Default Winchester 71 .348 deluxe

Attended our local gun show last weekend and saw an old trader who had a very nice Winchester 71 .348 for sale. The gun was at least 95% overall and had its original sling with it. Also, a box of Western ammo to go along with it. He's asking $3,500 for it as is. Post war with a short tang and sights, but no bolt peep. Really as nice a 71 as I've seen in awhile. Is this rifle worth the asking price or is the guy out of line on this one???

The asking price for Winchester lever actions is a continuing source of amazement. In general, there are many unreasonable prices being quoted on the internet and in gun shops. The desirability of the Mod 71 seems to have been increasing rather fast, perhaps because of its relationship to its precursor, the Model 1886. Also, a number of shooters have used it for conversion of the .348 to a large-bore wildcat. Opinion only, as I have little idea of what it is really worth, but I doubt that the $3500 figure would be realized in an auction.

I think it is too high, especially for a postwar. I have not looked at pricing of these in the last couple of years, but I gotta believe that is $1K high, maybe more.

agree with the 1000 to high earlier stated. maybe a carbine would bring that much in the listed condition, but can't imagine a postwar deluxe that high. however, never say never as the old saying goes.

That's about $1200+ too high for the current market- and it'll be quite some time before the economy and value catch up with it. I've been accused of being very conservative on buying/valuing though.

I really like 71's and 95's- my favorite guns.
