Need some help from people who know more than me. So everyone, I am looking for a knife (not knive ), for my brother for his upcoming birthday. He got into bird hunting (mostly duck) last year, and thought a nice knife for prepping the birds he gets would be a good gift. Any suggestions or ideas on what to look for would be great. Thanks!

First of all get to know her parents and her friends, if you like them you'll like...........................OH! you said "knife"!!

There are special "bird knives" out there. You might want to google that.

I prefer the non-serated blade though. They are usually around $40 and made in the USA.

Ryno, thanks for the suggestion, I'll take a loot at it. The only thing I could find while searching was Buck's ErgoHunter Waterfowler, which looks like an okay knife, but not sure how well it holds up.

Don't know about new Buck knives, but my old ones have held up well.

I would NEVER try to talk someone out of buying a knife--I love knives, particularly pocketknives.

But as a longtime bird hunter, I think he would get a lot more use out of a good pair of game shears. I always have at least one pocketknife on me, but the shears are what I use to dress birds, and I dress a lot over the course of a season.

Most everybody I know who bird/duck hunts much does the same.

Cooter, can you point me in the direction of some to look at. I don't bird hunt, and have never dressed a bird, so I appreciate any suggestions.

I've got some Brownings, but I'm not sure they make them anymore. A lot of guys like the Kershaw Taskmasters. They look almost just like my Brownings, can be taken apart for cleaning, and have a bone notch. Nice construction and should last for years.

How 'bout a Remington bird knife? They'll fit anyone's budget, and they aren't bad knives.

Not sure of your price range, but the Case Bird Hunter knives are a nice folder.

I've always liked the Schrade Sharpfinger drop point, though I haven't seen them around much lately.

I'd go for the Kershaw shears. I've got a similar pair of Shrade shears that have served me well for many years. I've got several Kershaw knives including the first superfast thumbstud knife I ever saw. About 1992 I was at Smokey Mountain Knifeworks in Seveirville Tn and they had a guy whose full time job was to flick open a ball bearing lock blade Kershaw. I bought one and still have it.

If you really want to splurge, get him the Kershaw shears and this Kershaw Ken Onion Leek folding knife.

The shears get the job done, and the knife would be handy to have. That setup would make a great present.

Of course that Leek is sleek!

I haven't done much bird hunting, so don't have bird specific knives, but two of the deer knives i have and like offer a bird version. So you might look at the A.G. Russell bird & trout, or the D.H Russell trout & bird knife. Both are sold through A.G. Russell, and a search on their web site should find them. As a brand, I also like Benchmade, and believe they have some that would fit the bill, but they are a little more pricey than the other two mentioned. Good Luck

Hard to beat the Buck #102 "Woodsman" for dressing small game, birds, and small fish. The standard model has the typical Buck phenolic handle with aluminum bolsters, and there's an especially classy version with brass bolsters and cocobolo handle, which would make a very special gift...

Like most gun guys I'm nuts about knives too. I worked as a fruit peddler for 25 years and used a knife literally hundreds of times a day. I've carried Case Sodbusters, Sharkstooths, Buffaloes, trappers, Buck 110s, Folding hunters, Shrade LB7s and many more. Only lost one to my knowledge (Shrade lb7 bearpaw) and I know where I lost it (getting in and out of cars at a dealer car auction) but someone found it before I could get back to it.

Anyway, my point is I've worked with a lot of good knives. I forgot them all when I got that Kershaw one armed man knife back in the early 90s. Since that knife I've bought a few more Kershaws, the Blur and the Leek. The Leek is my favorite. Kinda like a model 19, everything you need and nothing you don't.

I agree with the "game shears". I hunted quail a number of years and my two accomplices were very seasoned bird hunters of many varieties and for them it was game shears.

I think a good present for him at an affordable price would be a Case StockMan design knife. I just bought one from E-Bay for $38. Very nice, sharp knife. Also I like the one with the high carbon steel blade, not the stainless steel blade. IMO the high carbon steel takes an edge easier, and will also take a sharper edge. Overall a great, afforable knife. Tom.

Buy him a Made in China - Stainless Steel knife and keep the Kershaw.
