful, concealable, virtually indestructable, and shoots to point of aim at 10 yards with Mag-Tech 158 gr. JHP's.

Here is another favorite but I made it a safe queen. Too valuable to shoot. When I bought it sans box or PW 40+ years ago it appeared unfired. I only took it out once and shot it off the bench. It HAD the original grips. I took them off and lost them. Put on these cokes.
It`s a 1950 .44 special shipped jan 17, 1955 to union hardware co., los angles calif.

Easy for me to choose!
It's easy for me to choose because I have thinned my guns considerably, down to these two handguns.
The 65 is a 1990 LEO trade in. 4". It shoots fine and I use it for deer hunting. 25 yards is a long shot in these hills. I love the way it carries and I carry it mostly during hunting season.
The 37 is a 68 or 69 model. It is a little dandy and doesn't see anything but standard pressure .38's. 158 gr. LRN.
All I really need around here, although the bear and mountain lion population seems to be on the rise. is these two fine handguns. Both shooters, and both reliable accurate guns in great mechanical condition. I love my leather too.
Pray for our country's decision making,\
Gordon

I bought my very first handgun in 2008 after much research. I'd also qual'd with both the 1911 and M9 in the Navy. My preference was for a .45ACP in DA/SA.
Wound up getting a Ruger KP90. I've not been sorry. It is still the first string HD weapon though an M66 sleeps next to it for backup.
As for "favorite" I don't know.

Favorite Handgun:
1911s, Browning HPs/1910s, Glocks, Walthers, S&W Revolvers, Sigs, Ruger Revolvers/.380s/MkIIs and DRACOs. The last for letting my grand kids shoot dried cow patties out in the fields.
The one I will never part with till I die and then my son gets it, 1851 Navy Colt that my Grandfather carried as a Drummer in the War of Northern Aggression.

Favorite?
What's the criteria?
Favorite concealed carry? - Model 60
Favorite range gun? - Model 15 4"
Favorite recently acquired - Model 36 3"
And there are others, of course.
So many guns, so little time!

Let's see here.
Home defense I like revolvers--
SW LW .357
SW .327mag (2)
M28 (2)
586 (2)
M 25
M16
Carry--I like semi's. They carry and conceal much better than revolvers.
Norinco .45
Colt .45
STI .45
Colt LW Commander .38super
Colt Commander .45
STI 9x23

I treat mine like ties, every morning I get up and pick which one I feel like for that day. That way none feel left out.

Any of my S&W or Ruger wheelguns.......
I feel just about the equal of any threat with one of my 581's or a GP100 loaded with 158 gr. .357 HP's.

Usually an old 49, but I've been picking up a LW Commander .45 a lot lately when I go out the door.
OK - OK - 686

That's another good choice. Forgot to list it because when I was posting I forgot I had one! Not a 39-2 but a 39. A great gun.
