Herters Powermag
Does anybody out there have one? I bought one in 6.5" 357 Magnum for a song. I haven't ever seen many of them. It is in good condition, and looks to have been fired very little. The action is smooth as butter, and the trigger pull light and crisp. Someone fitted it with a nice pair of walnut grips. It shoots as well as nearly any handgun I own. It is about the same size and weight as my Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Magnum. I'll try to get some pics up in a couple of days when the wife gets back with our camera. So far, I'm really impressed with it.

I had one of the 357 Herters Powermags back in the late 60's. They were made by J P Sauer and Sohns in Germany, and were of good quality. They were available in 357, 401, and 44, if i recall correctly. I liked the oversize grip frame that was much larger than any of the other single action Rugers or Colts, and fit my hand well. I used to shoot at the 100 yard range adjacent to the trap range at the local gun club, and we would pick up the unbroken clay targets in the tall grass and lay them on the 100 yard backstop for plinking targets and the old Herters 357 would hit more than it missed. Very accurate gun and I ran thousands of fairly stiff handloads through it and it digested them with no problems.

.357 Powermag
I bought one in the '60s too, if I remember right it cost a grand total of $59.95, plus I ordered 2 boxes of .357 Herters ammo for $3.24 per box of 50, primarily for the brass. The gun was fine, however it was the hottest .357 factory ammo I ever shot, several cases burned a hole thru the side of the brass 1st firing. I still have part of a box, I think it was the thinnest brass I've ever seen. I sold the gun to a friend when I got a new Highway Patrolman, not sure if he still owns it but was real happy with it too. The "good old days", guns and ammo thru the mail with no restrictions.

I was handed one to restore a couple of weeks ago. Does anyone know where to find a schematic for one? Mine's a .357, and I may have another coming up.

Still have my .401 Herters PowerMag. Still shoot it too. Have a good supply of brass too , which some joke is worth more than the guns. I occasionally find jacketed 38-40 bullets , but usually shoot hard-cast. I use a 10mm carbide sizer die.
A bit odd design , but are of the high quality that J.P. Sauer & Sohn was known for.

thats one thing that frustrates me a bit about the gun industry.
the 401, for what it is, should have earned a permanent place in the caliber catalog, but didnt.
it should have fed the 38-40 through its dark ages and paved the way for the 10MM and 40 S&W which it failed to do.
40 cal is some hard turf to plow still evident with the relative obscurity of the 400 corbon

I had a .401 Powermag back years ago. Bought it for $25 and sold it for $75. It was a nice gun but a Smith Mod 39 replaced it.
