K98 Mauser help
I recently acquired a very nice 1939 Mauser. It's what I belive is a low serial number 6xxx, and is in perfect condition both finish and mechanical. All of the parts have matching numbers. I do know some of it's history (since 1945).
Where would I go for more information and a rough idea of value?
Thanks,
Munster

Proof of provenance will be everything. Humped "matching" Mausers are a growth industry at the moment. I take it that you believe/know that this is a GI bringback. Has the stock been dufflecut?

More details.
Maker?
Probably a lower case letter with that serial number?

PM Sent
"g" under the serial number. 147 on the receiver for the maker. Stock is not cut. German proofs on all the parts.
Thanks,
Munster

German military rifles (and pistols) were numbered in batches of 10,000 (1-9999) with letter prefixes. In WWI, starting about 1916 the letters were reset to 'a' at the end of the year; I think they ran until 9999 in WW II. The proof marks on the parts are waffenamts, showing inspection and acceptance by the German military. 147 is the maker's code, but I don't know what it is; I don't have my Pawlas handy. Someone else can possibly help on that one.
