Question 45 colt or 45 long colt---same or different??

Co=worker came into my office this morning and saw I was on the forum. Stated he was getting a Rossie Ranch hand for Christmas.

Went to their web site to look at it, and they have it both the 45 Colt and the 45 LC.

Model RH92-57203 | 45 LC - NEW

Model RH92-57121 | .45 COLT

Thought there was no difference between the 45 Colt and the 45 Long Colt.

Who's crazy??

Same. Proper designation is 45 Colt. Some have "*******ized" the designation to 45 long Colt. This was probably an attempt to make sure it wasn't confused with 45 ACP. Hope this helps.

What Dave said.

I think the .45 Long Colt came about after the .45 ACP. Before that, it was .45 Colt or .45 S&W.

And for the folks that say there is no 45 Long Colt because there never was a 45 Short Colt.

Wasn't the short colt ( and I'm going off memory here) designed by Colt to supply the Army and keep them from buying .45 Schofield cartridges? (the .45 Schofield would also work in the Colt Peacemaker but not the other way around. At that time, there were @ 8,000 Schofields and 12,000 Peacemakers in Army service)

I may have dreamed this.........

Thanks for the link, I'd lost it.

For more fun, a regular Lever rifle/carbine teams up well with a revolver - or the new Ranch Hand. I "suffer" with a cross bolt safety M94 simply nbecause the Lever 45 LC works so well.

And I guess S&W uses "Special" & "Magnum", where Colt preferred "Short" & "Long". I'll take one of each please.

Th .45 Colt may also be properly referred to as the .45 Long Colt.

Gunwriters have referred to the cartridge as the .45 Long Colt.

Reloading manuals have referred to the cartridge as the .45 Long Colt.

The United States government referred to the cartridge as the .45 Long Colt.

Frankford Arsenal referred to it as the .45 Long Colt.

Colt produced boxed ammunition labeled as .45 Long Colt.

And, most importantly, I like to refer to it as the .45 Long Colt...which should make it official...

45 Colt is 45 Colt. I believe the "Long" was inserted by a Hollywood writer a long time ago, and kept cropping up in Westerns (movies and TV) ever since, eventually becoming part of the lexicon. Sure sounds more impressive wit Long in there, doesn't it? On the other hand, perhaps some of them were taking some pills they bought through spam email, and are now longer.

Tomatoes, Tomatoes(tamaatoes). I'm not so bent on the correction as "LONG" as I know what caliber the person is talking about................ JMO

I was hoping I didn't make that up, but with me you never know. For some reason, I also thought it wasn't for sale commercially.

45 Colt is the correct name. There was never a '45 short Colt' round as there were with other calibers which lead to the short/long names.

There were shorter 45 rounds at the time (curiously even a round that was shorter than the original 45 Colt, but was also named 45 Colt), which is where the name 'long colt' came from, but Colt never branded the round anything but 45 Colt. I have heard of boxes straight from Colt labeled '45 Long Colt', but have never seen one nor seen a picture of one with one exception.

Colt made a wax bullet set which they did indeed put '45 long colt' on the box. If you count that, then yes, Colt has designated it '45 Long Colt'. I don't count the wax bullet, and in a regular round, until I see a picture of the mythical box of Colt made '45 Long Colt' rounds, I'll stick with Colt's official stance on the subject, that it's never been anything but '45 Colt'.

But I don't get my undies in a twist over it either. Saying you want a box of 45 long colt won't confuse anyone, so I don't really care.

I have always referred to it as the 45 Long Colt so as not to have any confusion. And the reason there is confusion is because some (many) auto owners refer to their Government Model as a "45 Colt."

Back in the old days of Shotgun News, with no photos and minimal descriptions because they charged by the word, I once called a guy up who had a "45 Colt" for sale. After less than a minute discussing condition, etc., it turned out to be a Government Model in 45 Auto. And the guy acted like I was the dummy

On another forum, a year or two ago, this same topic came up of 45 Colt vs. 45 Long Colt. One guy responded that he used to work at a gun range. He told of a time he saw a shooter having difficulty loading the magazine on his 45 Auto. You guessed it. He was trying to stuff 45 Long Colt's into the mag!

Back to the OP's question...Rossi has two different models of the Ranch Hand listed.

"Model RH92-57203 | 45 LC - NEW

Model RH92-57121 | .45 COLT"

Therefore Rossi must have some difference in the two.

Any ideas on why there would list the two?
