Mauser 96
Last week, opportunity struck when one surfaced under the glass at the local gun store. I'd been wanting one for a while, and this coincided neatly with my plans to cull the herd. So in exchange for some paper money and some stuff I didn't shoot I got this.
As near as I can discern it's a Model 1930 that's been bored out to 9mm. At some point it's been refinished and I'm uncertain about whether or not it's a matching-parts gun (doubtful) but it'll do for a range toy, I think.
One of those pieces you really wish could talk.

Once upon a time, there was a site, 1896mauser.com, full of useful information (like how to take it apart and put it together). The site was taken over by evil hackers, and is lost.
However, I was able to recover most of the useful stuff. It was the forum that was hacked and where god-awful things happened.
This is my link to the recovered material. Well worth reading. No need to buy $400 books that aren't that well written.
Mauser C-96
Nice pistol.
ps: as you may know, Tokarev ammunition will chamber and fire, but is too hot. OTOH, it's a .308 so casting should be an option.

Nice piece! And the dealer didn't even try to convince you that this is the one that the Boers took off of Churchill!

They're GREAT guns. A Model 1930 reworked to 9mm should be fun shooting Keep your loads light as you don't want the recoil to strain where the bolt stop contact the rear of the receiver. It may well shoot very high; the sights were usually regulated for a stocked pistol which has less flip than one held in the hand.

A quite homely, yet very cool firearm. Congratulations.
