Fallkniven A1 Army Survival Knife Review - YouTube

Review of the Fallkniven A-1 survival knife.

I like Fallkniven products very much. Some have Thermorun handles like this, others have leather or curly birch.

Sheath options on most models include leather in traditional Nordic style, but with a more squared tip, and Zytel, especially for parachutists or those with a lot of wet weather.

These perform better than many true custom knives, but are avaialble for immediate delivery. They are handsome, and fit the hand well, and are heck for stout. The company has them tested at the University of Lulea for breakage stress, and they have passed gruelling trials by both the US and Swedish military. Certain models are available with NSN stock numbers for purchase by either individuals or US military units, mainly for aircrew survival use. The S-1 is the one I'd choose for that. The A-1 also passed trials, but is too large for the sheath on US survival vests. I understand that the A-1 is popular among Norwegian Marines, and that the longer A-2 has been used by NATO forces to probe for mines in Afghanistan.

If you haven't seen Fallkniven (FELL-ky-neeven) knives before, I'll add a couple of other videos. Their site is: www.fallkniven.com

If you can't wait on a Randall or other custom knife, I think they're the way to go. They aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for, usually. I thnk Fallkniven are the Zeiss or Leica of the production knife world. They're worth seeking out, and they do have US dealers. Prices on the site are in Swedish kroner. US retail prices are usually less, at discounted dealers. You should be able to find an A-1 for $200, more or less; $250 tops, I'd think. The NL-2 line with leather handles, and the newest line with curly birch handles and an advanced steel type are higher.

I'll try to fnd and post other videos showing some of my favorite models. If in doubt and you want a hunting and general outdoors knife, I'd suggest the F-1 or the S-1. The latter looks much like a smaller A-1. If I was looking for a combat knife, I'd take the A-1, perhaps in the optional all black version.

I gave my son an S-1 to take to Iraq a few years ago, but he thought it was too nice and took a Ka-Bar knife instead. But he can use the S-1 for general outdoors use now, and likes it.

Anyway, enjoy the videos and consider Fallkniven products if you like superb knives. Note the contours in the A-1's handle. It feels very good and secure in the hand

The S-1 is compared to the F-1 and the A-1. As the video advances, you get closeups of all three.

Fallkniven S1 Forest Fixed Blade Knife - YouTube

A good overview of the S-1 Forest knife. However, the blade finish on mine is a little better than on his. Some of the problem may be the lighting, or his knife may have missed the final polishing step in manufacture. Odd. Other knives that I've seen and owned all looked to have more even polishing, to a better degree. The finish is brighter and as even as on, say, Buck's traditional line of knives. Similar to Puma knives, which I also like.

The man who designs these knives is a hunter and angler, and a very shrewd designer, who is also Sweden's largest (I think) retailer of other knife brands. He's seen most knives and learned a lot about design, and he tries his knives, personally. Most presidents of knife companies don't do that. I suspect that most are just corporate executives. This guy hunts moose and fishes!

Okay, so much for the free commercial. I just want more Americans to be aware of these fine knives. Most seem not to know about them, although there have been reviews in the cutlery magazines.
