Default MAC's thoughts on the Remington R51

For those of you interested in the R51 and who also indulge in the Military Arms Channel, MAC just posted about the recently received R51. Conclusion: The slide is nearly inoperable, and it is worse that the example from SHOT.

Caveat Emptor.

The R51's claim to fame was supposed to be how easy the slide was to pull?? It appears he got a "bad" one. Most new model guns have problems, wait a year to buy one

The one he has sure looks like a poor example.

I have a friend that got one and said he loved it after putting 50 rounds through it. After another 50 rounds, it was on its way back to Remington.

Owned my R51 for appox. 4 weeks and put around 500 or so rounds through it. Also should note mine was a low serial number gun. At first, the slide was 'sticky, gritty, etc' but I admit it smoothed out, first 100 rds or so the gun did not malfunction and was great. Then it went to hell. Small issues such as grip screws working loose and some fit a finish irks. Then at least one round in every mag I put in it I would get a FTF so shooting it for a ccw was far from reliable (youtube R51 issues and my gun had them all). Called Remington and they said they would probably decide to just replace it with a new one if enough problems were found. Well it started as 2 week repair. Now they said they are working on 'updated internal parts' for it and it could be another 4-6 weeks. Well I decided to fork alittle more $ out and just trade it for a Shield 9. Picked her up yesterday, blew 100 rds through it and i'm in love! (don't tell my wife) So theres my R51 story, I realize its first year production and they are bound to have their woes but that was alittle much imo. I would recommend checking this gun out after a few years.

One guy on YouTube with the R51 had problems with it not returning to battery resulting in failure to fire and eventually the slide locked up solid.

Yep, that was ONE of the issues I had with mine also. Had I seen the inside machine work of this gun I would of never bought the R51 just based on that alone. It was horrible. Now I have a Shield 9 and happy happy happy

Ah well, let's see if Walther get it right with the gas delayed blowback CCP. Mind you, I'll bet the first gripe will be "it gets hot in an extended range sessions". Well, DUH! it's a carry gun, how long is the fight going to last?

I'm really disappointed in the R51; when they were announced I thought it might have to take a position on my "want" list. After reading all of the negative reviews, it looks like Remington hasn't executed it well. I hope they get it straightened out; I'd still like to have one.

Sounds as if Remington really blew it. And if so that's going to be very, very expensive for them, more ways than one.

Aside from awareness, I know little about the R51. It superficially resembles the original Model 51, but that's about as close as it gets. I have two of those (both in .380), and the 51 is my favorite carry pistol. Very flat and compact, highly ergonomic, and never a malfunction. I'm sure it would be economically impossible to revive the original.
