Default Colt Official Police .22-Pictures NEW-Range reoprt!

OK, I realize this is the S&W owners forum, however I know there are quite a few Colt collectors here too.

I am very partial to high quality .22 revolvers.

My local wallet drainer has a beautiful six inch Colt Official Police .22LR. Nearly perfect finish. Tight, scant turn line with a set of non original 'stag' grips. From all I can find out, it is a postwar model because it has no patent date on the barrel.

He has $795 on it, though I can probably get it for around $700 OTD because I am a good customer (and give him some good trades form time to time!)

Is it worth that kind of scratch?

I am by no means an expert - on anything. That being said, there are five of them on Gunbroker right now. All can be had between $625 and $850 plus shipping, etc. They wear the original wood stocks which would be a big plus over the non-factory stags. Hope that gets you going in the right direction.

Sorry, I'm not an expert either. But I would envy you for the purchase. That's a classic gun and they're not making any more of them.

Post your question on coltforum.net, they are great guns. Price seems a little high unlless ANIB or close with box etc.

The more I think about that Colt, the less I feel the need for it. Besides I can barely afford my S&W habit, let alone one for the perpetually over-priced Rampant Colt emblem products.

Back to my ongoing addiction.....

I thought I wanted one also a few years ago. It seemed to be a good alternative to the S&W model 45 that was elusive and way out of my budget. Once I actually held one I decided against it because it was a lot larger than I thought it would be. It is more like an L-frame S&W than the K-frame model 45. Just felt too big and heavy for a .22. If only they had made it on the Police Positive frame instead...

A couple years ago I bought a LN .22 4" Trooper. BEAUTIFUL gun. Because of the full frame and small bore and chambers it was way heavy. I paid $600 for that. The best all around "shooter" is still probably a Smith K22, 18, or 617.

The best handling .22 Colt revolver in my opinion is the Diamondback. That's built on the Police Positive frame.
IIRC some earlier Police Positive Targets were made in 22 & 22wrf also but they seem more like an early S&W kit gun with their slim bbls and tiny grips.

The OP in .22 is a nice revolver but a little hefty. Same frame as the Python.
I wouldn't pass one by at the right price though.
A 98% pre-war .22 OP with a box sold for $800 not long ago on GB.

I checked the serial number on the Official Police .22. It is 403XX which according to online sources dates it to 1955.

My price would be $651 plus $7 Transfer and 6% PA Tax = $700.

The 60's era plastic 'stag' grips are the biggest drawback..

grips will not be hard to find. if the gun is nice enough you will make money on it. as stated they don't make them anymore and quality colt revolvers just keep going up. if i didn't have a couple, i would ask you where it is.

I'm a bit off topic but I agree with 2152hq. I actually think this would be where the Diamondback would shine. It's a bit small with a thin forcing cone for powerful .38 Specials.

But it's "smaller-than-k-frame" size should make a great .22.

I saw a Diamondback 2 1/2 inch barrel .22 sell on GB. That might be a nice handling .22!

The Colt is a fine gun and I own, take apart and have worked on plenty of them. When it comes to Double Action Revolvers, Smith has the advantage almost every time! Smiths are smoother, more ergonomic, easier to tune, less complicated, easier to take apart, & are easier to find parts for. IMHO if it's one or the other, go for the Smith! If you can afford both, what the heck.......

The exception on Colt Revolvers is the Single Action Army! Gotta get a few of those

I like the Colt Official Police. I've got three of them in 38.

Everyone seems to think all Colts are overpriced, but in my experience, if you take out the Python and the SSA, they're no more expensive than Smith & Wessson. All three of my 38's have been in the same price range as a Model 10. I don't think they're any better or worse, just different.

The 22's do seem to bring a premium, but I don't see many of them. The last one I saw, and I can't swear which particular model it was, was priced close to a grand.

Check the for sale section of the Colt Forum. There's a nice one there for $500.

Absolutely!

I cut my shooting teeth on one along with its .38 brother. Fantastic revolvers!

I recently purchased (actually, "stole") a .38 special Official Police with 6" barrel made in 1928. The gun is in very nice condition and the trigger is "Like Butta." I never thought I'd like it as much as I do. The .22's command a premium. That goes for Smiths also.

Bottom line, if you like it and want it, get it. If you don't, you may regret it.

I was off today, so stopped by and took another look at the Official Police .22.

Easily a 98% finish gun on the bluing. Only the faintest sharp edges show any finish loss. Ultra tight mechanically. The stag grips are honest to gosh stag- they are so nice I originally thought they were plastic! Darn good all around for a 56 year old gun.

So I put it on lay-a-way. My LGS guy said he knew I was going to

I own a very nice 1954 Colt Official Police in 22 LR. Also own a Colt Diamondback. Both are superb revolvers. The OP is smooth like butter and locks up perfectly. It doesn't have the spit and polish like the DB but is one heck of nice revolver. I own and collect both S&W and Colts and the OP is as good as any of my pre-model K-22's. Doubt you'll be dissappointed if you buy it.

My grandfather gave my mother a new one about 1948-1949, after a peeping tom began bothering Mom at bedtime when my dad was working out-of-town. A few weeks later, he showed up and began knocking on her bedroom window and scratching on the window screen. She screamed; he laughed and began scratching at the screen with both hands. She grabbed the Colt and pointed it at him. He laughed and scratched some more.

She emptied the gun at him through the glass.

Her brother, living next door, called the police. They found blood on the driveway but no peeper.

One of the cops told her, "Lady, you gotta be careful with that thing..."

He never came back.

The Colt is in my safe. It was the first handgun I ever shot.

Default Bought it

Well I decided I liked a high grade shooter Official Police .22 in my collection more than my NIB late 1970's Ruger Security-Six, so I sold it to partly fund this....

I actually like the Stag grips. Wish they were marked as to maker. Can't wait to take this old Colt out for a spin at the range.

Here's the Official Police .22 that I picked up at the Tulsa gun show this past weekend. I posted more detail and pictures about it on the Colt Forum, here: Tulsa gun show haul - Nov 2011

The Official Police is kind of like the model 10. Kind of plain Jane, but excellent revolvers.
I`ve had the Official Police .22 below for several years. It`s not pretty. Has seen some use and at some point was not well cared for. But dispite its cosmetic problems, the old girl is still an outstanding shooter.

Well, if it was replaced it was done by a very good gunsmith.
Bought it as part of my .22 shooter collection to go with my 1954 K-22, so a true ramp target sight is an asset.

Well, I got some range time in with the Colt OP .22 on Friday.
The good news is the timing, lock up and mechanicals are 100% perfect SA and DA. plus the gun is very accurate with good quality ammo.

The bad news- it prints 6 to 7 inches to the left at 25 yards. Would be no big deal if it had adjustable sights. To hit the bullseye, I put the front sight to the right side of the bull with the full width of the sight as 'daylight' between the left rear sight notch and the front sight. With concentration, I could get decent 10 ring hits and smack around my 2.5 inch swinging disk targets.

Any good ideas on regulating this to shoot closer to POA?

I have the same issue with my S&W 3 inch M65 Lady Smith ( 6 inches left, 4 inches low!) and they are the only two fixed sight guns I own that do not shoot POA for me.

On another Colt subject. I looked a two late 1960's Official Police .38 Spls. yesterday. Both were very clean and inexpensive. $279 each. Why were they inexpensive? Neither revolver was in time. One totally skipped a cylinder and the other was very stiff locking on three and super loose on the other three. The store can't find a gunsmith who will touch them

One totally skipped a cylinder and the other was very stiff locking on three and super loose on the other three. The store can't find a gunsmith who will touch them
I wonder if Colt itself would work on them

cylinder&slide will work on them. so will alex hamilton at 10-ring precision. for your sighting problem, try several different kinds of ammo. winchester super-x would be my first.

Default Wonder if it had a Wonder-Sight?

I noticed your pistol has 1 or 2 screw holes on the top rear of the right side of the frame. The other pistols shown don't have them. It may have had a Wonder-Sight after-market adj. sight on it. Wonder sights are still being made, believe it or not, and would be a period-correct addition to your pistol. An internet search should lead you to the mfgr's site. Beautiful pistol == I hope this helps!
