Here is the 1949 .257 Roberts with the rear prong horn:

Here is the 1958 .270 Featherweight with the rear flip up:

Here are the results of three shot groups at 100 yards sitting at the bench with Hornady .257 Roberts and Remington .270 Reduced Recoil loads. Was aiming at the big red dot and the black dot is a quarter for size comparison:

Neat rifles, and good shooting...

A Pre-64 Model 70 in .308 or 30/06 is on my short list of rifles to obtain....

I like the look of that featherweight!

I am thinking to get a Weaver K 2.5 for the .270 and to leave the .257 withe the irons. I expect to shoot the .270 mich more often

Sir, good on ya. I love the old Model 70s, but their factory iron sights leave a lot to be desired. A good scope or peep sight will help tighten the groups up.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Thanks

I was going to go first with the peep, but now I think I should go straight to the glass

BUSHMASTER, are you certain of the date of manufacture of the featherweight? It has a beautiful chuck of lumber, but it has features only available after 1960.

Serial number checks to 1958.

What features are you talking about?

I agree, a weaver on the .270 a few clicks left and you'll be right on at 200 yds. I have a weaver K4 on my pre 64 model 70 in .30-06. I'm going to the range Sunday, I'll post some pics of my groups at 200 yds. Right now I'm about 1.5 inches high at 100 so we'll see at 200.

I have a Weaver K 2.5 on a Remington 760 pump 30-06. Best timber rifle combination I've ever had.

Beautiful rifles. Great calibers. If Winchester had ever made the pre-64 or for that matter the post-64 in a left-handed action, I'd most assuredly have bought one. At 55 I find my groups with iron sights are better if I "soot" the rear and front sight. Also using a pair of 1x reading glasses allows me to get a very good clear view of the front sight. As to mounting a low-power scope, when I bought my left-handed .30-06 Rem. 700LH, the only scope I owned was a little Weaver V1.5-4x. I mounted it and found it to be just about ideal for anything inside of 200 yds. Then... I was given a 3x9 Leupold which i used for the next 20 years. Then I got to thinking about the actual hunting I did, etc. and sold the 3x9 and bought a Weaver 3x from my brother. It is simply perfect. Amazing that it took me about 20 years to come around to what I had initially grasped.

The previous post is of course a photoshop flip.

This, however, is for real:
