Default Anyone been following pre-64 Model 70 Market for several years?

I would like to know what has happened to the market price of guns like a good conditon 1956 .270 Featherweight over the past several years.

If the market price is $1400 today, what was it 6 months ago, a year ago, 2 years ago, bbefore the recession hit.

Thank you

Good question.
I just checked my records and see I paid $900 in 2003 for a brand new condition standard model 70 in 30/06.
And $700 for a 1952 vintage Super Grade model 70 in 270 caliber in 98%back in 2005.
They have steadily gone up and because they are collectible and not easy to find in mint condition, pretty much unaffected by economic fluctuations I would think.

I am curious what effect the recession has had.

I have been keeping an eye out for a Model 70 in 06 and seeing well loved sporters in the 8-900 range round these parts, The Target rifles seem to be around 1K for a shooter. I have not seen many Featherweights and the prices give me sticker shock and I just walk away. The nicely neglected rifles and higher grades are a lot more, then off the charts if in something in .257 Roberts. I did see 2 NIB Sporters for 8K each recently, I forget the calibers, and don't know if they even sold at that price. All these observations are about the same as I can remember. All told from my perspective here in Ohio the market has been flat for the last 6-8 years, that's about as far back as my brain can retrieve data.

I haven't bought one in 10 years, but I keep looking at them. There aren't many at my local gun shows, but I have looked at them in Las Vegas, Tulsa and Dallas, too.

IMO, the asking prices for common shooter grade M-70's has stayed about the same for the last 4-5 years.

Quality and rarity bring big dollars, I know I won't part with mine.

Unless they are a rare caliber or higher grade version , and are in absolutely mint condition with box , pre-64 Model 70 prices are no where near what they once were. Field or shooter grade guns are not bringing the demand or dollars they were 10-15yrs ago. The economy has a good bit to do with it , but the myth , and the quality of the rifle are simply lost with todays generation. Everybody want 'tactical/sniper' looking rifles today. And face it , though beautifully made of fine wanlut and blued steel , the average Model 70 was not a 1in group gun. Today , you can get a matte finished , stainless steel , synthetic stocked rifle (read-maintenance free!) for under $500 that will shoot sub-1in groups all day long.

While not tack drivers even the much maligned post 64 70s are better still better made than modern budget rifles.

$450 with the scope.
1.5-2 MOA with any ammo, just shy of sub MOA with hand loads. OK it's not camo, but $10 in spray paint could fix that.

I'd have to disagree. "Better made" is a relative term. Savage , Howa/Weatherby , and a few others are selling rifle packages with sling and (cheap) scope , mount & rings for $500 or less. Weatherbys Vanguard , made by Howa , beautifully made by any standard , has a 1in guarentee and they have synthetic/stainless versions. And even the bargain-priced Stevens 200 from Savage are constantly putting out 1in or better groups. The Savage/Stevens rifles might not be the prettiest rifles out there , but they are well made and they sure do shoot. And ya don't mind pushing aside a briar thicket with it , carrying it in a soaking rain or laying it down on a rocky surface while ya take a leak in the woods.

FWIW , my hunting rifle for the last 35yrs has been a Ruger M-77. No , it's not a 1in rifle , but it has dropped quite a few whitetails with 1 well placed shot. Back then , 2-3in groups were perfectly acceptable hunting accuracy. Beautiful blued steel and walnut (second stock) , I have to be careful to keep it purdy! And I have to take it apart and dry it out after a rainy day. Wood stocks warp and move when wet/dry/wet/dry , and point of bullet impact does shift. Modern rifles with synthetic stocks and stainless steel barrels/actions have eliminated these worrys , as well as being less expensive.

I have yet to find one of the new budget rifles with a quality high polish and deep bluing. They may be out there, I just have not seen them. The Stevens, Marlin, and Mossbergs I looked at were very poorly put together with a cheap "feel" to them. None of them have iron sights anymore, a deal breaker on a hunting rifle, and they all have plastic stocks, some of which are downright flimsy. As far as budget rifles go, I think you get more bang for your buck in an old sporterized Mauser or Springfield, or used post 64 or M700. My local gun dealer have rows upon rows of fine old hunting rifles for the same or less than these new plastic fantastic budget rifles. But then I guess it's my loathing for all things plastic and cheap as to why I have such a longing for a Pre-64 M70. It stinks having champagne tastes and a beer budget.

79ish I think, and it has machine cut checkering. The only thing I really don't like about the rifle is the aluminum floor and trigger guard, but at least it's not plastic.

Looking at the Kimber web site it seems that they are trying to carry on the pre-64 Model 70 tradition.

I would be tempted to get an 84M in 257 Roberts if I hunted
