Default Unexpected gift....Winchester.

Wife and I had dinner today with an old neighbor.
He sold his home and will be moving into an assisted living center next week.
As we were leaving he said I want you to have this.
When I asked about his children..(all grown) he advised.."all they want is my money".
I was lost for words.
1960 mgf Winchester 94 in scabbard. Great condition.

Nice gun and neighbor! I had one for years in 30-30. Mine was made in 1969. Sold it a few years ago. Wish now I had kept it. Congrats!

No loss on the '69. You'll be much more pleased by replacing it with a pre '64 or even a '70s vintage pre angle eject. Or even with angle eject if you want to scope it.

I'm both happy that he managed to find an appreciative new owner for his treasured rifle, and yet at the same time I'm saddened that his own children had such disregard for his worldly possessions that they would just want money.

Xfuzz, it says a lot about you that your neighbor thinks well of you to give you his rifle. You're a good man. All my very best, Joe.

Be sure to pay your visits once he moves, would mean more to him than any of us can really understand.

Congratulations on a fine firearm!

Nice gun and nice neighbor.

Before he died my buddy gave me his Ruger Red Eagle, one of the first built and likely in Ruger's garage. I told him this wasn't any ordinary 22 and was worth some serious money. He told me to sell it then and keep the money. Of course I never will and one of my most special guns.

As my wife says older people are the best friends as all they want from you is your friendship.

So sad.
When my parents died, we were all civilized. My prized inheritance items were the stainless steel knives and forks that I grew up with and the "free" glasses from the Shell gas stations in the 60s and early 70s. Others wanted the chna and silverwear. I wanted comfort things. Funny...

Nice about that rifle - keep it forever, right?

Sad story about the nice neighbor. I bet you have spent more time with him than his kids have. That you have even talked to him about his guns and other items that his kids either dont care about or just want to sell for the money.

We need to let this be a lesson to all of us in how we treat our own family.

Thumbs up

Very nice.

Having worked in a nursing home while in college, along with my great-grandparents spending their final years in one, I will echo what has already been suggested: Visit your friend/neighbor as often as you can. It will mean more to that man than you can ever know. (Or until we are in their shoes.)

Sometimes the angels have the last word, -- to speak of his admiration for you, and to underscore your gratitude and humility.

Good on you both. He certainly will enjoy your visiting to say 'hello'.

Regards,

Dyson

It says a lot about the character of the person who gets a man's prize possession over his own children. Karma once again has a way of showing up at the correct time.

My late neighbor left me his .44 Ruger SBH 7 1/2" and a brand new Stainless steel propane grill. His family was chased out of state after he paid for their tickets up from the lower 48 and they wanted him to cash his CD's out before he died so they wouldn't have any issues. He was a great guy and I can't understand how his adult children are such morons.............I promised him I'd cook a big juicy steak and think of him and shoot his pistol in his honor. I'd come home and he'd holler out his window and give me fresh cooked halibut and an ice cold beer. He was one of the greatest generation...........

With the kindness that was shown, you are valued as a true neighbor and not just someone who lives in the area. If I had to guess, I'll bet you've treated this gentleman with the same kindness and good deeds that more than made this deal worth the price of admission. I can only wish we all had neighbors like you. Fantastic job!

Not only should you visit him often but pick him up and take him to your home for a nice home-cooked meal. He will enjoy the company and the food. Assisted living meals get pretty boring and he'll appreciated the change.
