Default Taurus Bashing?

I'm just curious as to why people bash Taurus so much. Now granted I haven't bought anything from them since the late 80's or early 90's but I have an early Model 92 clone of the Beretta plus my wife has the Model 85 .38 Spcl. and we have always found them to be an excellent weapons. I remember at the time I bought the 92 that the Beretta was $200 more, came with a 1 year warranty and plastic grips while the Taurus came with a lifetime warranty and wood grips. It seemed to me from just the warranty alone that Taurus had more confidence in their pistol than did Beretta. Has the Taurus quality gone downhill since then?

Taurus has quality control? Now from what I have seen of their newer guns it doesn't exist, and their policy of shipping the gun back to the factory and then taking months upon months to fix the problem (or not) it probably has something to do with it. You have a better chance of getting Juan Valdez to personally make you a cup of coffee than to find a forum where Taurus isn't being bashed. I know of at least one gun shop that will not take them in on trades. I can tell you that I have seen several people buying brand new Taurus handguns and them having serious issues with them. I also know a gunsmith that has made a pretty good living fixing what the factory won't warranty. One thing about the Taurus guns is that they are not good for lots of rounds, at least what I have seen and heard. I hang out at gun shops alot and I hear alot about Taurus guns, and mostly its bad. It cannot all be rumor.

I have a Taurus PT1911 full stainless, shoots well and no issues so far. Several years ago I bought a Taurus 22 cal -Model 94S I believe--8 shot. Out of the box it had very loose lockup and I didn't like that. Just felt too sloppy. I had not shot it and a friend of mine just had to have it knowing how sloppy it felt. I sold it to him. He's happy and I don't know if he ever shot it. There you go.

I guess I was feeling lucky when I picked up my PT709. A couple thousand rounds later and still no issues I need to go next door and buy a lotto ticket

it's a very good thing that taurus offers the lifetime warranty.....cause if you buy one it's likely you will be using it numerous times.....for life!!

Taurus bashing doesn't bother me, in spite of the fact that I bought 3 new .22 cal Revolvers in 2010, 2 Taurus M94's & a S&W M317.

I've had zero issues with either of the M94's but the M317 had to go back to S&W within the first 50 rd's. The M317 seems fine now, after the following work was done to it.

I've had quite a few Taurus firearms and I've been quite lucky. I admit that I find their revolvers a better quality than their autos, but the two autos I've kept (PT-99 & PT-945) have been exceptional! Like anything else, you get good or bad. If it's good, you never hear it; if bad, the whole world knows! Some guys at my range used to bash them heavily to find out they never even shot one! Their opinions changed when they tried mine. If you have a good one, great! If not, sorry; but it doesn't mean they're all junk! Remember all the flak the Sigma got?

If you go inside a Taurus revolver you will see why Smiths cost more and are better guns. My 2 cents.

I have had a couple of early PT-92s before they put the de-cocker on them and they were both great guns.

No experience with the later guns or revolvers.

Friends don't let Friends buy Taurus revolvers.

I have an older Model 92 and 99 from the early 80s. And I have some of their older rifles, all good guns. I wouldn't touch any of the "newer" revolvers.

I'll never own another Taurus. Never. Bought them brand new and they all broke. I tried. I gave them a chance. Never again.

And I don't know about the 75% thing either. Local gun shop I frequent got 10 judges in. 8 had to go back for significant problems.

There's too much to choose from in guns to trust another Taurus.

Not a total Taurus basher but I would never buy a Millennium Pro again. I have a PT145 and 140 hanging in my safe that are worthless. On both the safety is broke as well as the slide catch spring. On the 140 it has a very like strike and after repeated strikes will not set off a round. Speaking of slide catch springs, I ordered a few 6 years ago. They still haven't arrived. I will say I did have a 99 that was a very reliable firearm.

I used to work with a fella who bought stuff cheap. He always bragged to me that "Taurus has a lifetime warranty but S&W doesn't".

I told him that if he bought an older, quality S&W he would never need a warrranty.

The Taurus M85 .38 Special snub always intriqued me as did the small frame .44 Specials they made. But I have enough S&Ws in a variety of flavors that I do not need to go "Taurus".

I bought a Taurus revolver in 32 H&R Magnum a couple of years back. It would chamber 32s but not magnums. I tried several ammo brands and none of the magnum rounds would fit but the standard 32s worked just fine. I'll never buy another!

In the mid 80's I bought a Pt99-AF and a 85s, both have proved to be very dependable and reliable. A few years ago I bought a PT111-MilPro based on past experience with Taurus, now I know why they have the second strike capability, I just could not bring myself to liking this pistol. I took it to my local pawn/dealer and traded it on a NIB PPK/S with some extra bucks. The pawn dealer loves the cheap guns, says he can turn them over alot quicker. I won't bash Taurus, I just won't buy another one.

IMO, Taurus makes two types of revolvers, one is a good value and will give years of good service. The second type is one that will never be right no matter how many trips to the warranty center it has.
I was lucky and my one Taurus, a 617 2" .357 Magnum turned out to be a good value that I've shot quite a bit. I will take a chance on buying a second Taurus product though.

My Pt-22 (based on the .22 Beretta pocket pistol) has turned out to be a fun gun, but it took literally hundreds of rounds to break it in so it would function smoothly with reasonable reliability. Good thing it's a .22, otherwise that process would've been expensive.

I'd also bought a used .32 S&W Taurus revolver many years ago, and the fit and appearance was excellent, but it wasn't nearly as accurate as I'd hoped it would be. I sold it.

Based on my limited experience with Taurus, I'd rate them as a bit above average.

Several gunshops in the area have stopped selling them as to many complaints and returns to the factory. Plus when you have a warranty problem YOU pay to ship it back.

I think they have some good designs (other than the direct clones or copies)

Perhaps the big problem is that they just make too many styles of guns, if maybe they concentrated on a few less, the quality would improve.

It gives gun snobs something to feel superior about. I own a few and they are as reliable as any S&W I own.

Friends don't let friends buy Taurus guns.

Yeah, they have a life time warranty... good for them. So does S&W... major difference is the lack of quality control from Taurus I've worked a number of years behind the counter of a gun shop and the amount of Taurus made guns that had to be shipped back due to repair issues is huge. These were brand new out of the box guns.

Their guns are rough and lack quality and craftsmanship. Yeah, they make some nice designs... some are great shooters. But buying Taurus is the same as playing black jack or roulette in Vegas. You might win but the majority of the time you're gonna loose.

The only guns that are very nice from them are their PT-22 and PT-25 Beretta Tip Barrel clone that they build in Miami, FL. But for that I'll simply get a used Beretta for the same price with much better quality and resale then the Taurus made guns....

Ask yourself one question... What agency in the USA issues Taurus made firearms?

Agencies all across the USA issue GLOCK, S&W, Beretta, Sig Sauer, Ruger, FN, Colt, etc... I don't see anyone issue a Taurus made gun. Sure... some cops carry them as off duty or back up guns but that's because they're cheap.

There is no such thing as "Taurus bashing," instead, it is really telling the truth. I owned a gun shop in the '70s, carried Taurus for a short time, discontinued them because every one that sold came back within a week or two with major problems, and their warranty service was worthless. Oh, before putting them out for sale, I inspected them all, and returned about 75% at that point - no quality control, poor materials and workmanship. Fast forward to the present - my favorite LGS has carried Taurus for several years, and has stopped doing so, for precisely the same reasons. The more things change, the more they remain the same. I'm not saying you can't get a good Taurus, only that they are few and far between.

I had a .45 Colt snubby that was great. They may work, I just don't see the highest average of it in my limited travels and circles. I feel far better paying a bit more for a much higher chance of being not only satisfied, but very pleased and proud to own and shoot my chosen piece. After having the silky smooth action of a Smith, it is hard to be happy with a gun of lesser quality. Taurus has been around so they must be OK, just not my cup of tea. JMO

Actually there is no reason to bash Taurus guns. If you shoot them enough they do it to themselves.

I can give you my take on the subject without even lowering myself to mentioning that brand name.

I would buy a Hi-Point before I {again} bought one of those, how is that? 26

I've seen some Taurus semi-autos that are OK. My son bought a Taurus 1911 against my advice that has turned out to be a decent gun. But the revolvers are another matter. I've never seen one that I would consider to be acceptable. They remind me of Tasco optics. People I knew would buy Tasco scopes because they were inexpensive and they would always end up failing by fogging up or breaking inside or whatever. Then I'd read about how Tasco has improved. But the next one I'd come across would still be garbage. It has been the same with Taurus revolvers over the years. They are always hyped as being improved in quality over the previous ones. But when I see one, it still has the same old fundamental problems. For those that say they have good ones, congratulations. You have beat the odds. But I'd suggest you wasted your luck the day you bought it. You should have used the luck buying a lottery ticket instead. The payoff would have been better.

I had trouble with every Taurus I've owned. I have had to send everyone of them back for repairs ( about a half dozen both revolvers and semi autos.) I sold all but one which is a 2" 44 special which also broke. I'll never buy another.

I recently purchased the Taurus M380 Revolver. It shoots 380 from clips. My first 380, no problems yet. Its' on caliber I didn't own and the price was right. I've heard Taurus bashing but haven't known anyone with a bad Tuarus...we'll see...

Have owned, not heard about, but really spent money to purchase 2 new Taurus semi autos.(recently too) Both were just junk. Parts fell off, and the innards broke. Gave one away. Here's the weird part the second was a PT22 made of plastic. After it spent a month being repaired I sold it used, at a profit! Strange world. Also own 2 Rossi revolvers. They are both stamped "Made by Taurus." In reference to the poster above that mentioned taking one apart and you would know why S&W's are better. I removed the side plate on one Rossi and my 640"C" from 1990. The fit and finish were very good on both. None of the rough unfinished parts that Internet experts are always referring to. In short I will not bash the Rossi part of Taurus anymore. Both the Rossi's shoot very well, don't shave lead out the sides and with the exception of there being no aftermarket grips to buy, are wonderful revolvers. I did muck up a screw on the Rossi on assembly. Guess I will just have to keep it. I also tried the 20-25 dry firings as fast as I could to see if I could throw it out of time. No issues there either. I guess that's another Internet Expert myth as well.

My wife likes her early '80s model 85, and after recently replacing the hammer spring it actually shoots again! They were pretty good guns back then. I had a 605 for a couple years.....never shot it much. Just didn't really like it......

I have a PT92AF.....never had a problem except when it discharged while racking the slide.........*day I bought it*. Previous owner had put grease or something in the firing pin tube. Causing the pin to not retract :/. After fixing that......I've never had an issue.

I have never bought a Taurus but the prices sometimes are enticing. Maybe one day.

I bought a 90's production 357mag with 6" barrel from a friend and it was solid. That lead me to buy a full size 44mag a few years ago in 4". It was quite accurate and a real pleasure with the porting. I just figured the price of it new wasn't far off a used S&W (at least a few years ago) and no internal lock as well so both were traded.

Probably wont buy another one unless its from the 90's but then again I won't buy a new smith with an internal lock on principal.

I would rather by a S&W with lock and replace it than buy a gun made by Taurus. Chances are that even with the lock the Smith will far outlast any Taurus product.

Difference is when your smith is worn out and needs to be replaced. It will cost you money. A lot.

The Taurus. It wears out.....EVER....they'll give you a replacement. FOREVER.
