STI now offers Spartan's in 4" and 3.5" configurations. I'm pretty sure thay are using Armscor (RIA) frames, slides, etc. for those models too. Still a pretty good price point.

Well, of course it's time for a 1911!
There have been many opinions, given up to this point.
First and foremost, there is the Colt 1911. Colt knows what they are doing when it comes to the 1911, no doubt.
I get the impression you are looking for an introductory model; in which case, i'd recommend the Remington R1.
No extras, but a sound, dependable firearm nevertheless. For its pricepoint, i'd argue it is one of the better deals out there...fit and finish is nice.
Ruger makes great firearms. Stainless is nice. But if it were my first, and I was budget conscious, i'd recommend the Remington.
Hope this has been of interest and helps--

Yep, the R1 is nice and made for a fun little project gun. It's one of the 1911's that my friends like to shoot.
The Springfield mil-spec would be another good entry choice. Along with Colt, the Springfield mil-spec makes a great base gun for custom work.
from a few small mods...
to a bit more work...

Sweet.
Agreed, and I'd go one further and include the wartime contract 1911s like Remington-Rand, Ithaca, etc.

CCC
Way too many mint looking 1911 style pistols in this thread. I better post a picture of my beater Combat Commander and some of it's favorite fodder.

C&L, I have to agree with you. I like yours a lot. Handling my few near mint or mint guns doesn't give me the satisfaction I get from carrying and maintaining my well used carry guns.
Still, I have some of both.....

Same here...the shiny ones are good and the experienced ones are good.

Just like Smith is the best as far as quality and resale of wheelguns Colt is the only 1911 that you can buy at a fair price and sell at the same price if you decide it is not for you.

I sometimes regret I bought my Series 70 and didn't hold out for a pre Series 70 Govt. Model from the 1930s-early 1960s era. Maybe someday I'll get a few. Like old S&Ws, they are class weapons. The Series 70 was the last major production Mod O that had the deeply polished blue finish as standard, although it is not the same finish as the pre war Govt. Models had. Since then only custom shop and commemorative Colts come with that good a finish. Brent, who runs the Colt Custom Shop recently informed us that Colt calls the Series 70 finish National Match Blue, which tickled me.
As far as 1911 and variants go, I only buy Colts.

Growing up, Colt was the only game in town with the exception of those made by others under war contracts, so Colts have the inside track for me with five in the stable, ranging from a 1911 to a 1991. Love the Colts.
